Ian, if you can see, I said that I called out the wrong person and I apologized. Settle down, Skippy.

Oh and BTW I used to live in the LES before moving out to JC. The people there are just as a-holey as the people in JC.

CatDog, it's really a-hole of you to call a little baby names. WTF did that baby do to you? What kind of a piece of crap are you to ridicule a child just because you don't like the owners of a restaurant? Call them whatever you want, it's out of line to bring their child into your rant.

And to Taqueria, my family is at your establishment a lot. At least every other week we either have lunch there during the week or on the weekend. My kids love eating there and I know that when we are at Taqueria, they'll eat everything that's on their plate. It is disheartening to see your disdain towards your customers...is this how you feel about us? So you are just going to shut down your restaurant in JC and piss on your loyal customers, who by the way, probably helped you open a restaurant in NYC in the first place? Wow.

The two of youu need a time out and think about the tantrums both you threw on this board. Seriously. And while CatDog is just being a d-bag poster on an anonymous board, Taqueria needs to think about what they say about their customers before they post it on the internet for all to see. Are you going to hang this exchange up on your wall too?

Edited: Ooops, I called out the wrong person, sorry Ian!

I've never had a problem with the food or service but that comment left me a little cold. I think I'll bring my business elsewhere where my "class" won't come into question.

I'm also confused by the poster's observations of the level of "class" of JC customers versus LES customers. Both neighborhoods seem to have a similar "class" of people, from my experiences. Maybe JC is more likely to have people who are actually native to the east coast, while Manhattan is more likely to have transplants from say, the midwest...and so they might be more "friendly" on the surface? :)

Good riddance. This place screams of NYC (pretentious, subpar food); they'll fit right in with all the other underwhelming Mexican options in the city.

Wake up people. You live 10 minutes from one of the largest Hispanic populations on the East coast (Union City / North Bergen / West New York). If you want Mexican food, close your eyes and throw a dart at a map of Mexican restaurants in that area - you can't go wrong.

Mentioning our little girl is exactly the class that we have come to expect from jersey city. Luckily...(actually luck has nothing to do with it) taqueria downtown is so busy and runs well enough on its own, so we can focus on taqueria LES. Can't even tell you the difference in class in the clientele in NYC than that in Jersey. So don't worry, it's just a matter of time before we close the jersey store. You can say whatever you want about our store and about us and you do and that's fine. We've lived with it for years. But if you have something to say about our child who has nothing to do with anything, I urge you to come in and say it directly to our face and for once not cower behind the anonimity of the internet. Anyway...everyone else have a nice day. Let the jclist discussions begin...

I'm coming up on the 1 year anniversary of "you treated my friends and I like shit for the last time and I'm actually not coming back." I hope Taqueria closes. Besides, this would be a great location for a Taco Truck Shop location.

I've been there twice in the last 3 weeks. I saw the husband working on the garden there the first time, and the couple there last time. It's expected they may be there less. I've noticed absolutely nothing change in the food.

So now the Taqueria location on the LES is open, right? I have noticed that the owners are never at the Grove Street location anymore. And to my dismay, the quality of the food has gone down a tad, in my opinion. Sad.

I never had bad service there, was just a bit confused on procedure my first time there but no problem after that. Like someone said above- you barely have time to interact with them to get rude service! Unless you need your hand held while you hem and haw over the menu. All you have to do is tell them what you want and sit down!

Andrea the owner is about 8 months pregnant, so Her and Phil have some lovely karma coming their way considering the way they have treated people with kids in the past. LOL I wonder if their house is going to have "DO NOT TOUCH" signs all over the place like the restaurant....

I'm not someone who goes in often enough to be recognized by the staff, but I've always experienced friendly, courteous service from everyone there. And great food to boot!

I'd hardly consider a small restaurant to be a "retail" business.

I've also never experienced any bad service. When I go there I go there to get food, not smiles, songs, and dances. I'm not sure what other people are expecting when they go to get food.

The food their is great. Just hate all the LA decor. Though when Mike Piazza enters Cooperstown as a Met ill be at the taqueria to order and let them know.

They can be very short with you, especially if you don't order things the way they like it. For example, if I want 2 fish tacos, with one without anything on top I make sure I say "1 fish taco - plain and 1 fish taco - regular". If you say it any other way the guy gets annoyed. Also they seemed to really dislike kids. This seems to have changed...maybe they realized that lots of people here now have kids so they have to put up with them.

They actually are a lot nicer than when I first started going there...and I don't mind the attitude as long as the food is good and cheap.

We actually had a mexican friend from CA visit us and we took her there. She was skeptical but then after eating everythign she said it was authentic and good.

I lived in south Texas for ten years, traveled everywhere in Mexico. Have good friends from Texas (native) who live in Manhattan and Brooklyn. The first time I dragged them - after weeks of goading and pleading - to Taqueria, they were so ready to shoot it down. One of them asked directly: "Why are you wasting all of our time bringing us to Jersey City for tacos?"

Five minutes later when our food came out, they were all raving: posting comments on Facebook to the effect that they'd found the best Mexican food north of Nuevo Laredo, etc. That kind of thing.

Taqueria rules. Taqueria beats the pants off of 99.9% of the taco joints in San Antonio and Austin (and I get the apples-oranges things about comparing true Mex to Tex-Mex, but still). And that's about the highest praise I can offer. If you don't like it, eat wherever you like. But it still rules.

Also: never had any issues with rudeness, etc. The place is phenomenal, and Jersey City is lucky to have it.

you walk in
you look at menu
you order
you pay
you sit down

Where is there time for anyone to be rude? And who cares, its a great taco joint.

I've been going to this place pretty regularly since they've opened. I really don't get the attitude complaints. They've never failed to greet me by name and always ask how I'm doing. Some nights they're so busy, the exchange is very brief and business like. They've NEVER been rude to me. I've experienced far worse at the hands of the Hard Grove staff. As I've said in an earlier post, my relationship with Taqueria is fairly uncomplicated: I give 'em money, they give me tacos. They usually say "thank you" and "enjoy," too. Maybe the complainers are a tad high maintenance? If you want the warm fuzzies, then I recommend Sava's, where the owner calls everyone "honey" or "baby" and you end up feeling like she's the Polish grandmother you never had. Of course, these same people are probably the ones who would complain about Sava's decor.

Viewpoints about the owners' service/attitude aside, it actually is quite common for taquerias / taco stands in LA and much of the Southwest to have a limited menu focused on tacos.

I've been to Taqueria many times over the years and never experienced any rudeness. Maybe curt service, but heck, this is a place where you order at a counter and take a number. This is not fine dining.

Their food, in my experience, has always been excellent. The pork and lamb tacos are superb. It does remind of the taqueria-style food that I ate when I lived in Southern AZ. The chili-cheese tamales are my perfect comfort food.

We brought my boyfriend's older brother, a blue-collar guy from upstate NY, there the other day (someone who would feel very put off by pretentiousness), and he couldn't stop raving about the food (he had the hominy pork soup, which I've never tried). There menu is fairly normal sized for a Mexican place -- plenty of choices between tamales, tacos, burritos, quesadilla, etc. They usually have a couple daily specials as well. The service is always speedy.

Anyway, I just wanted to vouch for what I think is a pretty good JC business, that is running things there own way (ACDC stools, 90s music, and all). If you don't like it, certainly don't go there. (Also don't go there if you don't like the song "Black Hole Sun." They really love that song.)

Based on the line when I go, it doesn't look like they are suffering for business. More pork tacos for me!

Visited Taqueria shortly after moving to JC a little over 4 years ago and never went back. Never understood why people get so turned on by this place. Their tacos were average, at best. The service was indifferent. I always tell anyone wanting true, authentic Mexican food to trek down to Bayonne and visit El Aguila Dorada. Once I discovered THAT place, it became my golden standard by which all other Mexican places in the area get evaluated. Mind you, I am no Mexican, but I married one that was born and raised down there, and she concurs. Of course, to each their own, and I actually wish Taqueria well. I rather have a functional, profitable business in DTJC, instead of another failed one, but I am not supporting them.
