These special needs seniors are currently located at the Liberty Humane Society in Jersey City. They are hoping to have a loving home or even foster home for the holidays. Besides being wise in their years, they are great canines with lots of love left to give. Poor Conan has already been there for quite some time & is starting to become rather depressed. Conan also has incontinece issues, which have been a hurdle in him getting out several times. All have passed behavior evals with flying colors & are up to date on basic vaccines. Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions! Transportation can be arranged!

Conan "The Barkbarian" (9-10yrs,neutered male, pit bull mix): is a stunning older pit mix who has been us since September. Simply found warding the streets one day, he entered the facility neutered and we all thought someone would come looking for him. Alas though, no one showed up and he has been with us ever since. Conan is a sweet old gentle soul with a heart of gold. He has quickly become a favorite among staff and volunteers despite his tendency for ummm.... "accidents". He just has such a soft temperament. He's good with most dogs but Conan really relishes human contact & attention. He also seems cat friendly. No handling or food guarding issues. Conan is somewhere around 9-10 years. His hips have a low range of motion so he does have some trouble with stairs (mostly going up). Upon physical exam our vet felt and rotated his hips & fortunately she concluded, that while his motion is limited, he's not in any pain. Conan is incontinent though. Because of this he has been adopted out & returned,as well as returned from several foster homes pretty much immediately. We're now starting to worry that we won't be able to find a home willing to take on a project like Conan & we don't want him to continue to wallow away in a cage all day. With all the products out there these days for senior canines (from doggie diapers, to medication & supplements to help with incontinence) there are options. The option Conan needs though is a special someone who is willing to take on an equally special canine like himself. PLEASE HELP US FIND THAT SOMEONE! His petfinder bio is here: http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/21344890

Tyrus (14-16yrs, Male intact, Pit Bull Mix): Tyrus came to us on 11/19/11 on a day when owner surrenders were coming in left & right. When his former guardians were asked why they we're getting rid of Tyrus they provided a slew of reasons ranging from: new baby, can't afford, to simply can't handle anymore (?!). We were half expecting them to say they were moving and had developed allergies after all these years as well! There was also conflicting info provided on Tyrus's age. It was one baffling owner surrender! The staff did follow-up the next day to try & get confirmation on which age listed was correct. We were told at that time that they weren't really sure and that Tyrus could be anywhere from 13-16yrs.

Tyrus's surrender profile revealed that he was regularly left alone for 5-6hrs a day, seemed content when alone, is house broken, described as lazy, friendly with kids, playful with strangers, accustomed to brushing, gets along with other animals, and has no history of any behavior or medical problems. Tyrus did amazing on his behavior eval as well. He definitely has plenty of spunk left and he looooves tennis balls! He's hips have seen better days but he gets around just fine (especially when he sees a prized tennis ball!). No food guarding or any signs of aggression what-so-ever. Tyrus has now been dog & cat tested, and he did perfect on both tests. This senior fellow would fit into most households just fine. He's very quite and low-maintenance. There is just something about Tyrus that is very enamoring! I dare you to meet him and not to fall in love. Tyrus is currently healthy but as a recent arrival if he ends up sticking around the shelter for awhile he may end up breaking with a URI or kennel cough. Hopefully though we can find him a place soon so that's not an issue.
