Cop, dog struck in dump truck crash

Monday, July 06, 2009
By CHARLES HACK
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

A Jersey City police officer was injured Saturday morning when a New York City dump truck plowed into his vehicle at the intersection of Marin Boulevard and 12th Street, reports said.

Police Officer Eric C. Petersen, 34, was taken by ambulance to the Jersey City Medical Center with neck and back pains shortly after the sanitation truck slammed into his marked police SUV at 3:25 a.m., officials said. Rommel, the 7-year-old police dog riding with Petersen, was taken to NYC Veterinary Specialists 24-hour Emergency Animal Hospital, officials said.

Petersen - who was heading north on Marin Boulevard when the driver of the dump truck ran a red light and crashed into him - was released yesterday morning, police said.

Veterinarian David Wohlstadter, who walked Rommel before discharging him later Saturday, said the dog appeared unscathed.

"Rommel has gone home and is doing well," Wohlstadter said. "He was a great dog and really friendly. It looked like he got lucky."

Chesley P. Budgell, 31, of Staten Island, who was driving the dump truck, was also taken to the JCMC. He was released yesterday after being treated for pain in his elbow and back, officials said.

Two Port Authority employees who witnessed the accident said they saw two sanitation trucks on 12th Street, police said. The first truck went through a red light and hit the police SUV, the witnesses told police. Budgell was issued a summons for failure to observe a signal and careless driving and he admitted the wreck was his fault, police said.
