Artist statement ?To become a bamboo and forget that you are one with it while drawing it- this is the Zen of the bamboo.? -posted in Sensei Koho Studio Sumi-e [SU-me-ay] is a Japanese word that means ?ink picture? and describes this specific East Asian style of brush painting. The materials used are very unforgiving as the ink is permanent and cannot be changed once it is put down. The rice paper is very fragile and rips easily especially when using washes. For these reasons, I tend to let the ink and paper do what they want then see what images can be pulled from the darkness. Because of the challenges with materials this painting style becomes very loose and spontaneous; the artist responds to this looser feel of the painting by adapting her own energy. I am painting the inner spirit of the image, not technically how it looks on a plane. The aim of Sumi-e painting is to be very understated - leaving out details such as shadows, lighting and the illusion of perspective. Instead you depend on the beauty of the brushstrokes for strength and character. I started doing Sumi-e as an extension of my watercolor practice. Though I am drawn to the purity and transparency of watercolors, I turned to Sumi-e to eliminate the issue of color and simply work with the beauty of the brushstroke. I fell in love with this painting technique and its elegant simplicity.
