Umm, the $15m was the land sale price, not construction cost.

What I can't believe is that it's still not illegal to sell city assets to pay for operating expenses. Anyone remember the Parking Authority selling it's lots because they were so corrupt and inept the payroll put them in the red?
ok, the article is misleading because the headline says it's a "$15 million development" which would imply the cost of the land and the actual development of it totals $15 million.

I am wondering by how much this will increase the flooding in the area. I am thinking we'll get up to about 10ft on Grove and Grand.

I hope there is a clause that if they don't build it that the developers must return the land to Jersey City or sell it to someone who will develop the land.

Also, it seems incredible that it would take the City Council 12 months to approve the developer's plans. But what do I know about development? What is typical?

I think it would be great if this happened: jobs of all levels, $ for the city, and making a piece of unattractive land useful.

But isn't this nextdoor to all the chromium (a known carcinogen) contamination? So you live there and then have the convenience of a cancer treatment center right there.

Jersey City plans for $15M development next to med center that will boast high-tech cancer treatment center, commercial space and 1,000 housing units

A city-owned lot adjacent to the Jersey City Medical Center may soon be home to a proton therapy cancer treatment center, thanks to a $15 million deal being brokered by the city and a New York-based developer.

The city has been trying to unload the 2.5-acre parcel to help plug a hole in its $477 million 2011 municipal budget.
The planned development, to include two multi-story buildings, is slated to house the treatment center, commercial space and about 1,000 housing units.

The project is expected to create 500 construction jobs and more than 2,500 full-time jobs once it opens, officials said.
?This is land that is currently providing nothing, no tax dollars and no jobs,? Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy said in a statement.
?We are hopeful and optimistic that this project will go forward and that the City Council will support it, as it will be a boon to the city and further will make Jersey City a magnet for leading-edge science and technology.?

Hospital officials are also thrilled, with JCMC CEO Joseph Scott saying he envisions hospital patients receiving treatment at the new center, and vice versa.

?We believe there will be synergy,? he said. ?We would love to see it happen.?

Proton therapy is a treatment that only 1 percent of cancer patients receive. It targets a tumor, as opposed to radiation therapy, which can damage tissue surrounding the tumor, according to Scott.

Next week, the City Council is scheduled to approve a transfer of the property, which was once proposed to be home to a City Hall Annex, to the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency, which has chosen Tessler Developments as the designated developer.

Tessler officials could not be reached to comment.
Site plans for the proposed development will need city approval, which city spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill said could take up to 12 months. Construction could begin as early as late 2012, she said.
