No area of Jersey City is safe, there are only those areas that are safer than others.

If your first priority is being safe, DO NOT move to the Journal Square area. I know women who have been followed by suspicious characters from the PATH station to their apartment. JSQ might be tons better than Greenville or Bergen-Lafayette, but there's still a huge difference between JSQ and downtown, not that downtown is crime free.

Stick to areas around Exchange Place and Grove Street. The trouble with renting in Newport is that you will need to transfer trains to the Newark PATH line, which will add 10 minutes to your commute at peak hours and more off peak.
In my experience, there is quite a large number of nursing and medical students and staff around the Grove Street area. A cheaper alternative is the area around Journal Square.

If you have a car, you also need to find a parking space too.

Paulus Hook, Newport Pavonia, Hamilton Park, Van Vorst Park, Liberty Harbor (basically anywhere in downtown JC - Newport, Grove or Exchange street stops are all pretty safe).

I am looking for a 1 BR apartment in Jersey City. Although I have a car, I would like easy access to transportation to and from University Hospital in Newark.
What areas in Jersey City are safe and I should concentrate my search on?
