Jersey City man sentenced to 40 years in prison for murdering man he considered his rival for girlfriend's love

May 04, 2012, 3:00 AM
By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal

A Jersey City man was sentenced to 40 years in prison yesterday for the 2009 murder of a man he believed had become involved with his girlfriend, officials said.

?I?m happy the family of the deceased can now put this behind them, and I would really like to thank them for their cooperation over the past three years,? Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor John Mulkeen said after the sentencing of Darryl ?D? Denmark, 23, of Orient Avenue.

Last Nov. 17, it took a jury less than three hours to convict Denmark in the murder of Ormont Logan, 26, also of Jersey City, on Clendenny Avenue on April 1, 2009. Denmark was also convicted of two weapons offenses.

On the day of the murder Denmark and his girlfriend argued about her relationship with Logan and she threw Denmark out, officials said.

Later, there was a verbal confrontation between Logan and Denmark on the street near West Side Avenue, and Logan had begun to walk away when Denmark opened fire, striking him three times, including once in the chest.

A man who grew up with the murderer witnessed the killing but refused to cooperate until after Logan?s mother sat down with him at homicide headquarters hours after the killing and convinced him to talk to authorities. He identified Denmark and described the car he fled in as belonging to Denmark?s girlfriend, prosecutors said.

Yesterday, Hudson County Superior Court Judge Mary Costello sentenced Denmark to 40 years for murder and 10 years for the weapons offenses, to run concurrently, Mulkeen said.
Denmark has prior convictions for aggravated assault and two counts of drug possession, Mulkeen said.

?We had asked for life, but the family was happy with the idea that the defendant will not become eligible for parole until about 2043,? Mulkeen said.

Suspect's sleepless nights
Surrenders in West Side murder

Thursday, April 09, 2009

JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

The manhunt for a Jersey City resident charged with murdering a man on a city street last week is over.

Darryl "D" Denmark, 21, walked into the West District Police Station and turned himself in yesterday morning at 3:30 a.m., saying he couldn't sleep, said Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio.

Investigators had traveled as far as Maryland to track down Denmark, who is charged with shooting Ormont Logan, 26, of Bayville Avenue, multiple times on Clendenny Avenue at West Side Avenue shortly before midnight on April 1 after the pair argued over a woman, DeFazio said.

Logan's death was the fifth shooting in Jersey City since March 26, when three teenagers were wounded by gunfire in Triangle Park.

The pressure on Denmark to turn himself in may have been heightened by Friday's Jersey Journal, which splashed his mugshot across the front page.

"We think, based on the results of the autopsy, that the victim turned to walk away and was shot once when he had his back to the defendant and twice more when he turned around, wounded, to confront his attacker," said DeFazio, adding that other evidence corroborates that scenario.

Emergency responders rushed Logan to the Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 12:45 a.m. the next day.

Denmark, whose last known address was on Orient Avenue, was identified by witnesses who said he fled the murder scene with a semiautomatic pistol, DeFazio said.

Denmark made his first appearance on the murder charge in Central Judicial Processing yesterday afternoon. He was represented by Public Defender Don Gardner.

Wearing gray sweatpants, a gray sweatshirt and white sneakers without laces, a handcuffed Denmark stood emotionless before Judge Richard Nieto.

Nieto told Denmark his bail had already been set by Superior Court Judge Kevin Callahan at $1 million cash only. When Nieto asked if he had any questions, Denmark responded, "No sir."

DeFazio said the search for Denmark led investigators as far as a Maryland school attended by one of his family members but that homicide detectives and local authorities there came up empty. Detectives also went to the Essex County home of Denmark's father, DeFazio said.

After turning himself in yesterday morning, Denmark asked for a lawyer and didn't volunteer further information, DeFazio said.

No wonder it was committed over a woman, this schmuck probably never gets laid with an ugly mug like that. Ugh, ugly people shouldn't breed.

Darryl Denmark is sought in the shooting death of Ormont Logan of Jersey City just before midnight last night.

Cops: Killer on the loose after Jersey City shooting

by The Jersey Journal
Thursday April 02, 2009, 5:58 PM

Police have released a photo of the 21-year-old Jersey City man sought in a cold-blooded shooting death last night believed to have been committed over a woman.

Anyone with information about Darryl "D" Denmark of Orient Avenue in Jersey City is asked to call the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office at (201) 915-1345.

It is believed Denmark repeatedly shot Logan with a semi-automatic pistol on Clendenny Avenue, near West Side Avenue, after the two got into an argument just before midnight, officials said.

Police did not recover the weapon, and Denmark is considered armed and dangerous.

Shooting victim dies; Police search for 'armed and dangerous' murder suspect

by Tom Shortell/The Jersey Journal
Thursday April 02, 2009, 11:35 AM

Police collect evidence markers at a murder scene on Clendenny Avenue early this morning.

Police are searching for the man they say shot a Jersey City resident to death shortly before midnight last night, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office.

Police are looking for Darryl "D" Denmark, 21, of Orient Avenue in Jersey City in connection to the murder of 26-year-old Ormont Logan, said Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio. It is believed Denmark repeatedly shot Logan with a semi-automatic pistol on Clendenny Avenue, near West Side Avenue, after the two got into an argument over a woman they both knew, he said.

Police did not recover the weapon, and Denmark is considered armed and dangerous, DeFazio said.

Logan was rushed to the Jersey City Medical Center, and died about one hour later.

The shooting marked the fifth time in a week bullets have flown in Jersey City. Authorities have tied three of the shootings, located in the Greenville section, to gang turf wars. This shooting, located on the West Side, is not related to the others, DeFazio said.

"It appears to be strictly personal," DeFazio said.

Anyone with any information to this case is asked to contact the Prosecutor's Office at (201) 915-1345.

Another shooting in Jersey City

Jersey Journal
Wednesday, April 01, 2009

Cops clean up bullets at the scene of a shooting early this morning on Clendenny Avenue off West Side Avenue in Jersey City.

There was another shooting in Jersey City.

This time, bullets flew on Clendenny Avenue, off West Side Avenue, early this morning, coming just days after a spate of shootings has left Greenville residents unnerved.

Residents duck and cover whenever gunfire erupts

Jersey Journal
Wednesday, April 01, 2009

Residents are tired of the crack of gunfire in the Greenville section of Jersey City, where six people have been shot since Thursday, many in broad daylight.

"Lately it's been crazy," said Vijay Dandue, 50, owner of the Healthcare Pharmacy at Ocean and Winfield avenues, across the street from where a 19-year-old man was gunned down on the sidewalk Monday afternoon.

"It's all drug violence. I seldom go out. My wife used to walk to the post office, but I told her don't go," said Dandue.

Liu Li, of the Sky Dragon Chinese restaurant on Ocean Avenue, is also afraid. The restaurant has several bullet holes in its facade from Monday's shooting rampage.

"It was just a moment and a lot of shooting," Li said. "He (the shooter) shot him right in front of the windows, and I ducked behind the counter.

"I didn't even have time to shut the windows," she added, referring to the thick bulletproof glass panes above her counter.

Caridad Oarrasco, owner of a nearby beauty parlor, is convinced she's lost business the past two years because of crime and violence.

"It's not safe," said Oarrasco, who locked her front door after hearing gunfire and seeing people running on Monday. The last time there was a shooting, she said, crowds of people rushed into her store for cover.

Wayne Bennett was taking in the sunshine yesterday at Triangle Park at Cator Avenue, where three young people were shot in a hail of bullets on Thursday.

"The kids are getting out of hand and every time they get out of school there's a problem," Bennett said. "I think some of it is gangs, but mostly it's just kids being crazy. It's getting out of hand lately."

Joyce Crews was also in Triangle Park yesterday afternoon, where she chatted with friends not far from where a police vehicle was posted.

"I'm out here because it's a nice day, and the police are out here," said Crews, who moved to Jersey City from Richmond, Va., six years ago. "I thought I was going to a better place, but it's the same."

Greenville residents confront police chief on shootings

by Amy Sara Clark / The Jersey Journal
Wednesday April 01, 2009, 11:46 PM

Frances O. Thompson, a school board member and candidate for City Council asks whether the area could get more video cameras at tonight's meeting as Ward A residents (and other candidates) listen on April 1, 2009 at Create Charter School in Jersey City.

Ward A residents -- and several candidates who want to represent them on the City Council -- met with Police Chief Tom Comey and South District brass tonight to discuss the rash of shootings in the Greenville section of Jersey City that has wounded six people.

Comey told the crowd of about 50 who came to the cafeteria of Create Charter School tonight that one of the biggest obstacles to arresting suspects in the shootings is lack of cooperation from the victims.
