i'm waiting for a return call and if i don't get it, its back to comcast.

+1 I fell for the marketing gimmick too. I've noticed no discernable improvement, but I have noticed the following negative features:

1) Comcast has better phone service (ability to check VM online, no need to dial "1")
2) Comcast has more intuitive guide navigation
3) Verizon internet service seems to blip more than comcast

I suppose I will wait 6 months to change back

from Engadget..
"You might think that if only Verizon's FiOS service was available in your area, then life would be nearly perfect. And although FiOS offers some of the fatest internet in the US as well as some of the highest quality HD and a fantastic selection, it isn't all rosy over there. In fact the service has been riddled with billing issues since its launch in 2005 and in order to take advantage of some of the great promotional offers, you're forced to sign a two year contract. Up until January 16th 2010, that ETF has been $179, and according to DSL Reports on the 17th, that fee is set to go up to $360. That's not it though, as Verizon is expected to raise the price of services another $10 or $20 a month. You can of course avoid this by not signing a contract and going month to month, but of course this'll only work out saving you money if you end up canceling, and really if you had fiber to your home do you really think you'd cancel? Us either. Regardless, if you were thinking of switching to FiOS or taking advantage of a new promotion, we wouldn't waste any time getting it before the terms change next week. And as always be sure to read the fine print before signing anything."

Anybody else notice the Verizon trucks on Warren St. recently? Please say they are installing FIOS! Can't stand Crapcast.

Hey Vigilante,

That was a smart move on your part. I also made the move to HDTV recently. As was the case with you, we also picked up a 46" HDTV in December, and the next logical step was to move from Digital cable to HD cable. I gotta say that watching TV on HD is truly unbelievable. The quality and clarity of the signal lives up to the hype. I would never go back!

In any case, using an HDMI cable does make a huge difference.

Newest issue of Consumer Reports rates the cable/phone/internet carriers. Verizon Fios is ranked 2nd. behind a company called WOW. Comcast is ranked around 14th. or 15th. My Comcast got much better once my HDMI cable arrived the other day. I would switch but right now I am paying minimal for Comcast HD because I threatened them with the "I'm gonna switch" line.

Just ordered FIOS for the new construction at 5th & Brunswick based on recommendations in this thread. Had planned on getting Comcast, thankfully FIOS was available in the area. Thanks all!

Vigilante,
On picture quality, I have found that there is no contest between FIOS and Comcast. I brought home a 32" Toshiba a couple years ago, hooked up Comcast HD, and it was awful. Switched to FIOS, and not only did all channels (SD and HD) look worlds better, but there was a much larger selection of HD channels (I don't know if this is still the case).
That being said, Verizon's billing SUCKS! You must watch your bill like a hawk because they are constantly trying to nickel and dime you to death. If the picture quality wasn't so fantastic, I probably would have dumped them due to the poor billing.
My 2 cents..

Got a 46" Samsung HDTV for Christmas. Switched from Comcast digital to Comcast HD and the picture just isn't up to snuff. Non-HD channels are even worse than with the simple digital hook-up. The HD channels have lots of "blockiness" on the image. Has anyone had this problem with Comcast HD and did Fios improve it? Thanks!

You have made me so happy. I promise that this will be a 4 hour window that you will never forget. When I whip out the cable and insert it for you, your eyes will open wide and you will see things like never before. And you will also understand why we say, "Fios - This Is Big."

I will confirm 24 hours prior.

Yours always,

Fios.

Oh Fios,

I've heard it all before. But yet, somehow it feels oh-so-right.

I know you have said before you are over Rachel Uchitel, Jaimee Grubbs, Kalika Moquin, Mindy Lawton and Jamie Jungers....and that porn girl, I mean Scores girl, I mean porn and Scores girl. But sometimes it's hard to accept that's true. I know Chapter Four of "He's just not that in to you" tells me your sexy talk...when it comes fast and late, is the result of not being able to get anyone else on the phone....but I don't know. This time it seems....different. This time the phone call was crisp and clearer and all fiber to fiber optic with that sexy discount. This time you delivered your words at the speed of light all fast ready to download and upload with crystal clear picture...

I'll sign up FIOS, bring on your triple play and I'll play it. ALL. NIGHT. LONG.

P.S. You had me at Italian butter.

Even though the other people will be good dancers, we will be the best. When you bump, I will bump. When you grind, I will grind. We will move together like twins who happen to like to freak.

When you have had your fill of dancing, I will take you by the hand and lead you to the most romantic corner of the entire club and sit you down on one of the plush, red-velvet couches. While you rest, Fios will go the bar and purchase a drink for you. Before I bring it back to you, I will taste it, demanding finer gin should it fall short of my expectations for you. Also, I will ask for less ice so that your gin and tonic is not diluted.

While you sip your drink, I will stroke your hair and tell you such complimentary things as "You are like a fine statue carved out of brown marble," and "Your eyes are like pools of creamy Italian butter," and "You have beautiful shoes." You will know that I mean these things because they come from the heart, and the heart is always true.

At this point, we will go back to my place, where I will prepare a dinner specially suited for one as lovely as you. While I am cooking the meal, we will talk about your life, your hopes, and your dreams. At this point, I will unthaw a deluxe bag of jumbo shrimp for you to sample as the appetizer.

There will also be cocktail sauce.

Finally, my dinner of lobster, shipped to me that morning in only the coldest of ice from the finest lobster region in all of Maine, will be completed and placed on the table. Along with the lobster will not only be melted butter, but also side dishes. Some of them will be corn, peas, and baked potato.

When the meal is over, we will have dessert and coffee.

At this point, you will be so turned on by this night of dancing and lobster that you will be dying to sex me wild. But instead of taking you to my bedroom to knock boots, I will build your desire even more. I will do this by leading you to my living room, where I will light a fire and hand-feed you the finest strawberries available. If you do not enjoy strawberries, I will have other types of berries at my disposal that can be fed to you in a sexy manner. Between bites, I will offer you sips of champagne in a glass made specifically to maximize your champagne-drinking pleasure.

As much as you want to, you will no longer be able to control your desire. Neither will I. This is when I will lead you to my polar-bear-skin rug so we can do it all night long. You will cry for more, and you shall receive it. I will hit it until you can take no more. Then, when you are 100 percent satisfied, I will stop. After that, I will kiss your belly button and tell you how beautiful you are until you fall asleep in my arms.

Damn.

Your man,

Fios

Okay, okay, like a booty call you phone me after the fact willing to fix it. You give me your direct number. You promise me the world. Thank you. I feel heard. Oprah says feeling heard is all we ever need. But I still cannot enter in to this relationship. It's not healthy for me to say yes to your booty call after standing me up twice. It brings up self esteem issues.

I'll wait, dear FIOS, I'll wait for you. And when you mature, learn good communication, look inside to explore what's wrong with your own dysfunction, I may just say yes to this commitment. But I'm hurt, I'm scarred and no sweet talking after the fact will make up for that. Only time. Until then, I say good bye to you while I wait for my comcast to re-load and my Direct TV to fire up. Sigh.

Dear FIOS,

This is an invoice for my time.

I'd like to bill you the following amount: $660.45
-That includes two days worth of wages I lost taking time off work and you stood me up
-That includes the 4 hours and 33 minutes I wasted on hold with you (it was actually more if you include e-mails, phone calls and bouts of crying)
-That is for the first day you promised FIOS installation and didn't show. A day I was called in to work but I said no because, "Fios is coming! Fios is coming!"
-That is for the second day (weeks later) you promised AGAIN FIOS would come and do an installation and when I called the night before to double check...Because fool me once...but fool me twice...no sir! And after 63 minutes I am told they made an error and are not coming but that they'll override the mistake and still come and then I have to call this morning and another 47 minutes learn they are NOT coming. (Keep up dear FIOS management, keep up with me here!). And of course, like a fool, I said no to work AGAIN because this time, for sure, positively, "Fios is coming! Fios is coming!" Why? Why?

I appreciate you all are getting paid by the hour to keep me on hold while you work through the dysfunction between departments, the miscommunication, the lack of double checking things, the ineptness I witnessed, but you see, I DO NOT. I understand Mark probably gets commission or an employee of the month plaque for the amount of deals he closes. But I DO NOT. I can see how easy it is to move on to the next sale, but I cannot. I am the one writing those e-mails and making those calls pleading for assistance.

I'll happily provide you with my home address so you can mail me a check for the time I have wasted hoping for these incredible services! Amazing technology! Oh wait, you DO have my address. In fact, I've repeated my address to you about three dozen times to about two dozen people while explaining the same issues over and over and over and over again. All I wanted was you to do the following, a) come to my home, b) install c) do it when you say you will. If that is so difficult to do right, what am I in for once the service is installed?

I will remain with your competitor until FIOS's customer service and internal communications catches up with the technology. I for one am not willing to save bucket loads of money (insert a whimper and a cry from me here) so I can become an "on hold" doormat for your company. So I can eagerly wait by the window hoping your installers come for two days.

Come to think of it, that $660.45 doesn't add up to the wages lost and time spent. But it's a start. So fork it over.

I won't charge you for the amount of sleep I'll lose thinking about all the naughty things I'd like to do to whoever is the ultimate power over there that decided this type of behavior is acceptable in a large company. That, my dear FIOS, you get for free.

Still no FIOS available on Wayne Street (odd numbered buildings near Barrow) even though the fiber has been hanging on the poles in front since the spring.

br6dr: thank you.

Right now all three is less than just the internet and tv. but if you have verizon wireless its better to not get the phone.

if you are unsure of your address... email me. I've gotten tons of emails from people and sometimes it is available even when the website says its not. I just signed another person up today with that situation.

a lot of you may live in apartment buildings with 8 or more units... sometimes these buildings require special wiring, so even if FiOS IS on your street, you won't be able to get it until your property management company or condo board contacts Verizon. if you need info on who to speak with... email me. markmorin@verizon.net

Not sure i understand why they have a booth in Newport Mall when most folks in Newport and, actually, Hamilton Park, still can't get service...but i would like to mistaken here...

I live in Hamilton Park and have FIOS, and so do many of my neighbors. 6 months ago on 8th between Erie and Jersey FIOS wasn't available, not sure if it is now.

Thanks Mark. I actually worked it out with their support. (Which BTW, is very good.)

Turned out one of the tuners in the DVR lost signal and I just had to reseat the coax and reset. If you press Select twice while the power is off you can get a ton of diagnostic info on the box. Good to know.

Pooper,
I had a similar issue a few months ago - hd was all messed up on a few channels surrounding TLC, History, Sience channel.... my box ONT needed to be reset by tech support... took about 10 minutes on the phone and no problems since.

Mark

I think it's just much cheaper if you do sign the contract. Check at the website though.

Service has been great except lately TLC, History and a couple other HD channels are out. SD is fine. Anyone else experiencing this?

Is it necessary to sign up for a contract when installing FIOS. Also, is HowardTV available?

Mark,
Any clue as to when FIOS will be installed in Port Liberte?
