Agreed. Journal Square Pub is close, cheap, and safe. If you don't mind walking three blocks to Academy Street and Bergen Avenue across the street from the 270 year old Apple Tree House, you will find a pretty good dive bar, Jack Miller's Pub (293 Academy St). The bar has a bit of a cult following, and I've never felt so welcome in any other bar in the city. Butch Miller (late Jack Miller's son) will never forget your name. "Old timey" Jersey City folks and a friendly crowd.

Your best option is right next door at the Journal Square Pub. It's a dive, but it's cheap and safe and unbeatably close.
You'll find me there this weekend before and after Ferris Buller's Day Off, and maybe Psycho too.

Some friends are coming in from out of town to see Psycho at the landmark Loews Jersey City (which you should check out since that place is amazing). I was hoping to find a decent place withing walking distance to grab a drink with them after the movie. They would rather not deal with driving over to downtown and trying to find parking.
Any recommendations? Anything from a (safe) dive bar to a martini bar is fine. Ideally something low key where you can have a conversation.
