When I started this thread back in May of 2006 -- I really had hope that this would be stopped --
oh well... Maybe we can still stop the gas pipeline!

Ummm... have you heard about the internet before? Complaining is what the web, and this forum in particular, are all about.

I think we all understand that it's too late to do anything about this. But that doesn't mean can't sill vent about it.

I've heard of the interwebs, are they the same?
Fair enough. You vent, I vent.

Work has been continuing on the memorial, but I still can't see this as anything less than a total embarrassment on the part of Liberty State Park and Jersey City.

Let's take a look, shall we?

Resized Image

That's the "money" shot where you're supposed to be able to see the silhouette of the towers where they once stood. But it only works from this one, exact angle.

The memorial is called "Empty Sky," apparently to signify the empty spot in the skyline left vacant from the collapse of those buildings. But what about the new 1,776-foot tall tower rising in the background? Ignore that! Focus on the buildings that are MISSING.

Let's look from the other side:

Resized Image

Ah, yes! Giant steel towers. How beautiful. See how it fills the empty sky? Oh wait, we're looking from the wrong side. It doesn't really signify anything from this end.

Moving around to look from the north, and we get the worst view of all:

Resized Image

See that beautiful building peeking out the back? That's the old Central Railroad Terminal, where millions of immigrants traveled to all points west after landing at Ellis Island. A major part of our nation's proud history. It's no longer visible from the north thanks to this obnoxious monolith.

And what does it look like (besides a giant steel wall)?

Here's a quote directly from the 9/11 Memorial's web site (http://www.nj911memorial.org):

"The length of each wall is exactly equal to one side of the former World Trade Center Towers as the height of the wall reflects proportion of the former buildings if they were lying on their side." (emphasis mine)

Really? A memorial for office buildings that collapsed in an act of terrorism, and you saw nothing wrong with making it look like the twin towers LYING ON THEIR SIDES?? They're even embedded nicely in that grassy hill that runs along it. Bravo.

This whole thing is an abomination. A boondoggle. A catastrophe. A decidedly embarrassing fabricated gaffe! (See what I did there?)

And it was all created with almost zero public input or chance for contention. Once again, we celebrate the destruction of WTC at the expense of everything else that makes NYC and the Jersey City waterfront a beautiful place.

This is not the way to remember the 745 poor New Jerseyans who lost their lives on September 11th.

the dramatic impact of this monument - such as it is - seems to hinge on the view of the empty sky beyond the columns. what's going to happen once the lower Manhattan skyline is filled?

This really destroys the view of Liberty State Park from the north. No more postcard view of the Central Railroad of New Jersey (CRRNJ) Terminal. All you see is an ugly beige wall that looks like an unfinished construction site.

Someone should send the worst picture of it to all the media.

Like everything else that gets done in LSP, a joke.
I think the idea was to build a wall so you can't see where the WTC was. What a major waste of $$$$$$ and you rarely ever see them working on it. Probably will be finished for the 20th anniversary at this rate.

It's an abomination of public spce that these grandious architects from Frederic Schwartz of NYC had zero concern for any of our North or South sight lines from arguably the most important and visited State Parks in the USA.

This is not a crowning achievement for them considering they have done a number of well thought out projects. Drop them a line.........

The offices of the architects that designed this piece of crap are in the West Village. I cant help but think a unique way of expressing our displeasure would be to build a brick wall across the front of their building in the middle of the night. We could call it a memorial to the countless victims of bad design.

So true. I've always said that it is for folks who can't look beyond 9/11. And now, when looking at downtown NYC from the park, neither can we!

Here is the curent view of the 9-11 Memorial from Paulus Hook. Note the white sail boat to the left of the wall. Though it's not a very tall sail boat before the monster wall was built you could watch it sail around the tip. Not any more.

While I agree the memorial structure that is being built is hideous I am angrier that the memorial destroyed what was already a nicely designed spot to enjoy small concerts or other similarly sized events while taking in the view of the river and skyline.

The Jersey City Council and Mayor Healy unanimously opposed the memorial, from what I recall, but they have no say in the matter because it's state land.

I haven't met a single person that thinks it's beautiful. And if you are just happy that there's a memorial being built, allow me to direct your attention to the dozens of other memorials we already have in the city.

The walls will display the names of each of those who died in the attack. It's a NJ memorial, not NY.

And about it being ugly and hideous....that's a personal opinion. I can assure you there are many of us who like the idea and are happy that it's a done deal. All in the eyes of the beholders.

That wall is FUGLY! and quite honestly, I don't see why Jersey City needs a 9/11 memorial when one is being built across the river!

oh good lord, it's even worse than the drawings promised. how can this possibly be honoring the dead, when it is so disrespectful to the living?

Spent some time at Liberty State Park today. I know at this point nothing can be done about the 911 memorial monstrosity down there but I sure hope Frederic Schwartz, the architects invloved, get an earful from time time.

Not sure if this has been pointed out, but these walls will interfere much more with our views of Jersey City. Not that the Goldman Sachs building is the pillar of architecture, but it's still nice to be able to look at the JC waterfront from that section of LSP. Most of that view will be totally blocked by these walls.

Two buidings were destroyed. They were memorialized with 2 wars, the destruction of the U.S. economy and probably 200,000 dead.
Enough memorializing already.

There are precedents: Hitler memorialized the burning of the Reichstag with a World War and 50-70 MILLION people killed.

With fewer "memorials" the world would be a better place.

This memorial will only service the needs and benefit NY. It has to be a big-ass thing so they can see it from across the river.

Why can't they stick it at the back of the park, so it doesn't interfere with our view of NY?
