This was standard practice in my hometown (central PA). Instead of the street sweeper they had a three vehicle snow removal brigade. Its only needed a few times a year and seems to be a worthwhile investment considering the hassel (and in some cases - danger!) people are dealing with. This morning, York Street between Monmouth to Jersey still looked like it hadn't been touched by a plow!

Can't we just dump it in the river? Isn't that what NYC does? That would seem to make the most sense.

LOL. Yup tend to agree. Guess it's time to vote these folks out of office and lodge complaints.

Many municipalities truck the snow away -- that takes contracts and funds -- which we do not have. It's shameful how they have left our streets.

Type in "280 Grove Street" in the service request form.

Don't bother the Mayor. At the first flake he started mixing some hot buttered rum. Councilmen Donnelly, Velazquez, and Sottolano are awaiting instructions from the Mayor. Councilman Guaghan does not know that it snowed since he does not have e-mail, internet, television, or a telephone yet. Councilwoman Lopez heard the forecast and hightailed it to Florida. Councilman Fulop's cost/benefit analysis showed shoveling to be a waste of city resources. Councilwoman Richardson is 100% disabled and cannot shovel. Councilwoman Flood heard the words "snow" and "city hall" and called a lawyer for her son.

But the parking lot was clean as a whistle, with the snow dumped on the street and sidewalk, where the peons will have to deal with it.

To check on plowing and garbage pick up on your street, phone 201.547.4900.

AS of a moment ago, Mayor's office reports that "side streets will be plowed today" and garbage pick up has resumed. (Garbage is piled high on my street which has not been plowed).

The city doesn't have the contracts in place to clear the snow out. It's just plowing so the snow will simply be moved from one place to another, not removed. It is removed in most areas of NY and in other NJ cities (like Hackensack) that have the contracts and funding to do so. Its simply a matter of (lack) of funding.

Journal Square is barely plowed. If you are not on a main street you are screwed. In one case they just plowed all the snow to the middle of the street and now no cars can get through at all.

The sidewalks are a mess too. Oh well I guess we all have to be patient.

As one of those homeowners who is now sitting delayed for 6 hours at the airport desperate to get home to JC - and yes, to shovel and be a responsible neighbor - please give the benefit of the doubt for now :)

As much as I want to do this, since it made my walk to JSQ so miserable (and dangerous) this morning, I feel like it's not fair to homeowners yet, since the friggin' town still hasn't even plowed the side streets...

You say that like this is the proper forum to address city issues. Though I thoroughly understand why you have mistaken this for the Jersey City Department of Complaints and Corrective Actions.

Please report unshoveled sidewalks:

http://mygovhelp.com/jerseycitynj/_cs ... .aspx?ssessionid=&rqst=18

-------------------------------------

Chapter 296 (Streets and Sidewalks) of the Jersey City Municipal Code includes the following sections pertaining to snow removal:

§ 296-1. Duties of owners or occupants; time for removal. (Remove within 8 hours of snowfall)
Every owner, occupant or person having charge of a building or vacant lot shall, in case of a snowfall, clear such snow from the sidewalks and gutters thereof to the extent of one foot outside the curb in front of the building or lot, as well as on the side thereof where the building or lot faces on more than one street, within eight hours after the snow has fallen. If the snow has fallen during the night, removal shall be finished within eight hours after sunrise.

§ 296-2. Snow removal. (DO NOT throw snow into the street)
After a snowstorm, no person shall shovel, throw or deposit any snow or ice from any sidewalk or gutter into the street after it has been plowed and opened up by city snow removal apparatus and personnel for vehicular traffic. Any person finding it necessary to clear a sidewalk or gutter, after said street has been opened for vehicular traffic, shall bank and pile the snow from the sidewalk within three feet inside the curb.

§ 296-3. Ice removal. (Keep sidewalks free of ice)
No owner, occupant or person having charge of any building or vacant lot shall permit any ice to remain upon any sidewalk so as to impede pedestrian traffic.

§ 296-4. Injury to pavement; spreading of ashes, sawdust or sand. (DO NOT destruct pavement, use melting agents or agents to prevent slipping)
In case any snow or ice shall be so hardened or in such condition that it cannot be removed without injury to the pavement, the owner, occupant or person having charge of the building or lot shall cause ashes, sawdust or sand to be spread over same.

§ 296-6. Removal by city; costs to become lien.
In addition to the penalties provided in Chapter 1, General Provisions, § 1-25, for failure to comply with this article, the snow or ice may be removed by and under the direction of the Director of the Department of Public Works, and the expense of removal shall be charged against the owner of the premises, to be a first and paramount lien thereupon, and be collected in the same manner and as a part of the current tax bill chargeable against the property.

Wait you own 100 ft of driveway and don't own a shovel, rock salt, or a snow blower?

Also does anyone have any idea when the side streets will be plowed? I am supposed to go to work tomorrow but we still have at least a foot on the street so I'm doubtful that'll happen. I called the incinerator authority today & they said they'd get to it today - didn't happen.
