i'd like to say i'm surprised that JRL tried to make a completely nonsensical swipe at a local politician for this unrelated thread....
OP - i liked Corkscrew better when the "other crew" was running it and had local bands playing there. in the Heights I like Monaghans a lot (225 hutton street near JFK). for weirdness, but old local charm, try Ralph's at 486 Central (just north of Congress)... it's an interesting place.... You can walk over to the elevator and ride down to Hoboken - one and a half blocks from the elevator is DCs bar, which is a good "local" place

There was a time when there were some nice bars in the Heights, Narrowbacks, Western Slope, Shannon's to name a few. I guess you can thank the wonderful councilman up there for the type of element that now lives in sections of the heights.

I like the Corkscrew on Congress St., it's in walking distance from my place. By no means is it 'upscale' but it is a good place to have a few beers and play pool or Buck Hunter. The bartenders are friendly and there is a good local vibe there.

Try Renato's Italian Restaurant on Cambrige Ave. in the Heights. It's actually in the back of Pizza Masters on Central Ave. next to the Police Station. The prices are very reasonable and the veal francese is terrific. It gets crowded on a Friday night, they do have a parking lot as well. You'll usually run into a familar face. Also it's Italian owned.

Unfortunately, not much at all...
However, the Lincoln Inn on Lincoln Street has been around for years. It has great cocktails served in shakers. So if you order a Manhattan for instance, they give it to you with the shaker so you pour yourself a second drink. It feels very old world... The food isn't bad either (the place just needs a major redecoration, but that's also part of the charm - kind of...).

Just can't stay away

I've lived in the Heights for over a year now, and strolling and biking around the neighborhood I've seen several old fashioned looking type bars which look pleasant enough - like 'Lincoln Tavern' on Lincoln Street off Central Avenue, and one near Stanford Place and Zabriskie Street (can't recall the name).
As a gay man, my social life pretty much revolves around Manhattan and I'll admit to preferring slick lounges, but it would be nice to have someplace local to take my mom & dad or stop in with friends after a day sightseeing in the nabe or road trip to IKEA. Any suggestions?
