What I'd like to know is do these CSX cars travel along the proposed pipeline route?

If so, the proposed pipeline route is simple madness.

Kearny shmearny...

Chlorine gas rail cars also go to Bayonne chemical plants that use chlorine, right through Jersey City.

Bayonne has been been dubbed "the most dangerous mile in America" due to chlorine gas use.

Soooo...Spectra not only are building a natural gas bomb inside Jersey City, but they are building it alongside a rail system used to transport chlorine gas.

An accident or terrorist attack on the pipeline, given murphy's law of timing, could not only create a gas blast zone shown on maps, but could release a toxic chlorine gas cloud that could potentially impact millions of people?

Have I got that right? If so, WHAT THE F**K ARE SPECTRA THINKING????

Does anyone know if a Chlorine leak happened, would going to the top of a tall building help? I am familiar with the principals of fluid dynamics, all the variables to account for like wind, topography, etc...but in general is the gas heavy enough that it could make a difference?

According to the MSDS for chlorine, the vapor density is about 2.5x that of air, so it'll definitely settle to the ground in the absence of wind. But if you're a mile away from the release point, then any gas that reaches you is probably windborne anyway.

Its actually west of Bayonne, mostly in Elizabeth: http://www.cnn.com/CNN/Programs/ander ... two-miles-in-america.html

Greenpeace says Kuehne chemical plant in Kearny is "highest-risk" facility in nation and terrorism or accident there could imperil 12 million people

============================

No spills when five tank cars delivering chlorine go off tracks at Kuehne plant in Kearny, and no evacuations necessary

Tuesday, April 05, 2011

KEARNY - A CSX train delivering chlorine to the Kuehne Chemical complex on North Hackensack Avenue derailed yesterday because of a bent rail track, police said.

The five tank cars that derailed never overturned and none of the chemical was spilled, although hazmat teams responded to the scene shortly after the derailment at 12:42 p.m., police said.

The derailment occurred because one of the tracks near the factory was bent, officials said, adding it is not clear how long the track had been bent.

There were no evacuations in the area nor were any traffic detours necessary, police said.

A Conrail crew placed the tank cars back on the track, according to Conrail spokesman John Enright.

"....The document lists worst-case scenarios for chlorine and sulfur dioxide tanks. "In the event of a total failure of a railroad tank car of chlorine which discharges its entire contents within a 10-minute time frame, the resulting cloud of chlorine vapor would be immediately dangerous to both lifeand health for a distance exceeding 14 miles," the report states.

....chemical release could threaten the lives of 12 million people in a 16-mile radius."
