Agreed. If this were only the election for Mayor and Council the bums would be tossed out.

Recycled paper is actually more expensive then standard paper:

I don't know if Councilman Fulop has a public position on the teacher's contract. The candidates he's endorsed have differing positions, a reminder that that's just one of many important issues which the School Board confronts.

This is not a quote from the candidate but an interpretation by a poster. I wish there was some way to confirm the position independently...

Please don't forget to vote in person tomorrow !! If you voted via absentee ballot, you might retrieve your vote later at no extra cost but the precise location at the bottom of the Hudson river will only be communicated past the expiration statute.

Actually, "Horse" (straight from the mouth? )as long as you vote for Carol Lester and Sterling Waterman I don't care if you vote for Angel. However, posted below is part of your answer regarding Angel:

Quote:
RE: Mr. Valentin voting to "lay off teachers" because he voted for raises.

Please understand that the layoffs are actually what most of the public wants.

No mandated position will be laid off. For example, the federal IDEA law requires that there be no more than 8 students in an inclusion classroom. If there are 9 children, there will still be 2 inclusion teachers next year. That is a mandated position. The positions that will be cut are those "extra" positions that most people decry at public forums and on websites like this, those "fluffy" positions that do not directly service children, (like many of those at Central Office). Those teachers, because of seniority, will return to schools and go back to being classroom teachers. Yes, some of the new classroom teachers will be "bumped" out and laid off. If teachers received no raises, there would be 2 options: a) lay no one off and leave everyone in the positions they are in, including those fluff ones or 2) cut those fluff positions and have a whole bunch of extra people running around with nothing do to. Couldn't even send them all back to "new" classrooms, because where would you physically house those classrooms, and where would the money for the desks, bookshelves, curriculuar supplies, etc; come from?

Mr. Valentin did not vote to cut 373 teachers. Mr. Valentin is cutting extraneous positions and trying to keep JC's budget in check by making sure that the teachers we are paying are actually teaching kids, not hanging out at Central Office.

It seems that Mr. Valentin has a much better "sense"
of fiscal managment than either McCann or Dehere.

I was just shown your Website so I appologize for this last minute response. My name is Gerald Lyons and I am running for the Jersey City Board of Education. I am not backed by any political party or organization so I am listed as an Independent. I teach at County Prep High School on Montgomery Street. This is my 23rd year with the district. I have five teaching certifications (vocational, academic, online, Supervisor of Instruction and Media Specialist), a master's and an additional 100 credits. I have won Teacher of the Year for my district twice and was honored by the Jersey Journal as an Everyday Hero in Education in 2006. I am a devoted teacher who still enjoys my job. I would like to bring my years of experience and my education to the Board of Ed. I think it is important to have someone who is in the classroom present when the Board is discussing policies that affect the students of Jersey City. Please check out my Facebook group page, Gerald Lyons for the Jersey City Board of Ed, if you would like more information. I thank you for your time and join with many of the people who have posted to this site in urging you to vote tomorrow. Please consider adding a teacher to the Board. Thank you for your time. Gerald Lyons

Are we talking about the same Dehere? He did improve his talk on Thursday but I was at PS#16 (Paulus Hook) the prior Tuesday where Dehere was awful, shouting out bromides as solutions to real problems particularly financial and promising that when McCann gets re-elected (LOL!)he would make McCann the head of finances and McCann said he'd make Dehere the President of school board.

No one seriously considers Dehere coherent to vote him back onto the school board. He won the 1st time cause he was a great basketball player at Seton Hall but did nothing since he's been on school board, imo. However you can see his and McCann's flyers illegally slapped up on fences in the Heights and at 5 Corners in JC.

Read the Jersey City Independent for what various candidates have said in their interviews if elected to school board.

Mia, your endorsement is a major disappointment. I'm going to hit the "unsubscribe" button for your mailing list. I'm not going to endorse candidates on JCLIST but my friends know that I think that Carol Lester and Sterling Waterman are strong candidates. There are other good choices as well, such as Gerald Lyons, Anthony Sharperson, and June Mulqueen.- people with integrity that can be trusted to act in the best interest of our children, and JC taxpayers.

By orchestrating the defeat of the contract, the teachers, under recently passed state law, will pay a measly 1.5% or on average $750 PER YEAR for their insurance but we save $4 million in health insurance costs! Listen I don't care for his personality either but these economic times demand tough people who can read a budget and financials.....

My second choice is Sterling Waterman (3A) who regularly attends Board of Ed meetings so he has some idea what's going on, unlike the other candidates. My only reservation is that now that he's supported by the Teachers' Union he is anti- school choice. The charter schools on average get about 67% of the funding we spend on regular (non-special ed) students. Many are doing a fine job.

As for third choice.... I'm torn....

Tomorrow is a crucial election and we have a chance to chart a new course for Jersey City. As Councilman, I have worked week after week to fight the political establishment and move Jersey City forward, but tomorrow is the biggest opportunity we have had in a long time. The best way to improve Jersey City is by replacing decision-makers who care little about the tax payers with those who do care. Tomorrow is that chance.

Please remember to vote tomorrow as I need your help. Please support Carol Lester, Sterling Waterman and Angel Valentin to be elected on to the school board. Vote for 3A, 5A, and 8A ? Sterling, Carol, and Angel for the Board of Education.

The polls are open 2-9pm tomorrow and if you have any questions please respond to this email.

Sincerely

Steve

Sure he does, because nobody - NOBODY - not the other candidates, other board members, the "media" as Mia likes to fashion herself, ever questions him.

Mia says: "It's been repeatedly mentioned that over 1,100 teachers have no classroom assignments". Yes, it's been said repeatedly by McCann. Does anyone ever stop, just for a second to think what that would mean? 1,100 teachers - what is that, a half of all teachers? A third? For reference, at any point in time, the NYC public schools - a district more than 30 times the size of ours - has 600 to 700 unassigned teachers in its "rubber room" as reported last week on WNYC.

Similar with the pulled-out-of-his-hat "373 teachers will be laid off" if the contract is ratified. Please, take 30 seconds to think about how does one arrive at such precision, what would be involved, whether or not individual teachers are already identified for layoff (which would be necessary to speak with such precision) and you quickly realize that, yet again, the man is lying.

You've always struck me as better than this, Mia. How do you buy into a lieing convict with a 30 year history of contorting his rhetoric to fit the prevailing wind? I know, I know - I wasn't here way back when and don't have all the backstory. You know what, I'm becoming convinced that is a good thing. The people who aren't skewed by the warped events of the past here probably can better see things for what they are in many cases.

Well T-Bird, I WAS HERE when McCann was Mayor, and I do "have all the backstory" and I am not "skewed by the warped events of the past" and yet I too agree with you and others here that McCann is not what we need on the school board. He is a crook, he only joined the school board to control where the monies go as we come out of Abbot control (as Willie Sutton, famous bank robber was asked:

"why do you rob banks?" Why did I rob banks? Because I enjoyed it. I loved it. I was more alive when I was inside a bank, robbing it, than at any other time in my life. "Go where the money is...and go there often"

McCann intimidated voters then as now and is an example of our failed past and should not be part of our future.

I think anyone endorsing Gerald McCann should be suspect. How could you recommend a multiple offender criminal as a leadership position for a school board? The general claim is that he will protect us from higher taxes. This man was convicted of tax fraud! Hello! The fact that anyone that has endorsed him including Mia Scanga, Terry DeHure, and Hiral Patel is bad. THE WORST IS THAT JERSEY CITY POLICE OFFICER SEAN CONNERS HAS ENDORSED HIM IN THIS LETTER:

The Hudson Reporter

How can a police officer recommend someone to a school board who was sentenced to over two years in prison for fraud. In 1995 he was convicted of drunk driving. Judge John C. Lifland of Federal District Court ruled that Mr. McCann had also violated the terms of his supervised release program by drinking excessively. He publicly threatened the prosecutor in court. These are not secrets but all part of public record . . . any endorsor of this candidate either has been promised something or is delusional.

What suprises, and distresses, me most Mia, is that you claim to be a respected journalist. Respected journalists fact check their information. You, however, are quoting information, facts & figures, that have been reported by Gerry McCann...and not any other legitimate source. Has anyone, besides McCann, mentioned that 373 number? In reality, that does not take into account retirements, which in some years have been close to 200. Has anyone besides McCann mentioned the 4% raise...because in reality, that's across the board. Not every teacher was getting a 4% raise every year. Has anyone besides McCann said teachers are not taking a pay freeze? Because in reality,we've been in a pay freeze since September and will continue to be so indefinitely since WE HAVE NO CONTRACT.

You claim that Waterman & Lester are suspect simply because they earn the support of teachers, or of the JCEA. I see no "endorsement" on the JCEA website..they don't seem to be endorsing anyone officially. Also, you're as bad as the rest if you're willing to eliminate a candidate simply because they share a view opposite of yours. Do you work in education? Do you have an educational administrative license? Because you claim cutting JC's administration won't be enough to close the budget cap, yet Carol Lester (who headed a charter school), Gerald Lyons and June Mulqueen (who work in a school), Angel Valentin (who is an incumbent and has looked at board figures for 3 years not) all say that it will. I guess you know more than all of them.

Stop pretending you are a respected journalist..you are a political activist fighting for the candidates and platforms you believe in. There's nothing wrong with that, but call it like it is. Journalists don't follow a party line...they report FACTS, not opinions.

Thank you Tranzplant.

Does Jersey City really deserve a Board of Ed that will do the least harm? Maybe we do, if that's all we ask of it. But it hasn't been enough to keep it out of this deep, dark hole that the school system has found itself. A hole deep enough the State of New Jersey had to step in.
We, as a city, lack the ability to take care of our children. In a sense, we have "lost custody" of our kids.

DWI, felony, conflict of interest, self serving, disgraceful public defecation and so on and so on. I feel like I'm describing an abusive parent or a youth at risk.

I don't want the children of Jersey City to have those qualities set before them as a role model. I don't want to provide authority over our tax dollars, let alone our access to children to person with such history. Many of these kids can't escape such abusive dysfunction in their own homes.
Shame on us if we don't say enough is enough.

It is not enough for me to find someone to serve on the Jersey City Board of Education who will do least harm. If it was enough for me, Gerry McCann would certainly not be that candidate.

I would like to know how Gerry McCann was given the right to run and hold public office.
Like it or not, conviction of felony means one's life is changed forever.

Mia,

Gerald McCann is a CONVICTED FELON THIEF and you endorse him claiming that he is somehow going to save taxpayer's money!?! How is a thief THE GUY who is going to get us out of our financial mess?

He also was convicted of Drunk Driving in 1995 (New York Times April 15 1997)

Judge John C. Lifland of Federal District Court ruled that Mr. McCann had also violated the terms of his supervised release program by drinking excessively.(New York Times April 15 1997)

The man is a REPEAT CRIMINAL and this is the guy you want to turn to because of our tough economic times?

This is the kind of role model you want for the children in Jersey City? You want to send the message to them: "Hey kids you can commit serious crimes and then become an important leader in our city just because you hate your teachers".

Mia you just lost any credibility as far as I am concerned I am going to go take myself off the Mia Scanga email list. The most telling thing in your endorsement is that it is his personality you have a problem with and not his multiple serious criminal convictions.

I have to get out of this town.

I don't know too much about McCann other than what was said on this board, so I had a negative opinion of him. But the other day I watched that clip and he seemed most aware of whats going on there.
