Bill Credit Questions Following Sandy

How can you get credit where credit is due? The answer is different depending on your provider: Just because you were without service after Sandy doesn't mean you will automatically get credit, even if it was for more than a week. News 4 consumer reporter Lynda Baquero shows you how to make sure your bill is correct.

Information on Credit for Loss of Service due to Hurricane Sandy

11-07-2012 12:52 PM - edited 11-07-2012 12:55 PM

Hi All-

Verizon is offering credit to all those who lost services due to Hurricane Sandy as well as waiving fees associated with equipment replacements. In order to get credited, you must report an issue. If you haven't done so yet, you can do so by going to Verizon.com/repair and following the proper steps there.

In addition, Verizon Wireless will be crediting customers for voice and text overages for customers in New York and New Jersey counties affected by Hurricane Sandy. For additional information regarding wireless credits, please see http://t.co/yexyu10T

I hope that helps!
-Heather

Verizon Wireless waiving charges during Hurricane Sandy and beyond

Verizon Wireless will be giving customers in areas hit by superstorm Sandy, including Bergen and Passaic counties, free phone and texting service for the period starting Oct. 29 and ending Nov. 16.

Domestic voice and text usage will be automatically removed from accounts for those activities, so customers will not be billed additional usage charges for that period, the Basking Ridge-based company said on Monday.

The waiver of charges is in effect for Verizon Wireless users in 21 counties in New Jersey and 10 New York counties. Cellphone Internet service is not included.

"We put customers first, and we recognize how important it is to do something proactively for our customers when they need it most," Andrea Kimmet, spokeswoman for Verizon Wireless's Northeast region, said Tuesday.

Verizon Wireless joins a number of cable and phone providers who are making accommodations and offering price breaks to customers impacted by Sandy. AT&T Inc. is extending its late-payment window for wireless and wireline customers who are behind. It will waive late fees and will not disconnect services because of non-payment.

Cablevision, Comcast and Time Warner Cable are offering various rebates to customers who lost service due to the storm and its power outages.

"We want to do everything we can to make things even a little easier as they go through this difficult time," Comcast spokesman Jeff Alexander said in an email.

"We will handle each customer on an individual basis so we can be sensitive to their specific needs and circumstances," he said. Alexander said customers can call 1-800-COMCAST or visit a local service center for assistance with damaged equipment, credits and other storm-related concerns. Customers who contact the company and identify the time period during which they did not have access to Comcast services will receive a credit.

Even though phone and texting service is free until mid-November, Verizon Wireless advised customers who are auto-enrolled for text-message alerts, which notify customers when their allowance usage is at threshold levels, that they will still get those warning notices. Customers have the option to opt out of receiving these messages by going to Verizon Wireless My Account online.

As of Monday, Verizon Wireless was operating more than a dozen generator-powered mobile recharging stations in hard-hit areas of New York and New Jersey. Overnight the company staged new recharging vehicles in Staten Island and Toms River.

In addition to recharging wireless devices, many of these Wireless Emergency Communication Centers offer additional services, including free Wi-Fi Internet access, free calling from phones on the vehicles, and in some instances, tablet and computer workstations.
