yeah they have tea, and iced tea/coffee, hot chocolate, and some pastries and empanadas and cookies. Maybe some juice stuff? I can't remember.

Well it's not just the caffeine withdrawal issue, though admittedly is was in part. There was also the pressure of the morning time constraints in conjunction with the built up expectation of really good coffee. This also came on the heals of some annoying experiences at some other downtown restaurants over the last few weeks.

Overall I get frustrated with the laid back attitude people have about work. Also, I don't get why a coffee shop wouldn't want to be open as early as possible. I would think a new business would really want to make a good impression.

For all I know the folks at Dames could have had some sort of emergency this morning.

Still my freshly ground beans, brewed in a percolator on the stove is pretty awesome. I get up really early and often start working by 6 from home. I held off having my coffee until after 7. I could have had my coffee when I started my day.

Again, If I sold coffee I would want to be open as early as statutorily possible.

It's certainly not the end of the world. But it is another trip up by a local restaurant.

I actually run a business development team for a pretty large and well known online publisher and technology provider. Our clients are professional service providers

Disappointed clients can be pretty costly not only to us, but to our clients' clients.

My team knows what I expect and they deliver just that. There's never an issue with expectation setting.

My god. We're talking about a coffee shop that just opened. Maybe they had an emergency or something? It's not a 5-star restaurant that didn't honor your reservation. I hope you aren't a business owner. You sound like you'd be a real gem to work for.

ahhhh, the coffee and fresh farm dairy is so good at this place that I would have waited until someone showed up and opened the doors. Creamy and delicious. It's really that good. You can't replicate it at home. Simple is great for many reasons, egg sand, smoothies, ginger iced tea, but this place blows them away at coffee, no question.

Granted I was a little cranky this morning when I posted because I did not get my coffee on my usual time, especially having gone out of my way for it. Still it was frustrating that it was 7:20 and there was no sign of life in the place. Again I have to say Basic was open as it typically is at it's published time

It's been my observation and experience that the vast majority of the restaurants downtown JC don't do a great job. Some are better than others.

Being a homeowner wanting to keep a positive outlook and encourage improvement I've been a booster, supporter and pretty big tipper of most of them. But frankly I'm growing more intolerant of the mediocre service and just a little better than "ok" food.

In light of the state of the economy I imagine a lot of people would rather stay home than spend my money on mediocre service and food. One would think the restaurant owners would be more aware of this and step up their performance.

Going forward I will probably go into Manhattan when I want to dine out. I'd rather pay a little more for better food and service.

My days of blind local loyalty are over. It will be a long time before I try Dames again.

THEY WEREN'T OPEN YET!!!.
Their sign says business hours start at 7:00 am. Mondays through Fridays
I believed the Stockinette failed in large part because of their hours.
I have been resistant to get on line and criticize businesses.
But Dames' failure to be open this morning at 7 am is just another example of these restaurant owners who think they're going to open their doors and customers are just going to run in giving them their money just because they're there.
Fortunately Basic was open as it always is during it's published hours of operation.
While Dames did get some good reviews on there, the failure to be open in the middle of the week soon after the start up here is not a good first step.

Even the Dunkin Donuts behind the PATH pulls this stunt. It states 6am but it really means 6:10 am. The hired help just smiles and ignores what goes on. By the way I went to Dames and was impressed I like the atmosphere, and the tea and danishes they have. But these mom & pop places don't run it like an airline though. They should be more like the train system...on time. I hope Dames doesn't get discourged which seems like it may be occuring already.

I have now been to Dames about 4 times. The coffee is excellent. I think it's a great addition to the neighborhood. It is more expensive but I think it's well worth it. This is real coffee.

Apparently they will have a backyard garden area open soon which will help to give the place more of a hangout and linger vibe which I think it needs.

You aren't just paying for coffee, but for the space and the atmosphere. Its a nice space to spend time in, comfortable and sharp.

I have picked up my morning coffee at Dames everyday since they opened. Best coffee in JC by far.

The woman there in the morning is a sweetheart.

Please stop in, check it all out, and support them!!

Compared to deli coffee, sure, on price alone it's expensive... but this is a different caliber of coffee. It's well-priced compared to true 'competitors': Stumptown, Blu Bottle, even Starbucks isn't that cheap (and the quality is better, in my opinion).

They're in soft-launch mode, they said they plan on extending the hours when they fully launch. They are open for the morning work commute, Stockinette was never able to pull that off.

Hope I didn't come across as too "uptown" :)

I cited their paraphernalia as a sign that they've smartly invested in the tools that matter... not simply bought a brand name machine to produce inferior coffee...

I agree with re: to the lecture... uneccessary, especially since it assumes a lack of knowledge. A simple, unapologetic "no, but we do have..." is always better.

& I don't personally own much of any coffee paraphernalia myself... except for a french press...

I buy my grounds... roasted on the same day, ground by me... and consumed in 3 days. then repeat...

needless to say, I can't always get freshly roasted beans so a place like Dame's is VERY WELCOME!

Cheers!

Nice to see somebody who truly appreciates what Dames is doing with coffee--and seems appropriate it's a person who chose "wine_theif" [sic] as their nick.

The first week Dames was open, while waiting for my Americano I made the mistake of merely inquiring if they ever serve flavored coffee.

The barista responded with a friendly two-minute lecture on why flavored coffee isn't fit for any coffee drinker who truly appreciates their java. I like a good cup of coffee as much as anybody--probably more than the average Joe--but please don't make me feel like a peon because sometimes I enjoy a hazelnut brew. You think that added flavors ruin a coffee? I feel the same way about adding milk, so...to each his own.

I see that there are those folks who are true purists and appreciate a real high-end espresso or latte. But once the baristas begin to come across with the same snooty attitude as a Park Avenue sommalier, remember: You're serving this drink in a paper cup! This isn't a Chateau Lafite bordeaux. It's a cup of coffee.

I will freely admit I don't understand why one would prefer a digital grinder (I like my coffee analog, thank you very much) or how a "gram" scale and a pressure release on the grouphead will make a better cup. But I do know this: I drink my coffee black, no milk, cream, or sugar. I don't order lattes and only rarely get an espresso after a nice restaurant dinner. I buy my beans whole, keep them fresh in an airtight container and grind them in a burr grinder right before brewing single cups in a special press with hot water at a precise temperature. So what do I really know about coffee? Not enough, I suppose.

Hopefully I don't come across as too bitter. I respect what Dames is trying to do and I'll certainly be back for more coffee. The last time I ordered a drip coffee there, the barista explained that she didn't feel comfortable serving me from a pot that was brewed over 90 minutes earlier. So she prepared a fresh cup from a Melitta single-serve brewer, and it was fabulous.

Keep up with the great service--just don't let the uptown attitude turn away your downtown customers.
