Is it true Jersey City to NYC fare and vice verse, is a flat $34 plus tolls?

Took a NYC yellow cab to my Tribeca office this morning. When I questioned the fare, driver whipped out a book stating the above fair. I'm in Hamilton Park, so just around the corner from Holland Tunnel.

How do yellow cabs work? I doubt i will ever take one from JC to NYC again, but I may have to do the reverse.

Is it even legal for a NYC yellow cab to pick up a fare in JC?

As I'm sure you can see from other posts, when going the reverse direction, it's pretty much a negotiation and depends on your willingness/ability to haggle (possibly with multiple cabbies).

I take the bus to the airport wherever possible.
http://www.njtransit.com/sf/sf_servlet.srv?hdnPageAction=BusTo

The only traffic I've encountered is on Broad Street in Newark, but that was rush-hour traffic as would be encountered anywhere. I think the bus stops at each terminal.

Of course you can get the PATH or NJ Transit #1 bus to Newark. $1.50
http://www.njtransit.com/pdf/bus/T0001.pdf

The #62 bus from Newark Penn to the Newark Liberty Airport is $1.50.
http://www.njtransit.com/pdf/bus/T0062.pdf

Alternatively, the GO BUS #28 runs from Newark to the airport, but not from Penn. $1.50
http://www.njtransit.com/pdf/bus/T0028.pdf

Or... you can connect to the airport from NJ Transit rail.

Now, I see this... Yesterday around 10pm i had an emergency at home and was charged $55. There was some traffic in the tunnel, but that's the price he offered before leaving. I didn't know any better.

Never pay more than $40 to get from Manhattan to JC. Negotiate it before you get in the cab (start by offering $30), and as someone said before, be willing to say no and move on to the next guy who comes along. Also, don't tip on the $40. For that much cash to drive me 2 or 3 miles, consider the tip included.

From Chelsea or below: I usually negotiate double fare. You have to be willing to get out of cabs who don't want to negotiate that way - but usually within a few I find someone who wants the deal. Then you can get it down to <$30. From uptown: If you try to ask for a flat fare from NYC they often start at $45+toll (even in Tribeca!!!) I think negotiating on the flat rate is really only a good idea when you are way up town. I once did that from 92 & 10th ave and the guy accidentally left the meter on. Meter from 92nd street to paulus hook was $24, making the 35 I negotiated down to a good deal, but in general if you start out by trying the flat fare the cabbie is going to try to anchor the negotiation at a price that is too high.

100% untrue. NYC taxis must accept credit/debit cards for all fares. It doesn't matter if its flat fare, out of state or anything else. If they say they can't accept it, threaten to take their medallion number and call 311 - they will magically be able to accept credit cards. Cabbies like to say they can't since they get more money from the cash, but it's untrue.

One late Saturday night we took the PATH to Hoboken and missed the last light rail train. We then shared a cab to the Heights for $10.00. From there we took a Champion Taxi (which is located on Paterson Plank Rd. and Central Ave.) home. In our drunken state we thought it was pretty clever.

It sounds like a black car or limo may be cheaper. Try one of the car services. I used Delancey Car Service once in 2006 from St Vincent's Hospital to Paulus Hook. It was $35.

they'll do it, but with tip it will probably be around $60...it is as previously mentioned around $45-$50 from downtown just to cross the river.

You usually just have to pay them a flat fee. Haven't seen the double meter plus toll lately. I think I may actually prefer that method though. Depends where you are coming from in NYC. If it's downtown 45 bucks is about what I've paid.

I'm taking my elderly mother into the villlage tonight for a party. I will need to get a cab back into downtown JC at about 11:00 p.m. I haven't taken a cab back from the city in a long time. Are most cabbies still willing to drive back into JC, and do they still do double the meter plus the toll?

They can charge whatever they want, but $30-$40 is about right. Legally nyc taxis do not have to take you to NJ, though they do have to take you anywhere on Long Island, go figure.
Journal sq to newark airport is $25 with Budget limo

I've been using King Limousine for years. They've always been right on time, reliable. It's $28 to EWR.

Good to know. I never paid less than 35 when i lived in Hoboken, I would imagine Hamilton park being about the same.

While we're on the topic. Can someone recommend a cheap reliable taxi service? And how much would it cost to get to Newark Liberty Intl?

Good to know that it's a similar price. I guess the toll makes the difference, seeing that the Brooklyn Bridges have no tolls.

I've actually seen a LOT of NYC cabs in JC lately on the weekends...more than I used to.

Anybody know what a taxi costs to places in Brooklyn and Queens that are equally as close as Downtown JC is to Manhattan?

What time of day?

I'd guess $50 if during rush hour ... probably $40 late at night.

It depends. You should try to negotiate with them. I've paid ~$40 at around midnight (no traffic). If it's during a higher traffic period, I've had quotes of $70 and I've even had them refuse. I don't think I've ever paid less than $40.
