Google MapsA Newport Centre mall employee showed two suspects who stole a dog from a store there who's boss. The two suspects could be connected to a carjacking that happened after shortly after they were thwarted in their attempt to steal a designer dog.

Police believe that two men, one of them armed, who attempted to carjack the vehicle of a Jersey City woman near Newport Centre Mall yesterday afternoon could be the same men who moments earlier stole a designer dog from a pet store inside the mall.

The Jersey City woman was driving a 1999 blue Chevy along Erie Street with her 5-year-old grandson when at about 4:15 p.m. she turned east on Sixth Street and a man with curly hair jumped in front of the car, police said.

According to police, the man was being chased by another man who was brandishing a handgun. The first man tried to open the front passenger-side door, screaming for help as his pursuer yelled "Stop ... or I'll shoot," police said.

The woman drove away from the two men and called police.

Authorities believe the carjacking suspects may be linked to bizarre robbery inside Newport Centre Mall that occurred about a half hour earlier.

Elizabeth Rubet, 22, a clerk at The Pet Company, told The Jersey Journal that a heavy-set man in his late 30s approached her a shortly before 4 p.m. yesterday, inquiring about a 3-month-old Chiweenie, a designer Chihuahua and Dachshund mix.

Rubet, believing the man to be a legitimate customer, retrieved the dog from behind its glass enclosure and gave it to him, she said.
