BOE suspends accused janitors
Friday, January 30, 2009 By CHARLES HACK JOURNAL STAFF WRITER The two Jersey City school custodians arrested last Friday in connection with the theft of sound equipment from Dickinson High School have been suspended without pay, school officials said yesterday. "They are suspended without pay until further notice pending their right to departmental hearings," said Superintendent of Schools Charles T. Epps Jr. Patrick McCarthy, 54, of Holly Street in Jersey City, was charged with receiving stolen property, reports said. Dickinson head custodian Benjamin Smith, 34, of High Bridge, was charged with theft, reports said. Police arrested the pair while investigating the theft of equipment totaling $1,321 from Dickinson High School on Palisade Avenue between Dec. 23 last year and Jan. 12, police said. McCarthy was found in possession of two microphones, a cable and a speaker, belonging to Jersey City Public Schools, all of which he turned over to officials in a cardboard box, police said.
