When I lived on 7th Street from 2001 - 2004, my sons were little tykes and when we patronized the bodega, Mr. Parikh would always engage them and inevitably give them some extra treat. My son is now a freshman at McNair, and yes, is shaken by this. My condolences to the Parikh family and prayers for his soul. Requiscat in pacem.
One of my favorite books is Mr. Ive's Christmas which is a mediation about a father's coming to grips with the death of his son shot by a random thug in the Morningside Heights neighborhood where they live. The father is tormented, inter alia, by thoughts about whether he made a mistake staying in the City. The apathy that allows Jersey City government to continue in the status quo is the big mistake. With all due respect to the captain above, Healy, despite his personal charm and admirable qualities, is too much a product of the system. Chief Comey after all was appointed even though it is completely public that he runs a private detective agency which viollated the Private Detective Act. What kind of message does this send to the troops. The mantra of more cops is not the intelligent way to address this. Already Public Safety drains like half of the municipal budget. What is needed, above all is a more intelligent manner of deploying police power. The police department is also incredibly difficult to manage given that civil servants and cops have so many due process rights. Indeed, given what a cop can get away with, it is a credit to them how honorable most of them are. The writer above who is spooked by reading The Tipping Point is right on. While this was a random act that could have happened anywhere, crime does rise in response to certain factors, above all, a perception of laxity in a community, a perception that disorder is the norm, a perception that there is no accountability. I no longer live on 7th street having been priced out. I live in Lafayette. But, yes it is very shocking and disturbing when this happens at Hamilton Park. The violence in my Lafeyette neighborhood is largely targeted inwards- to family members, gang members, etc. (that is fodder for another post). Thankfully, bystanders are not routinely involved. However, when this type of brazen crime occurs, it is a sign that the reversal of the quality of life improvements that McCain and Schundler oversaw are coming home to roost.

It's unfortunate to have to contend with these circumstances to have the amenities you speak of. Jersey City is a great place with the proximity to the big city across the Hudson. Hoboken has problems but not to the extent we have here they seem to have their ducks in order, and the Village in Manhattan as well. Jersey City still has a mentality of days gone by. As for the shooting there's no way to predict when this would happen, it could happen anywhere any time. I blame this on the economy and poor financial planning on the culprit's part.

I moved from NYC and I knew all about JC because my boyfriend had been living here for awhile. I love living here and I love the area. Of course when I hear about horrific crimes like the needless killing of this man it makes me a little nervous. What drew me here was my boyfriend (now fiancee), the closeness to the city, the diversity, and the rent prices. Although things like this crime are scary, I wuldn't want to live anywhere else at this point in my life.

Popular Downtown merchant shot after threatening to call the police Wednesday, January 28, 2009 By MICHAELANGELO CONTE JOURNAL STAFF WRITER A popular owner of a Downtown Jersey City grocery store was gunned down at his business yesterday morning after arguing with the shooter in a failed but deadly robbery attempt, officials said. "This was clearly a gratuitous act of gun violence taking the life of the hard-working gentleman," said Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio of the death of Kiritkumar Parikh, 57, of Van Winkle Avenue, inside his Albert's Grocery at Coles and Seventh streets. At about 9:50 a.m. the gunman entered the store and after a short time approached Parikh at the counter, took out a semiautomatic handgun and demanded money, DeFazio said. When Parikh, who was there with his wife, refused to comply and said he would call the police, the man fired two rounds, one of them fatally wounding the shop owner in the left upper torso, officials said. The gunman ran from the store without taking anything, DeFazio said. The wife, who speaks little English, called her daughter instead of police, but a customer who walked in on the bloody scene dialed 911, he said. Police haven't determined if the robber fled on foot or in a vehicle, but investigators are reviewing security video, DeFazio said. Family members arrived shortly after police. Filled with disbelief and grief, they cried in the middle of Coles Street. Police escorted them first to a nearby laundromat and then to McNair Academic High School, across the street from the store. Robin Daniels, who was doing wash at the laundromat yesterday, called Parikh "a neighborhood guy." "He looked out for everybody," Daniels said. "It's just shocking. He was the kind of guy that when you bought a lottery ticket, he said, 'Good Luck.'" Zoima Moya rushed to the scene when she heard of the shooting and was in the laundromat when family members came in. "They were crying and upset," Moya said. "This is very upsetting because this is a nice man, a nice family." At about noon, staff from the state Regional Medical Examiners Office arrived and Parikh's body was loaded into a van. With a police escort, family members followed the van to the medical examiner's office in Newark. At about 3 p.m. the victim's two daughters, both in their 20s, and some other family members, returned to the store and retrieved a few items from behind the counter. The suspect is described as an African-American, around 6-feet-tall, of thin build and wearing dark clothing, DeFazio said. Anyone with information about the killing is asked to call the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office's Homicide Squad at (201) 915-1345. ======================= Mourning deli owner who knew them well Wednesday, January 28, 2009 McNair Academic High School was locked down yesterday to keep students out of the way as police investigated the killing of a store owner who sold them sandwiches, sodas and snacks. "I feel like it's a disgrace," said 12th-grader Manuel Malcampo of the fatal shooting of Kiritkumar Parikh, 57, of Van Winkle Avenue, inside his deli at Coles and Seventh streets. "It's a very senseless act and it makes you feel unsafe even in a community like this. Everyone is discussing it and the teachers feel really bad about it." Manuel said school officials informed the students over the public address system. "I never thought something like this would happen here," said 11th-grader Peter Habib. "The students are confused and upset and just devastated." Parikh knew the students so well that he'd place what they wanted on the counter seconds after they walked in, Peter said. Ninth-grader Gina Dayawon shopped at the store almost every day. "The couple was so adorable," Gina said. "The students are all wondering what reason would you have to do that to them." On the surface J.C. looks like a paradise, what drew these new residents here in the first place? Bret Schundler a complete opposite of what J.C. resembled at the time of his first election put J.C. on the map. But with mixed income neighborhoods it's going to be tough to live side by side with the haves & have nots.

For Immediate Release Contact: Hamilton Park Neighborhood Association Olu Howard, President hpnajc@gmail.com On January 27th 2009, the Hamilton Park neighborhood of Jersey City lost a vivacious community member to a violent and senseless criminal act. Mr. Kirik Parikh was shot and killed and his wife gravely injured while doing what they did almost every morning ? pouring coffee and selling newspapers at their family-run bodega. The Parikh?s store at the corner of 7th and Coles Street was a welcoming place for not only the residents of this quiet brownstone neighborhood, but also for the students and staff of McNair High School, located just across the street. Unfortunately, this horrific act of violence comes on the tails of the Hamilton Park Neighborhood Association (HPNA) making recent complaints to local police about increased criminal activity in the area and neighbor concerns regarding safety and police responsiveness. In the wake of this awful tragedy, the HPNA invites neighbors, business owners, students and staff from McNair High School to gather together at a candlelight vigil in memory of Mr. Parikh. We will gather at the Hamilton Park gazebo on Friday, January 30th at 7pm. Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy and Ward E Councilman Steven Fulop are invited to speak, as well as any neighbors or friends who may have a few words to share. We will then walk to Mr. Parikh?s store in remembrance of his fine character. He was a good neighbor to all of us and will be sorely missed. Fund information for donations to his family will be available. About the HPNA: The Hamilton Park Neighborhood Association, formed in 1977, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation that works to effectively serve the interests and needs of the citizenry of Hamilton Park, including promoting a safe neighborhood and uniting neighbors in common causes. The HPNA holds monthly meetings that are open to the public the first Wednesday of the month. Next meeting is Wed, 2/4, at 8pm at Cordero Elementary School, 158 Erie St.

About 12-15 years ago there was a rash of armed robberies downtown. They hit Walter's Liquor Store, The Pharmacy on 8th. and Monmouth and then the Bank that used to be in the Newport Mall. They had shot Walter but, Thank God, he survived. The 2 culprits were from Maryland and were captured trying to escape the Bank robbery when they crashed into a bus. They were responsible for all those robberies. I would not be surprised if this guy or guys from today strike again or are responsible for past robberies here in Jersey City. Keep your eyes open.

I feel so sad for the victim of this crime and his family, especially since according to all accounts he was a good guy.
I don't share the view of many that the lack of police presence (or whoever is in political office) can be blamed for what happened. The police can't be everywhere and the thug wouldn't have struck until they were away. What I do find horrible from our politicians is how, despite the abject failure of very strict gun laws stopping crimes like this, they do not allow law abiding citizens their right to effective self defense. Even the possibility of the store owner being armed might have prevented this tragedy. At the risk of sounding churlish, this would also cost nothing.

I love Jersey City in the few months I've been here. But the level of apathy among the government (and many of the people is shocking). I have no idea what to do, but speaking from experience, block meeting don't do anything. But I'd don't see the point in wearing goofy berets and baseball jackets.
I want to nip this crap (like people saying drug dealers hang on their stoop or the local parks) in the ass, but there seems no way to do it, and if the cops are as bad as they everyone says they are (which I don't exactly buy...) I don't know where to start. Thanks for all the feedback!

The store on Marin (Henderson) was held up at gunpoint by two thugs in ski masks two weeks ago at 8:30 PM. This is one block south of City Hall. The thugs ran out toward Montgomery Street. The owner franctically called the P.D.
It took TWENTY minutes for the response. The owner is scared as are many other merchants I've talked to. Violent crime is rampant throughout this city. Merchants and residents should march on City Hall.

It would be great if it did though as places like NYC, lots of towns in Bergen county, and even in Essex county have auxiliary units. But the problem is that the JCPD is understaffed and it would be a big burden for the JCPD to respond to calls from auxiliary units because they are already flooded with calls by people. Also auxiliary cops are not free as the city would have to pay for liability insurance and pay for equipment yadi yadi yada.

I want to say this is so horrendous and my heart and prayers are with the family and this poor man whose life was taken.
Does anyone remember that a few years ago it was really bad downtown? Remember this article in the NY TImes when the Guardian Angel's were patroling too. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/03/05/nyr ... onspecial2/05njCOVER.html I attended the neighborhood watch meetings then and perhaps I should start going back. The best thing criminals can know is this is our community and we are united and watching. However, I think how could this act have been stopped... It is very said and frightening. :(

We do need better cops and parents. We can't buy better parents but we can buy more cops, believe me I pay enough property taxes alone to pay 10% of a cop salary. The good thing is if we buy more cops, it will increase property values, which will price out the bad parents and thus lower our crime...come on people this isn't rocket science!

I agree with everyone that we need more cops and better parents, but to shift focus for a second...
This post scared the crap out of me - does anyone know if there are any leads on catching this murderer? I used to live on 9th & Coles and have since moved to VVP area. Ever since there was that mugging with the pipe right before xmas right on my block on Mercer and Varick at 6pm, I have been taking cabs home from the PATH instead of walking every day. After reading this post, I feel like I may be doing this until there is still light after 7 pm......

well Jaah - we definately agree on that. i think all criminals should be thrown in the slammer. pay the prices bastards. i dont care about rehabilitating them.
i went to one of the notorious prisons in arizona. slept in a tent with no A/C because the warden felt prisoners didn't deserve air conditioning... know what? he's right! and jerseymom - sorry about your experience in the heights... ours is the complete opposite. our neighborhood continues to have new and young families moving on in.

It was great (we lived a block away from the notorious Franklin Street) - and a welcome presence. I don't know who the PD chief was back then, but crime definitely took a hike for a good long time. Then the patrols suddenly stopped. Good luck getting a decent response time. Now it's back to the old days of graffiti tags, gang violence, drug dealing - the works. All, and I mean all of the young families I knew who bought houses have moved out of the Heights (me included) for safety and school issues. This death is another senseless tragedy - my heart and prayers go out to this family.

Cool! I worked in the JC store, maintained the website, and did some minor service work. I rode for his BMX team in Secaucus as well and worked the GT Air show and booked all the bands. I miss those guys, they were good people.

Riding a bike around in this weather is complete misery. I see bike cops all over JC in the spring/summer. Maybe it's a seasonal thing they can volunteer to sign up for?
Croft, I used to work at the Clffside Park SDS back in the late 90s/2000 and go to the JC store all the time. Did a lot of work for Tony and Jose.

I used to service those bikes at SDS bike stores. They were Raleigh F-500's which were discontinued to use to the public and were only issued as Police Bikes in the late 90's. I wonder where they all went.

First in importance, it is a terrible thing to lose a member of any community to violence. My heart goes out to family and friends of this beloved man. The police program mentioned below worked well in New Orleans as well as the hiring of an outsider police chief at a time when crime was at an all time high and morale at an all time low. We need new and innovative leadership in this city. There should be zero tolerance when it comes to crime. May you all be safe tonight and forever in the city you have chosen to live.

I'm new here, long time lurker. I live right around the corner.
I see a lot of people saying we need more cops, and I agree. However, the city can do it at minimal cost, if they enact an auxiliary police program. I just moved here, and back home most cities had it. The deal was they send you to the academy part time at night (for a few months) and give you the same training and you work 12 hours or so a month for free to the city (with benefits if you get injured, etc.). This would upset some of the high pay senior cops get (84k) around here, but would provide a benefit. Where I lived, gangs had moved into the suburbs and were shooting and burning houses. The adults in the neighborhood went through (9 of us) and patrolled on our nights off. In 2 months the problems stopped. Let citizen's take care of thier neighborhood. I'll start the flame war I see too often on here: Criminals have guns, why not let those who went through the background check and invasive gun buying process here to go to training (same armed guards get) and carry weapons for the protection of themselves? Why let the "bosses" of this S/City take it back?!!! Good service, and free!
