They just stole my Civic (posted in a separate thread). This is the 2nd Civic stolen from me in 3 months. I just put new tires on some aftermarket wheels on the car yesterday. The wheels have been on the car for about 20 hours, as I type this. I wish all they were taking were my wheels. They have my whole car. Dealing with insurance sucks, and because it's an older car, after deductible, I'm left with nothing.

My Jeep Cherokee Sport was stolen twice. Cops did nothing, I requested more frequently surveying the area, I was told to start a neighborhood watch.

Kayr - My Jeep Cherokee too - stolen once and shortly after i got it back they broke in again and did some damage....i guess they got interrupted mid-take or just didn't know what they were doing. Parked downtown as well.
Police weren't surprised, Cherokees are popular targets....

when you park a car in jersey city you have to walk away knowing you might not see it again.

Unfortunately, it's not just wheels. Our car (a Jeep) was stolen sometime last night or the early morning hours of March 14th from in front of Basic. It had out-of-state plates (NY). Good times...

Also if you turn your sterring wheel all the way to 1 side, that'll prevent them from stealing the front wheels atleast.
Then you need to also get a hood lock so when they try 2 cut your battery wire to disable the alarm (stock or aftermarket), they can't get the hood open.

I would check Craig's List and the Acura enthusiasts forums to see if they surface. I belong to a few car forums and a member saw his xenon headlights and ballasts for sale from a new member who was "parting out his wrecked car".
Really disgusting what some degenerates to other people's property. I don't care if it's a beaten-to-hell Kia or a mint Ferrari. People pay money for these cars.

I saw that car on Saturday morning - I did not see it on cinder blocks, though. It was sitting on the rotors!

They tend to go after wheels that will fit the most common cars. The wheels that come with a "sport" or "upgrade" package when you buy your car are usually the targets, as are aftermarket wheels. They tend to go for Hondas/ Acura, Toyota/ Lexus, or Nissan/ Infiniti. These brands will fit the most number of cars and be easier to sell later on. The wheels on the Honda Fit Sport are very popular right now. You would be surprised at how quickly they can strip a car of it's wheels. A group of two or three people with experience can have all 4 wheels of a car in about 3 minutes. They just need a tire iron and some bricks. If anyone is really concerned about this, I suggest investing in a set of wheel locks. Search Gorilla Locks. They cost about $50 and can save you from forking out $500 or more for a new set of rims.

anyone know if there are a particular type of car/wheels they go after? Sports cars? I don't know what the black market value is on wheels, but that seems desperate.
Also, how long would it take to get the wheels off? Those pneumatic things would attract attention, so seems like it would be slow work with a tire iron? Once again, cops on the beat would deter criminals from these sort of endeavors. Not holding my breath...

Wheel thefts aren't actually all that uncommon. It's pretty easy to take a wheel off (far easer than unmounting a tire). Since these have been happening more frequently downtown I would guess some low-life crew is targeting the area.
This is a good reminder that EVERYONE who parks on the street should have wheel locks for their car. They're not too expensive ($50) and they're probably enough of a deterrent that a thief isn't going to take your wheels.

This happened to me once when I lived in JC. After the initial anger wore off I actually laughed a little....then I got an estimate for new tires and got pissed again. Then about a month later my stereo was stolen, JC is great.

What kind of car was it?
There's been a lot of wheel thefts lately esp within the last 2 weeks & on cars with non NJ plates.

Not really that radical well in that part of Downtown maybe. But in inner cities where poverty and crime are all too familiar then yes it's normal. Look at the south Bronx cars on cinder blicks were common. And don't forget about Newark the stolen car capital of the country. I haven't seen nor heard of that type of car crime in years.

Yesterday the owner of a car parked on Barrow near York, opposite the park, discovered that the wheels of his car, not just the tires, the entire enchilada, were stolen off his vehicle during the night leaving it sitting on two cinderblocks. The fourth wheel was left dangling as it was too close to the curb. Police were called & all that. No doubt the usual suspects will be rounded up. Those who saw it were in awe. Such a scene would be radical even in the hood.
