There really isn't a "general" rule. Best place to start is to check your association's by-laws. Claiming ignorance isn't a good way to go. I once had a neighbor who tried that excuse with all sorts of illegal construction for which he didn't obtain a permit (or use a licensed contractor). Long story short: it's hard to hide construction. He was caught and on the hook for all sorts of damage caused to neighboring units. He was also fined by the association and buildings dept. Also a good way to make enemies of your neighbors.

If I ask the condo board, I can't claim ignorance if I do it lol.
Generally speaking, what is the general rule for most condos.

You should direct these questions to your managing agent or condo board. All condos are different as to what is or is not permitted.

Condo ownership and unit renovation questions

Hi All,
I wanted to ask the condo owners out there a few questions about ownership and renovations within your unit: 1) If you live in a 2 br/2ba (one being a master bedroom) and they are in the opposite sides of the unit, can you add a door to the second bedroom to turn it into 2nd master bedroom if the door does not interfere with the structural integrity of the unit and building? 2) Do you have to fill in any paperwork with the association if you want to rent half the unit? 3) Are common amenities also available to the individuals living with you in the unit - ie. gym, courtyard, etc.
