In other areas of the country, the pedestrian signals operate on every cycle, and the button, if it does anything, gives the pedestrians a walk signal sooner.

In NJ, it is common for the pedestrian signals to only work if someone has pushed the button.

For those talking about respecting the walk/don't walk signs. Half the time it doesn't even work. That is a problem across NJ really. The walk will never light up on some corners or it does and immediately flips to don't walk.

That is really why people ignore them because they are so inconsistent.

An incorrect analysis. There would be fewer cars.

I am all for Public Transport and that kinda stuff. But I believe this was done to facilitate the commute of the people who live in the suburbs and work in JC. I doubt, those people coming in expensive cars would take public transportation.

That's exactly the point. Saving a guy commuting 5-10 minutes at the expense of all the people who live here is not a great trade off.

1. The current Jersey City administration has a car fetish and everything they have done has been retrograde, pro-car culture. Expanding Columbus and Grand street has only been to the benefit of cars; adjusting the light signal at Grove Street and Columbus even though this is one of the busiest pedestrian crossings downtown. The refusal to address pedestrian safety on Marin, or neglecting to repaint crosswalks on Erie and Jersey when they repaved are all examples of this. So I somehow doubt the city is going to correct the imbalance in pedestrian signals on Washington.

2. Hitting a pedestrian carries much greater penalties than does jaywalking. I suggest drivers slow down before they face manslaughter charges.

If pedestrians simply obeyed the Walk/Don't Walk signals everything would be fine.

The traffic light right at the crossing of Washington Blvd in front of the Newport PATH station needs to be adjusted. Most of the time that it is green for drivers on Washington Blvd, there is no automobile traffic, and as a result most pedestrians do not respect the signals.

The cycle should be adjusted such that the walk signal for pedestrians crossing Washington Blvd is twice as long, and the green for automobile traffic is half as long.
