xtian,

I think you got a very good deal at $1900 for 800 square feet ans 6th floor (if the square footage is honest.) As the weather warms a bit you will see increased foot traffic on the Waterfront Walkway til midnight and beyond and a stroll to Shoprite or Newport will be PERFECTLY safe.

It is dull if one's idea is of excitement is nonstop truck traffic, cars stereos blasting, and sirens blaring all night. Some of us like quet for sleeping and being in the middle of the Hudson is serenity with killer views that almost nobody on Earth has...if that isn;t LOCATION I don't know what is. If you want excitement it is an 8 minute walk to the PATH train at Ex. Pl. and a few minutes longer to Manhattan.

Say what one will about the Walkway but it is the safest part of town...and that include Paulus Hook, Newark Avenue, Journal Square and the Heights.

Is the 800 square feet a junior 2?

Actually it was a few reviews on that site that prompted me to post the question here. I figured you folks would be a little more unbiased. Thanks for the advice etc...

Eh. I wouldn't put too much stock in that website. It tends to be a giant bitchfest of people who have a bone to pick with their apartment management.

agreed. Every thing is always THE WORST POSSIBLE SITUATION on EARTH with that site.

I don't know if I would say that that area is safe because it is just too desolate., after 8:00 (maybe 10:00 during the summer) it is a ghost town-that whole area of downtown is; if some thing happens there will likely be no other witnesses.

There are definitely people walking around after 8pm in the wintertime. I often come home from work after that and I'm never the only person walking from Exchange Place along the waterfront toward the Pier.

I've come from Newport/Pavonia really late at night and, again, there are always some people around.

That said, I mostly agree with your point---it's a quiet part of town, and especially so at night. I'm not sure I'd wander around by myself, especially around behind the Powerplant or toward ShopRight (although, to be fair, I probably wouldn't wander around by myself in those areas even during the day). But, I've always felt pretty comfortable walking to/from the PATH stations.

Personally it didn't bother me when I left work at 2:00 or 3:00 am and walked to the taxi stand at Grove St. but I don't know your situation. I know I would not be comfortable with my wife walking around alone over
there.

But it is quiet and the views are incredible. If you are comfortable with solitude or don't really go for walks alone at night do it- it is way too easy a commute from there.

I think we got a good deal - 1,900, high floor, 800sqft (if you call the 6th floor high), view of downtown nyc.

Honestly it was the quietest place we looked at by far, and I actually like that there's nothing to do around there. I'd much rather jump on the path train and be in NYC in a few minutes.

Plus, the JSQ/33rd PATH train ride is BRUTAL. I'd rather take the WTC line and walk the 2 miles to work :)

It's closer to Exchange Place, but Pavonia/Newport is only about a 10 minute walk from there.

Also, I can't speak to the construction of the units themselves, but the area is very quiet. Unfortunately, there isn't much within walking distance, but if you have a car, that's not a problem. Frankly (and unlike most people here, I assume), I'd rather live in this part of town than in almost any other part of JC.

One last thing I'll mention---when I was looking for an apartment in JC, I think I ruled out the Pier pretty early on because it seemed more expensive than comparable places nearby. I never actually went inside, so maybe the interiors are nicer or more spacious or something, but I think you can probably find something a little bit cheaper along the waterfront. I think 1 bedrooms in places like the A Condos and Portofino are going for between $1900 and $2100 or so, including parking (subtract maybe $150 if you don't need a parking spot).

It is in a rather dull part of Downtown - but could have nice views and it is safe for baby strollers, I guess. Keep in mind that there is only one train - but it is a good area if you are afraid of city living.

The location is incredible and the views must be magnificent, the surroundings are whisper quiet.
And hey, it's a rental. If you hate it you can move out in 12 months.

What are you paying for what size apartment?

I've heard the walls are quite thin, maintenance is bad, etc...I'm starting to second guess my decision to move here.
Thanks!

We looked at a few apartments there last year and did not like them compared to others in the area for the same money. The views are nice and some units had balconies but the layouts of the 1 bedrooms we saw were small and awkward.
