Containers are covered above. for plants, here's a rule of thumb, start big seeds like squash, cukes, beans and peas yourself, it's easy and they grow fast immediately this time of year. Tiny seed plants like herbs, tomatoes & peppers are worth buying starts if you didn't start your own inside early in the spring. Annuals and what starts I do buy, I get at the place at JFK & Lincoln.

Any recommendations for a store that sells planter pots and plants at a reasonable price? We're starting a container garden, and don't want to end up in the poor house. We're willing to travel out in Jersey. Thanks in advance.

You learn to hate birds who steal your grapes, and curse plants that can't pollinate properly on their own. I have an apricot tree on a property we bought in 2004, this is the 1st year it's actually successfully pollinated and set fruit. Every other years frosts and such intervened. I kinda expect failure to find us even yet, though the peaches there only fully failed 2 years ago with the really wet spring. I have kiwis that are male and female plants that have to flower at the same time, guess how that goes. Our units must be pretty undermarket, we had very few vacancies the past few years. But I just rented a unit in 1 day for 18% more than similar unit rented 2 years ago.

I noticed the other day that the Pathmark on Bright by Monmouth had potting soil on sale, 8 lbs. < $2.
You might try Downtown hardware on Newark for planters. Not a great selection, but probably cheaper and haggle-able ...

It's a "geek quest" of mine. Curious how possible it is to become food self sufficient in an urban setting. Of course, everything hinges on having affordable energy. The electricity for the lights ain't free.
I don't know how of the 'plan' will become reality. I took a huge financial hit from 2009 through early 2011. Thankfully, the rent market is strong now, so hopefully my cash situation will be in good shape by this fall. I am going to need to build something to keep all the plants alive until next spring.

I don't have a source of water on my roof yet (it is in the plans). I also didn't go with the drip system because all these plants will be moved indoors come fall (I am going to build an indoor light garden in my loft space). Not too comfortable with something that if it leaks while I am gone, could cause major damage to the interior of the home.
Therefore, the self-watering for me was the best choice for my particular situation.. The biggest problem I have had is not enough light indoors. I have been solving this with full spectrum T-5 and CFL bulbs. I found a great supply place for indoor gardening in Secaucus: http://www.gardenindoorsllc.com/shop/index.php?q=node/11 The guy there is very helpful and they back up their products if there is a problem (they replaced a fixture with a bad ballast without any hassle).

although they might not be big enough for you, I've been pretty happy with the widely available half whisky barrels, usually $25-30.
MDM, is the self watering really better than an automatic watering system? The drip emitters and microsprayers are pretty cheap and one you have it set up, very low maintenance. I have this on all my beds and containers, and I can use any old pot I want of any size or material, small for herbs, big for veggies. http://www.dripirrigation.com/ Lowe's and 14th St Market have been known to stock some of the emitter stuff too, but I don't know about the filters & pressure regulators.

Good luck! I found planters in general to be ungodly expensive, no matter where you get them from. Some people were even making their own by building molds and making them out of high flyash content concrete (much lighter and more water resistant then regular concrete).
For the moment, I built a bunch of self-watering planters based in part on what this guy did: http://www.seattleoil.com/Flyers/Earthbox.pdf I figure I will just build my own decorative planter boxes to hide the self-watering one, later when I have more $$$. In the meantime, the ones made out of storage containers work really well and didn't cost much to make.

What about Home Depot, Lowes on 440, or that garden center on 14th St. by the tunnel. Even K-Mart on 440 might be worth a try.

Can anyone recommend the best place around JC to get large planters (wood, concrete, fiberglass) for a patio, at a reasonable price? I am looking for one to hold a small ornamental tree, as well as several smaller ones.
