Ha! I've got a real word nerd staying with me, and he's got a huge crush on Emily Brewster. Clicking on your link brought him running into the room. Thanks for the share! Flat adverbs, who knew?

That said, by biggest grammar peeve lately is when people "feel badly" about something. Can't we all just agree to feel bad?

Emily Brewster makes me feel all tingly in my pee pee area.

I don't buy any of the stereotypes listed on this thread, because that is simply what they are - stereotypes. Not every Englishwoman sounds like Mary Poppins, not every Irishman is drunk and looks for a brawl, not every Turk wants to grab your butt. I cringe when I hear ads with probably the worst female English accent on the planet selling Land Rovers to Americans.

Everyone in NY hated the Irish when they came to the US in droves and would work for less than anyone else. Then after abolition, everyone in NY hated the free slaves. "They took our jobs". This time around it's highly educated people from India that are the target of people's insular wrath.

Get over it. America wasn't founded to be a racist, insular state. Choose your words more carefully. Please.

There's are definitely legitimate culture differences in acceptable behavior. Americans are sometimes considered shallow (we make small talk) or overly friendly. It's always in comparison to one's own culture. This is an interesting take on American etiquette:

It's funny that anytime someone wants to stick up for the "poor" outsider they bash their own kind when doing so. I guess it's nice to see that two of the top four Catholic American nationalities are always used as an example. Now cut it out and never take sides against the family again, capice !

So I shouldn't complain if my ass is groped when I visit Turkey?
no, I'm saying you shouldn't get offended if someone says "Turkish guys are really gropey." Because they are. And it's terrible.

I have Asian people in my building that sometimes leave their shoes outside their doors. But God forbid I think of that as a cultural thing. I mean, after all, some non-Asian might have somewhere in the universe, at some point left their shoes outside their door.

There are way too many overly sensitive people in this town that can never acknowledge that certain races have certain characteristics. They naively insist on seeing the world through silly homogenized glasses.

human beings in general need to pipe down. but the more I travel, the more I notice that some cultures crank up the volume more than others. don't recall my ears getting assaulted by any undue decibels in India, though. but I didn't venture much past Mumbai.

To all the prissy pants here: sometimes cultures have bad things about them as well. Like in Korea, where nearly everyone believes leaving a fan on in an enclosed room will kill you in your sleep. Or in Turkey, where guys are grabby with women and not bashful about taking a pinch here and there. Or Japan, where the culture of shame and subservience and reservedness has led to all sorts of weird freaky rape/tentacle/little girl/beastiality porn. You all need to stop being so damn sensitive.

With that said, not sure if Indian people talking loudly is a cultural thing. I’ve never really noticed it. Maybe it is in some areas, but India is a huge place with a lot of different cultures in it.

Thanks PBW whoever you are. Yeesh, I only posted to learn more if this is a cultural thing. And, no, racism is not involved... It seemed no matter what I said in a kind tone to request them to respectfully keep it down, they kind of smiled and said ok, no problem, and then went ahead and resumed talking loudly right outside my door for 20-minutes. I think the knee-jerk reactions posted here that this was some sort of attack is absolutely ridiculous. Of course I am understanding, but there is a thin line between being tolerant and putting up with behavior that makes no sense. Case closed.

To be fair, the OP told of their particularly annoying neighbors, ask asked if it was cultural. The racists comments came afterwards. The answers could have been, no, these people are just douches.
and who knows if the answer was yes it's cultural maybe the OP would be slightly more tolerant (although I wouldn't be - loud neighbors suck, no matter who they are).

When at first I saw the title of the post "Why do they have to speak so loud?," I thought it was referring to the noises coming from the exodus of Ferris High School students down my block. Silly me.

Y'all need to get your wood cabins in them piney woods built real soon if you want peace and quiet. Just sayin'.

That, and the fact that they're using a message board whose owner is notorious for deleting comments he disagrees with, yet somehow turns a blind eye to every racist comment on here.

It's unfortunate that the most used message board in town gives all of us such a shitty image to the outside world.

This entire thread is US racism at its worst. "I've loud Asian/Indian neighbors. Why are all Asian/Indian's so loud?" That is such a wrong, ignorant, racist generalization. And the only reason you tools think you can get away with it, is because the US never put Hindus in shackles and made them work in cotton fields.

Racism isn't just about slavery. It's about this kind of idiotic generic statements that belittle other races.

I do think the noise thing is a feature of a lot of cultures...we have neighbors in back of us who will sit across from each other at their picnic table and SCREAM, literally scream, into each other's faces: this is a normal conversational pitch for them. At a distance of about 200 feet from my bedroom window, they are so loud that I have to turn on a white noise machine to concentrate or sleep when they are outside simply having a late family get together. I don't know where they're from( from their accents, I would say they are probably Dominican.) I don't know why they are so loud...are they from large families and thus get used to screaming in order to be heard? Are they more excited and exuberant about life in general? Couldn't tell you. All I know is that I myself grew up in an uptight, white, waspy family where a soft, relaxed voice is a prized commodity. Although I know I need to be tolerant of others, I admit that it annoys the HELL out of me when other people don't share my cultural attitude about quiet. I'm also an elementary school teacher who constantly has to remind my students to USE AN INDOOR VOICE, please.

Now lets go easy with the cultural thing ...

India is a country of 1.1 billion people. It has a multitude of problems - population, illiteracy, pollution, etc. Maybe they are fresh off the boat - if yes, tell them (first politely, then harshly) about how things work over here.

File a complaint through the proper channels - landlord, condo association, board, etc. Just talk to them and tell them the sound insulation is really bad, so please keep it down. Finally if they fail to listen, call the non-emergency JCPD number and complain about the noise. That will shut up most rowdy people.

And just for the record, not all people in India talk at the top of their voice outside the neighbor's door. And we all know which culture over here is known to talk really really loud ...

Every culture I'm sure has some annoying traits...
