i'd say 20 minutes to union too but it could feasibly take an hour if 22 acts like it normally does. or 21. whatever that hateful highway is called.

I said "round trip", and even Googlemaps puts the Union store at 24 minutes, which is assuming none of the traffic nonsense that is guaranteed on roads like 22, 3, or especially Tonnele.

Have you ever seen me drive?

In any case, the drive is still totally worth it for what you can find at Costco.

At least we got BJs, better then nothing.

Anyone else want to mention some good buys there. I got a good price on the Excedrin 300 ct for $4 (after a $2 instant rebate and $4 bj coupon). If they don't go bad, that's a lifetime supply for $4, as opposed to $11 for 100 at Duane Reade.

Does anyone else hate tying to compare prices for toilet paper and paper towels. My friend says they should sell it by weight. How many pounds of pulp product do you get per dollar.

Debating the merits of BJ's vs Costco is kind of like debating the merits of Shop Rite vs. Whole Foods. Suffice it to say that one is in JC, while the other is not and probably never will be. Costco caters to a higher-income demographic. The food they offer is way better; there's just no comparison - much much better selection of fresh fruits and vegetables. When was the last time BJ's had fresh figs or king crab legs? Costco also has a pretty fantastic book selection. Looking at BJ's book selection, you wonder about the literacy rate of the customer base - but then again, the only BJ's Ive been to is the one in JC and the book selection here may simply be a reflection of the fact that people in JC just don't seem to read (I've never checked out as many books from a library that were brand, spanking never-before-opened new as I have in JC, and some of these were bestsellers!).

My friend first introduced me to the warehouse experience at Costco. Price and selection were better at Costco then BJ and unlike BJs, they give a lot of free samples of food. I like the way Costco packages their apples, in a reusable blister pack and they have a liquor store. I thought of joining there, but BJs is just too convenient. Also, Costco doesn't accept credit cards and closes earlier.

As far as I can figure, they've redlined Hudson County. There's stores in Union, Clifton and Hackensack, even Red Hook Brooklyn and LIC for Gods sake! Maybe they figure if you've got the money to spend, you'll drive the hr round trip.

I get my contacts there too. Speaking of in store concessions, Costco has a fabulous photo lab in each store, BJ's just gave up on photos. I get photo holiday cards each year for less than the cost of just the envelopes elsewhere. Do it online and pick them up the next day.

Most chicken is not butchered in any of those meat depts but instead comes to them pre packed...Occasionally they will open a pre butchered master package and wrap it in their packaging....This is to minimize cross contamination between chicken and other meats....Bottom line is that pricing, quality and brand (Perdue, Tyson) should be a primary consideration. There are different grades of chicken as well but no one probably wants to hear that explanation on this thread.

I don't find chicken breasts to be very cheap at BJs. The only kind I could find were the perdue individually wrapped kind which you have to pay a premium for.

Salmon is 6.99/lb at BJs and that is a good price (i think).

Does the BJs at JC have an optical dept? I haven't seen it...where is it? I have to get new contacts soon...

Love Costco also and in the interest of full disclosure I have family members that work for Costco....Both BJs and Costco have kick ass Optical Depts....My contacts that cost 26 a box at the optician cost about half that at BJs. You can save money on large purchases like a TV. Both companies will usually treat you better when you go to return something if you are at all reasonable because they want you to keep buying that membership every year. Also no one has mentioned the best selling discounted books that both places sell. Both meat depts. are much cleaner than what I consistently saw at the Jersey City Shoprite before I stopped going there.

Lox, Cabot cheddar, maple syrup, hummus ($6 for twice the $5 SR), Ling Ling chicken pot stickers (mmmm), frozen chicken & fish, fresh fish, Hebrew National salami, pistachios, cat litter. Then there's all the random one time or seasonal stuff.

BJ's is alright and minutes away, but still can't touch Costco, a much better run store.

Johnsonville Brats - mmm mmm good! $8.19 for 12.
Pine Nuts, Sun dried tomatos, cottage cheese are my staples. And I admit I've bought some clothes there on occasion. They had cashmere vneck sweaters last fall for $40. They had Ann Klein wife beaters which I use as workout ts and cost something like $15 for three or something like that. I think it doesn't really pay for a single person unless you like to throw big parties. I organize a couple of bbq every year for a social group I organize, so it makes sense to buy in bulk there for special events.

We go weekly and get water for our water cooler there - it's not even $5. Great prices on sunblock too

Pine nuts. WAY cheaper per pound than anywhere else around. Throw them in the freezer so they don't go rancid.

sandman,

The milk has just gone under $2 a gallon and is near half the competion. Half and Half and eggs always saves a bunch and the BJ's 40 ounce of coffee beans is delicious and cheap.
Basic prices are good but not up to sales at Shop-Rite so you've got to pick and choose.

You can save $50 to $100 on any of their TV sets...so it pays to join if only to buy a TV.

Their Michael Angelo's Frozen entrees are delicious and cheap...the Chicken Piccata is better than most restaurants. Eggplant Parmigiana also very good.

and it's great when people think that they can use the bj shopping carts in shop rite only to find out that they can only fit down the extra large checkout. Next time someone asks me to step aside so that their bj's shopping cart can make it to the exit isle i'll say "this is shop rite, not bj's."

I noticed someone asked about BJs on the Shoprite thread, regarding if you can really save money there.

I joined a couple of months ago and I've been keeping a spreadsheet comparing what I paid at BJs vs what I would have paid at Shoprite (by checking online). While some things are priced comparably, like fruit and bread, and sometimes even cheaper at Shoprite when there's a sale, there are some items where it's much cheaper at BJs.

I've found big savings on food staples milk, orange juice, eggs, cereal, butter; bath items like toothpaste, shampoo, toilet paper, excedrin; convenience foods like frozen stuffed sole, teryaki salmon, vegetarian burgers; household items like detergent. Snackfoods like big bags of almonds, dried fruit; other things like coffee, wymans blueberry juice, peanut butter, jam. These all are mostly things that don't go bad and though a bigger outlay of money is required for the large sizes, they tend to last long so I don't have to buy as often.

I'm curious what other people like to buy there.
