MonmouthMan, I am so envious - a washer and dryer AND backyard. Lucky dog!!!

But, in answer to the original post, yes it's realistic. I have a 1.5 BR for $1200 in Harsimus Cove. I thought I had it good till I read MonmouthMan's post!!!! :-/

maybe it's a typo and they meant $30? which is about right for a credit check. don't know what a "security check" entails.

I know of several ground floor (street level) units on Grand that were flooded but have been/are being renovated - you might consider if not afraid of a "flood zone". Feel free to contact me off the forum (username at gmail).

That is strange I'd like to know what the money is used for and whay it cannot be returned if you can't get the apartment.

Try hotpads.com every now and then, they have a 1 bedroom for 1200 and another for 1395 right now.

thanks y'all! my fear was that demand would be higher after Sandy since lots of people who had to evacuate their basement level apartments would then move elsewhere in JC. hopefully she has good luck!

You can find a ton of places up in the Heights for under a grand, and some really nice ones with multi rooms and ammenities from 1k - $1500 and thats just in the Jersey alone.

This is the best time of year to find the cheapest deals -- but today the cheapest I saw was $1600 for a 2 bedroom -- and $950 for a room to rent -- whatever that means... (click link below to view)

Agreed. It's realistic, and Craiglist is a good bet. My gf and I pay roughly that for a 1.5-bedroom (tiny office) near Van Vorst. But you might find something with Armagno or one of the other realtors, also...

I also rent a 2br in HP area for $1400. Craigslist is the way to go.

Yes, Craigslist. Hell, I have a huge 2 bedroom with 2 living rooms, washer/dryer in the bathroom and a nice backyard for 1500. I'm 2 blocks from Hamilton Park.

Hi all,

I'm asking for a friend. She can compromise on space and the quality of the building, but can't really go over $1,400/mo, not including utilities. Is it realistic to find a modest downtown studio for $1,400?

Also, if anyone has any tips on where to look - we'd appreciate it. So far, it's just been hotpads, trulia, craigslist, etc. Thanks!
