The Parish of the Resurrection's main church is St. Mary's. They distribute food on Tuesdays if you wish to volunteer. You can drop food off at the school office anytime. It's on 3rd street between Manila & Erie.

When I go food shopping I make it a point to buy a couple of extra cans of food, or a bag of rice and then donate. It's just a few dollars extra, and it makes a big difference.

Grace Community Services (2nd and Erie) takes food donations and help with the breakfast for the hungry program- saturdays and sundays 7am-9am- we serve a hot breakfast - eggs, sausage, grits, potatoes, pb&j, cereal and more. cook, clean, serve, or donate goods. we always need boxes of au gratin potatoes, and they are pretty cheap at shop rite or bjs.

As some of you may know, Catholic Charities runs a homeless shelter on Grove and 16th Street called St. Lucy's. Recently, the shelters numbers have swelled. This has caused some of their food supplies to be stretched thin. As a result, they have run out of dessert items. Typically, after dinner, the residents would be offered items such as yodels, twinkie's, ring ding's, etc.

For those who want to give back, the shelter could really use items like these, which mean a gread deal to those who call St. Lucy's home. For those who are not familiar with St. Lucy's, it is a shelter for both men and women, up to 80 at a time. They have Substance Abuse counseling as well as Mental Health resources for their residents.

I have, on occasion, helped with meals at the shelter, and can truly say that the people who call it home are honest, good people, who have either made some bad decisions in life, or were dealt a bad hand. I hope some of wou might choose to help, especially as we enter the holiday/winter season.

St. Lucy's by the tunnel before you get to Hoboken by the Salvation Army, go to the door. They are always willing to recieve donations. Its a great cause and every one should do it. Also grace Van Vorst church has a breakfast on the weekends for the homeless and except food donations and always look for volunteers. GET INVOLVED.

"And so Jesus gave us a new norm of greatness. If you want to be important, wonderful. If you want to be recognized, wonderful. If you want to be great, wonderful. But recognize that he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. That's a new definition of greatness.

And this morning, the thing that I like about it: by giving that definition of greatness, it means that everybody can be great, because everybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You don't have to know about Plato and Aristotle to serve. You don't have to know Einstein's theory of relativity to serve. You don't have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love. And you can be that servant."

Great and useful idea to celebrate the spirit of giving honoring Martin Luther King!

A keyword search of "donation", "food" will bring up prior topic threads on this topic. Here are a few below and I highly recommend St Lucy's Shelter:

Where are there shelters, etc. in Jersey City where we can make non-perishable food donations or volunteer our time?

from MoveOn.org:

"Barack and Michelle Obama have a request for us: Spend this coming Monday?Martin Luther King Day?volunteering to serve the urgent needs in our communities.

In this economic crisis, food banks are struggling to keep up. Homeowners need help weatherizing to keep out the cold. Schools are crumbling.

Some folks have been hit harder by the recession than others, but we're all in it together. We've all got to roll up our sleeves and help each other out. And volunteering is always a great experience?in just a few hours, you can help make a huge difference in the lives of others."
