Gargiulo's tastes pretty good, but it is a bit too soggy and greasy to make it a regular part of our rotation. John's, Buon Appetito, and Lisbon get our votes. Also, Gargiulo's is closed on weekends. It pisses me off when local businesses close on weekends. They are basically just a corporate cafeteria for downtown businesses when they do this.

I am going to put in my vote for Gino's in the Heights. Their regular pie is just servicable, but they have a pie called the Grandma which is outstanding. It is pretty much what my Sicilian grandma used to make when I was a kid. Square, but not thick crusted, with a sweet, garlic-y sauce and not too much cheese. I highly recommend it!

Just tried Lisbon Pizza the other day and it was actually really good (and cheap). I'm a fan of carmine's too... And although I love Prestos Italian food, i wasn't that impressed with their pizza (pick-up/carry out only).

I'm new to the area so havent tried too many places. I did try Helen's however and would not recommend. The dough reminded me of domino's. I thought Stella's on Grove and Buen Appetito (sp?) was better.

Carmines is good. Very convenient. More convenient than good, although I wish they stayed open a little later.

The chicken and spinach pizza is the best I have ever had. Hands down. Give it a shot.

Carmine's is excellent. It's the closest to New York style pizza around here. Delenio is great for the super thin crust type. Pete @ Delenio makes a great calzone too.

article in the ledger today about pizza, and the writer is eating at Carmine's Pizza Factory. I've seen it, but never went in. Thoughts?

My vote is for Delenio
357 7th St.

Not really sure how to categorize their pizza, but the quality of the ingredients/toppings is top notch and it isn't greasy.

I found Gargiulo's to be on the small side (in terms of slice size), a little thick and heavy. I personally like a very thin crispy type of pizza. My fave so far is Paulus Hook Brick Oven Pizza (as previous mentioned in other people's responses). House slices, which are Margherita, are huge and extra thin.

And I recently had their wings and chicken parm-- both very good!

Don't understand the confusion. John's in NYC is my favorite just like I said in the other thread. This one is talking about the best pizza in Jersey City and for me that's Garguilo's on Greene St. Still don't understand how John's in NYC can be so different from the one in J.C. but it is. Plus sometimes its nice being able to grab a quick slice which John's doesn't offer.

Which is it Mike? In the other thread you said "John's in NYC is actually my favorite." So, Gargiulo is the best but you like John's more?

I second the rave review of the new place on Morris. I went there last night and got two plain slices (fresh mozz, good sauce and basil) and a roasted portabello salad. I was very very impressed! Not the best pizza I've had in my life, but it was worlds above the basic corner pizza joint I used to have in my old manhattan neighborhood. I'm very please to have this new addition nearby!

The salads look great as do the entrees - they have eggplant parm, pastas, salads, etc in large portions to take home.

I asked about the owner and they said it's owned by the same people as the wine shop next door. Very smart idea - I hope they do well!

It looks to be the same as the wine store there on the corner of Washington and Morris, Liberty Wine and Deli. Looks like he owns that whole corner there (Mr. Lee is his name, I think?) It's definitely connected because when I went to grab some beer you could see right into the pizza shop, though you can't go through that way.

But again, seriously, the pizza was amazing, and they sell by the slice.

I really love Rizzo's on Central Ave. I had a slice there this week for the first time and will honestly say it ranked up there with Napolitan pies. Plus they guy was spinning dough when I walked in and no one was around- bonus! Since "best" is so relative I'm going to break it down according to my criteria.

Crust: thin, crisp, firm, browned. Crunchy but not chewy.

Sauce: light, not oozing all over the place- no lumps. Sweet, but not overpowering; balanced in the sense that you don't know it's there.

Cheese: uniform and not overly greasy, well cooked but not stiff

Portions: HUGE! Seriously. 2 bucks for two meals

Plus it's a family joint, and their pasteries are really excellent. Fresh (I mean really frensh) sfogliatelle. :)

I have yet to find truely great pizza in JC, but I tried Singhas pizza in JSQ last week and it was surprisingly good. It was more a deep dish style pizza than NY style for those who are picky, and the toppings were excellent. I can honestly say that it was the best spinach pizza I ever had, but more importantly the pepperoni was good too. As an added bonus, it was cheap and they deliver downtown.

I haven't had HPP since the ownership changed, but I remember that it was good for eat in and lousy if delivered. And the Mexican pizza was actually spicy.

If you are downtown, Hamilton Park Pizza on 7th and Brunswick. I'm sorry for that other reviewer, may have tried them when the cook was out sick, but the food is excellent. The sicilian is light and crispy. I've never had better Chicken Francaise in my life it is sooooo lemony and sauced right. I've had it at Casa Dante and I was very disappointed. They served it with soggy pasta with marinara. Oh no, HPP served al dente pasta sauced in the Francaise sauce that clung to the pasta and just enough extra to drip. And the Penne Vodka is OMG to die for. I'm never ordering Italian anywhere else again, once I got turned on to HPP. (except for subs at Monmouth Deli)

Just tried a new place last night - Sal's Pizza and Pasta on Palisades in the Heights (right across from Fisk Park) and was very pleasantly surprised. Can't necessarily judge the place on one good experience, but very nice crispy thin crust, great tasting sauce and well blended with the cheese. Reminded me of the slices I used to get growing up on Staten Island. Better than all I've tried here including Gino's, Vinnies, and Pizza Master on Central. Worth a shot.

Don't know what has happened to Gino's lately, but their grandma pie has changed, and that's not a good thing.

It's either the sauce (not as sweet as it once was) or they aren't oiling up the pans with enough olive oil, hence making the crust extremely dry.

Does anyone know if the Grandma's truck is still around. Haven't seen it. Not only is that the best pizza in JC, but it's the best pizza I've ever had. When I ate it I couldn't believe it was produced in that truck!

I'm eating a slice from Grandma's truck right now. It is the best. It's outside Plaza 10 on Hudson St., across the street from the north end of the Harborside Light Rail Station.
