I was pleased with their constant follow-up phone calls but they only do in-home estimates during the week and can't come to Jersey City before next Monday. Doesn't work so well when you're trying to competitively shop. Helen gave me hourly rate for moving but when I asked about packing she had no clue and finally spit out $1,300 - to pack a ONE bedroom apartment. No thanks.

Moishes recently relocated my mothers belongings to Florida. It involved three different stops along the eastern seaboard.

Everything arrived on time without a scratch. We dealt with
Ronnie 551-226-0602 he was great.

I moved in Jersey City last month. I used Tommy's Movers out of Hoboken. The guys were friendly and some of the hardest workers I've ever seen. The price was reasonable were done right on with their estimate. Moving sucks but these guys made it a much easier process.

Another warning for StarCity movers. We moved from Jersey City a few months ago into a new house.

StarCity would not give us the name of the guys who were doing the move. They came in an unmarked vehicle and did not have starcity shirts on. Was kind of scary. The guys themselves would not give us their names. Not sure if they were legal.

The guys arrived an hour later than the time window they gave. I think they don't schedule things properly. Then they took 3 hours to arrive at our new home after packing up the items (a drive that should have taken 1 hour max in traffic). I think they must have stopped for dinner or something but we did not appreciate that as they had all of our possessions in their truck.

Additionally, They damaged walls in the new house and broke railings on the staircase. They didn't offer to do anything about it until threatened. They did not have any booties or anything to protect new carpet and walked all over everything. All of our items arrived safe and sound. They did slash a hole in our mattress pad though (just the covering over the mattress glad we left it on to protect the mattress).

We did not want to give them a tip but in the end we did because they looked like the type that might start trouble if we didn't.

Stay away!

I wanted to warn people about Star City Moving....

We only moved four blocks but were not able to align our closings. So they packed up our stuff, stored it, and delivered it five days later.

- Our 52 inch Sony Bravia tv mysteriously "disappeared" during the move.

- Other small items magically disappeared (e.g., box of toilet paper and paper towels, mirror), nothing of significant value (beyond the tv), but still annoying.

- A bookcase was crushed. It no longer looked like a bookcase. Granted it was particle board, but....

-They broke a wheel off our office chair during delivery. I found it by the moving truck's tire.

-It looked like our boxes had traveled around the world. I am shocked that more things weren't broken beyond one wine glass and a glass pitcher.

-They arrived two hours early to pick up our belongings and six hours late to deliver them. And lied repeatedly about how close they were to being to our condo on the move in day. They finished moving stuff in well after midnight. Needless to say, the movers were exhausted and not at their best.

It took about 2 weeks for them to supposedly review the security tapes and send us a check. We did indicate that we would file a police report which got them moving. They would only give us $700 for the tv, which is actually more than the contract called for (at 60 cents per pound, today's lightweight tvs are not adequately insured through these generic coverage terms). We kept our renter's insurance for the move, so they made up the difference between the mover and the $2250 estimated replacement cost.

So, if you are moving, my advice is to avoid Star City Moving and to double check that your renter's insurance covers items during a move.

I think she went out of business - perhaps she moved back to NZ.

I had always used her but used Catlaw recently and was very pleased.

Great thread! I'm looking for a company to move my apt. from DTJC up to McGinley area, and my boyfriend's place in Astoria to the same McGinely area apt.

If anyone has any new experiences to add, I'd appreciate it. Also, I've never used a moving company before. What are the general guidelines/expectations in terms of tipping the movers?

Thanks!

Thank you very much!

Their website clearly mentions that they are insured.

I called them but they are not available until the 29th. Requested them to give an estimate so that I can decide.

THANKS AGAIN FOR THE QUICK RESPONSE! Much appreciated. :)

Mods - I created a new thread because my query was on movers with certificate of insurance, not just all movers. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Hi,

We are moving from a one-bed in Newport to an apartment in "The A Building" this weekend. Less than 0.5 mile commute.

The building management wants the movers to have a COI.

Any recommendations on the movers?

Thanks!

Hoboken moving companies impersonated by movers on Google: cops

Published: Tuesday, October 25, 2011, 1:19 PM Updated: Tuesday, October 25, 2011, 1:38 PM
By Summer Dawn Hortillosa / The Jersey Journal

Two Hoboken moving company owners reported yesterday that a company is advertising using their names but using their own phone number to directly receive the calls, police said.

The owner of Tommy's Moving said he found out after speaking to a customer who complained about her service and realizing that he had never spoken to her before, reports said. She told him she called his company's "other" number - a phone number he didn't recognize, reports said.

He searched for "Hoboken moving company" on Google and found a company that had been using his company's name since at least May, reports said. He called the number listed on the site and arranged for the movers to come to his Willow Avenue home, where he took pictures of the company's truck, which bore a Brooklyn address, reports said. The movers sped away in their truck when the Hobokenite tried confronting them, reports said.

The Willow Avenue resident also called the owner of L & L Movers after seeing that the company was also using the name of the Wharton man's company, reports said.

The L & L Movers owner investigated and found a company called Diamond Van Lines had been using his name, reports said. When he called a number listed for the company, he confronted a man who answered, reports said. The man on the phone accused the business owner of ""stepping" on him and hung up, reports said.

Both men have spoken with an investigator for Consumer Services and plan to pursue the matter criminally, police said.

I've also had good luck with the movers on the UHaul site. There's a link called "Moving Helpers" that has a list of movers who will help you load/unload once you've rented a truck. Just choose your location and fill in the date/time you're moving and it will show you who's available and at what price.

I like it a bit better than the 3 guys with a truck deal (most of the movers are about the same price) only because UHaul does seem to provide some oversight/effort to reduce the chances of your stuff being taken hostage. And who shows up first in the list of available movers is determined by their ranking in customer reviews, so they have an incentive to impress you.

I've helped four other people move over the last few weeks, and while that may mean I'm owed moving help it also means I'm totally sick of lugging boxes and really want to pay someone else to do it for me. Definitely good to know that the 3 men and a truck flyer guys won't eat my furniture though. They may be my cheapest option since I'm going to pack everything myself in advance. Do you know if they charge extra for stairs? I'm moving from a big elevator building to a second floor unit in a former vestry.

I have used the 3 men and a truck on the flyers a few years ago. They work out a bit cheaper than the pro moving firms, but the $18/$20 per person per hour adds up very fast if you count packing, 3 hour minimum, etc.

Otherwise ask Moishe's for a quote. They're based in JC and will likely give you one of the best pro quotes. Oh and doing your own packing, using a storage pod/container, waiving insurance, etc can all reduce moving costs considerably.

I have exactly the same question. I'm moving within downtown JC, and only have a couple large pieces of furniture. Never hired movers before though so I don't really know what to expect price-wise.

Also, does anyone know any man-with-a-van types they'd recommend who could pick up a large Ikea shelving unit from a midtown office building for me?

I'd check with the long-haul specialists first.

United
North American
Allied
Mayflower
Bekins (good experience on a South Carolina move).

Also give Morrisey's a call. Local guys who provided an effortless move. They do long distance as well.

Hey everyone,

It seems like it's time for me to leave this fair city and move to the midwest. I'm trying to find a moving company to take care of this task for me. Can anyone recommend a reputable long distance moving company who won't take my stuff hostage? On the same token, can anyone advise AGAINST any companies who are prone to that sort of thing? Thanks!

I used Noah's Ark twice between 2008 and 2009 and had an excellent experience.

In early 2008 I used Moishe's, and it was abominable. They damaged several antiques. The foreman was fresh from the Israeli army and super-belligerent, screaming at me more than once. His crew apologized to me in private. So my bad Moishe's experience could be due to one rotten apple. But those guys hired him, and he was clearly nuts.
