Nobody in the City is going to get rich cleaning up abandoned property.
Thus it will not get done unless you are a neighbor ratting chains at City Hall day after day after day after year after year.

Miss,

Offer the owners $1000 or $10,000...pay several thousand to tear the joint down and be content that you property is now two lots wide and worth a lot more.

Or buzz the City every single day until they send someone to tear it down.

I have been dealing with this issue for a while. I live next to a abandoned/vacant row house. Its been like that for 20+ years. The interior is completely guted. There aren't even floors. The exterior is collapsing. Bricks fall off the building and major cracks are visible. I have had the building department come out several times. They take photos and proclaim that it is a danger. I have even had my city council representative involved.

My understanding is the city will put a lien on the house. The owner will have numerous court appearances. The city hopes this will bother the owner to repair or sell. If not, by the end of the process the city will tear down the building and give the owners the bill. The whole process takes 2 years. Sadly I have no idea if the process has actually started or even what the status is.

Doesn't NJ have an Abandoned Property Law? If the neighbors don't repair the property the city can force them to or seize the property to sell to someone that can.

This is a power point link that goes into detail.

policy.rutgers.edu/cupr/cdi/.../Session4-AbandonedProperties.ppt

Has anyone had any experience in this?

Thank you all! I found the owners! Now I have to figure out what to do about this decrepit house. I wonder how much you can buy a house off of someone for who hasn't taken care of it in over 15 years?!

If you're still having trouble, you can get help at the NJ Room of the Main Public Library to determine the Lot #, etc.

Or just call the JC Tax office and they can help you over the phone, as they have in the past for me... after I waited a little while...

I guess you have enough information to work on with all of the above posts.

If you didn't know you can look at the JC website and get the tax information on the address.

JC Tax Collector

Click on the link then it is online tax inquiry..

You can see who owns it and if their taxes are up to date.

Good luck

Agreed. I would have recommended that site as well.

Also helpful for recent data is:

NJ by the Numbers
http://www.nj.com/news/bythenumbers
(Home & Taxes section).

With the JC inquiry system all I do is fill in the "Property Location" box. It only lets you put in 8 characters but at least it will list out all properties with those 8 characters and you can go over them to find the one you want.

Example: I wanted to see 514 Westside Ave...I typed in 514 West and hit submit. 514 Westside ave came up in the list I then clicked on it to get the full information.

You would think they would fix it and give you more characters in the Property Location box. The box is large enough but doesn't take more then 8. GO JC!

If you're referring to the house on 6th Street bet Erie and Jersey, we are the twin house on the other side of it.

We have at least one person a month ring our doorbell asking about it: from deep pocketed developers to every neighbor on the block.

The contractor boarding up their windows this winter, told me it needs to be demolished. We are beginning to have small pieces of it fly into our backyard. Since we have a child we're very concerned.

If its the same house. I have the contact persons digits. PM me and I will forward to you.

I was going to suggest that Miss plonk the address into the old Monmouth Tax DB, but I like that one you have, PBW! Cool!

Call the city clerk or the Mayors hotline. They should be able to direct you. Also, try googling the address.
and this website may help:

I have a house that's been abandoned for 15 years next door to mine.

How can I find who the owner is?

How can I buy it off them?

I heard it belongs to a woman in a nursing home. It needs to be gutted, as I can see windows broken and plants growing out of them, but if I can make them a deal and take it off their plate, to benefit the area and make me a beautiful home in downtown jersey city.

Please Help.
Thanks
M
