Jersey City felon Ricardo Vonce is heading back to prison after aggravated assault conviction
After a 26-minute conviction Wednesday, Ricardo Vonce, 30, of Jersey City, is on his way back to jail for his second assault on a police officer.

Vonce already served time from 2001-2003 for aggravated assault on an officer and drug charges, according to state corrections records.

On May 8, 2009, officers responded to complaints about a group of people drinking alcohol outside of a Wayne Street residence. When cops arrived, Vonce lowered his shoulder and tried to charge through an officer who restrained him,Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Leo Hurley said yesterday.

Vonce admitted he ran because there was a warrant out for his arrest. He now faces up to five years in prison when he sentenced on May 28.

There are consequences for every action. You shove a cop, you get in trouble. You commit a crime when you are on PROBATION, you are sent back to jail. Why do people like you make excuses for criminals? Is it because he is black and you feel "sorry" for him? That is the worst kind of racism, imo.

Poor Guy? He tackled a cop. He has a long rap sheet. He should go away and do the time. Sounds like the streets are safer without him on them.

For trying to get away from a warrant so he wouldn't have to do time, this poor guy is facing an extra possible 5 years. We really need to look at alternatives that are less expensive for taxpayers and less traumatic for transitioning populations.

Jersey City felon Ricardo Vonce is heading back to prison after latest aggravated assault conviction

A Jersey City felon with an long criminal history is on his way back to prison after being convicted yesterday for a second time on the charge of aggravated assault on a police officer, officials said.

"The state intends to ask for every minute of time that a judge can sentence this individual for," said Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Leo Hurley of Ricardo Vonce, 30, of Booraem Avenue, who was convicted yesterday after only 26 minutes of jury deliberation.

The charges stem from a May 8, 2009 incident in which numerous police officers responded to a residence on Wayne Street between Grove and Barrow streets after getting reports of outdoor drug and alcohol use their, Hurley said.

Police found Vonce and three other men on the stoop and as Officer Terrance Doran began questioning them, Vonce gut up and rushed Officer William Costigan Jr., Hurley said.

"Vonce lowered his shoulder and tried to run through Costigan who subdued him after a struggle with the help of Doran," Hurley said, adding that neither officer suffered significant injuries. The prosecutor said Vonce later admitted he ran because there was an unrelated warrant for his arrest.

Testimony at trial lasted about two hours and both officers took the stand.

Vonce was in prison from Jan. 5, 2001 to Jan. 23, 2003 for aggravated assault on a police officer and four convictions for drug possession with intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of school property, in crimes dating back as far as Aug. 20, 1999, according state corrections records.

Vonce, who has also gone by the alias "Corky," faces up to 5 years in prison when sentenced on May 28 by Hudson County Superior Court Judge Fred Theemling in the Hudson County Administration Building in Jersey City.
