Agreed. This would be an interesting quiz topic for city cops/officials. What will happen in the spring when the flowers bloom? What if one day I walk in the garden & all of the flowers are gone? (but the plants still remain rooted only so that the flower thief can steal the flowers again) It will be sad.

From now, I'll always have my cell with me & I'll definitely ask the flower thieves to stop picking flowers or smile for my phone camera/video.

Oh come on, there's no law that prevents people from stealing these flowers? Does this mean I can steal the park benches that I like so much and take them home?

No that would be deemed as theft (park benches) of city fitting and fixtures and you would be convicted if caught - fine or imprisonment.

As for flowers it would be a grey area, however if the whole plant (roots and all) went, then that too would be theft I think.

It is disappointing that someone would snip off the flowers and voluntary compliance via posted signs could be the only deterrent.

I find this an interesting topic that would make for a great quiz for cops or city enforcement officials.

What about a sign on the bulletin / community board and a couple in the garden bed ?

Hello,

I saw a flower thief today in Van Vorst Park next to the front of the dog run today (November 11th 2014) between 9.45 am & 9.55 am.

Description: Old white man wearing a cap & a large cloth/plastic bag. Not sure about exact height but he was between 5'6 & 5'8. Will recognize this person again if I see him. At first I thought he was a new park volunteer, then I thought he was a homeless man from the cookies & crepe area or the painter who paints in VVP sometimes. If either of them are reading this right now & aren't the flower thief, please accept my apologies for comparing the thieve's physical description to yours. I don't mean to insult or defame you.

I was in the area next to the gazebo where the park divides into the dog run & the restricted lawn area when I saw him lingering next to the flowers, smelling them & trying to reach out for specific ones. At first I thought he could be a park volunteer but then we saw & stared at each other non stop for a good 5 mins till he left the park. I didn't have a clear realization or confirmation that he was a flower thief but I don't know why or what felt extremely weird/fishy to me.

Went in the dog run to play w my dog. Heard some sounds from the beautiful area behind the dog run. Saw a lot of the plants & flowers are moving??? Then the thief came out of that area & left VVP with a bag that was POURING of flowers (roses & others) & plant stems/branches.

Found a park volunteer & let him know about this. I don't know what else I should do other post it on jclist or directly confront the person (I feel hesitant to the latter because I usually don't like confrontations plus I feel I can't make my point when I'm trying to talk to the person) Maybe I should have just said something short like flower picking is banned in the park instead of staring for 5 mins -_-

Thank you for reading.

G

Any word? I saw a 60+ year old black man (he looked to be homeless) pushing a shopping cart down Roosevelt full of hanging baskets, small potted plants and larger shrubs and plants with no pots. He was trying to sell them to people on the streets. This struck me as odd and i thought of this thread. I mean roots dangling and dirt falling off... didn't look like they came that way. I reported it to the cops.

Hopefully that was your guy.

Having a price on his head seems to have abated the thievery for now. Thanks to all who are keeping a look-out for this person.

The worst outcome of this would be for whoever is doing the gardening there to become discouraged and stop. Too often in Jersey City, the lowest common denominator prevents us from having nice things (e.g., public trash cans).

I'm told it's a cute little old lady who steals the annuals from our planters every year, she particularly likes daisies. I'd happily give her the $3 to buy her own rather than uproot ours. Or I'd happily give her kick in the shins.

But the park case sounds like someone making a buck on it. Years ago in Manhattan you had to chain your potted trees or someone would make off with them to sell. Some people have an attitude that if they can possibly steal it, it rightfully belongs to them.

any chance they can put cameras in the park? It would help on multiple fronts as I think the late night antics are less than noble...

If you are not aware of the fact, the 19 gardens of Van Vorst Park are paid for, planted, and maintained by volunteers. Because of the time, effort, and love put into trying to create a special place for the community, it is particularly offensive to have someone repeatedly steal 25 roses at a time, cut off special varieties of lilies, and last night, the first dahlias to bloom (we even have signs next the these plants asking people not to pick the flowers and the law against doing so).

I will pay $500 to the person who is able to identify this person (he uses a tool to cut them). Take a picture or video and call me at 201 433-6553 during the day; I can?t tell you how much I want to meet this thief.
