Oh yea and dont know whats going on with Pavonia, I drive by every morning and the grass hasnt even been cut... and the pool is not even open

The pool on grand and johnston should be open soon, its not a downtown type of crowd over there if your the type of people that dont like to mix with the white t shirt type of crowd, then I suggest you not have high expectations. But for normal people like me who get along with anyone... it looks really nice so far, they have a pretty big area for the kids with the overhead sprinklers as well. Also there is Lafayette Park which is right next door to the pool.

If you are willing to pay, you can use the Secaucus Municipal Pool.
The rate for Secaucus residents is $170 for individuals 21 and under and $220 for people older, while non-residents 21 and under pay $349 and older individuals pay $430. http://www.nj.com/news/jjournal/secau ... 76152086131710.xml&coll=3

Dug a bit more and it looks like there will be an outdoor pool on Johnston Ave near Grand St. I think it is under construction so not sure when it will open. Hopefully a good set up for JC residents...

Is the Pavonia Pool closed down? I don't see it on this

Here's the teacher's web site. His name is Richard Lear. He's an independent teacher and almost master SCUBA instructor. Before my son started lessons with him, I watched him at the pool teach children and adults and I was really impressed with his ability to reach people at every age. Also a very nice man.

Pership membership is $125 for 6 months for a family for four. $85 for parent and one child. The locker rooms are recently repainted and generally clean. Generally improved over the last year.
My son took private lessons, not the Pership group lessons.

There is no nonsense at the pool. The locker rooms can be a bit dodgy with hot water in the showers somewhat variable.

Why was Pershing Field not to your liking? I take my daughter ice skating there every weekend. While some of the kids roughhouse a little and use some not so great language, everybody even the kids go out of their way to make sure my daughter has fun. Please feel free to be honest, I won't flame you.

I've just started my kids swimming at the YMCA program in Hoboken. (13th & Washington)
The cost is $90 for a 1-year membership, which allows the kid to sign up for any program there throughout the year; and then $80 for the swim class (I think there are about 8-sessions per class) I thought this was kind of pricy given my kids' ages (mom or dad is basically carrying them around the pool at this point), but they offer swim classes for all ages, all throughout the year, at various times, and also have other activities for kids (soccer, basketball, dance, etc), so the convenience and range of activity was a draw; we live in the Heights and have a car so the location is convenientt--would be less so for downtown/JSQ etc.

I've tried a lot of the programs around here. St. Peter's was good, but the water was so cold that my kids couldn't move. Pershing Field was cheap, but not to my liking.
I now take them to the McBurney YMCA on 14th St. in Manhattan. I love it and so do the kids. It's right across the street from the PATH.

NJCU (New Jersey City University) just sent their Fall 2008 course offerings. They include swimming classes for children from ages 6 to 14. My daughter took lessons in the spring and the classes were pretty good.
There are two sessions - September 20 to October 18 for $79.00. The second session is from November 1 to December 6 also for $79.00. They also have swimming classes for adult beginners. For more information, go to www.njcu.edu or call 201-200-3089,

This info is as of Aug. 2008.
The outdoor pool on Pavonia and Westside Ave. is open for the summer and free for JC residents (they didn't ask for any proof). the pool's number: 201.547.4692 it's not a bad pool, has a kiddy pool with a waterfall sculpture. There is one designated swimming lane in the big pool. There are no lounge chairs, you can bring your own chair or lay your towel on the concrete. There are lots of kids! My young daughter cought pink eye from going to the pool, so be careful and washwell after going there!

with all the money coming into JC, I can't believe there is not a really nice pool/club to go to. Before it went public, there was a pool "the cabana club" at the foot of Liberty Park. This is going back many, many, many , many years. The pools mentioned do not cut it - Liberty park should build a club and charge $$, so it stays nice.
