Alexander Milman on Grand Street is excellent. This is not a flashy practice, no gleaming high-tech surfaces or expensive waiting room decor; but rest assured: the equipment is modern, everything is squeaky clean, and Milman really knows his stuff. I particularly enjoy the fact that he does all the work himself (at least he has in my case, heavy duty work as well as simple stuff like cleaning). For example, recently I had a serious case of gingivitis brewing. That's what brought me to Milman in the first place. Milman took some X-rays, discussed the issue, and I agreed to proceed; he performed a full-mouth ultrasonic scaling treatment right there on the spot (no second visit, he did entire mouth in a single session, not in two or four sessions, with two or four separate fees, as some dentists might). The ultrasonic took more than an hour and was a bit of an ordeal, even with the topical novocane; but it was definitely worth it. I think I spit out more blood that day than Muhammad Ali did after the Thilla in Manila. But that procedure, plus two weeks of rinsing with chlorhexidine gluconate ... and I feel like I have a whole new mouth. Dr. Milman's fees are also very fair. What's not to like?

I now see a wonderful young dentist who just started his practice. His name is Bo Seok. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania dental school and interned at Columbia Presbyterian.

He's done 2 root canals on me with no pain and takes almost all insurance. His practice is Jersey City Dental Care, 3285 Kennedy Blvd. Near Manhattan Ave. 201-659-4512.

Anyone out there on dental plan via Secure Horizons (thru Oxford)? My husband is retired, and the dentists on his plan that were mentioned on another JClist dental thread were all of the "DON'T go to this guy" ones...

Wondering if anyone else is on this plan and has found a GOOD dentist somehow!??!?

Dr. Cohen on Newark Ave. Downtown JC. The best!
Pristine, efficient, state-of -the-art. Everything is computerized so there is no waiting. Staff is wonderful. Dr. Cohen is on top of the whole operation. Smart, experienced and personable. He will even give you his cell # if you need.
Can't praise him enough.

I went to Dr. Cohen's practice for a little over a year. His partner "Dr. K." was my dentist, not Cohen. I agree with caps. I left when they kept pressuring me to do unnecessary stuff just to keep the revenue flowing. For example, they wanted me to come in for a check-up and cleaning 3 times a year instead of 2 - even though my teeth were fine and insurance only pays for it twice a year. The final straw for me was when an x-ray showed a spot that "might" develop into a cavity. It wasn't a cavity yet, and I haven't had a cavity in over 20 years. They wanted to go ahead, drill a hole in the spot and fill it in anyway! I went to my parents' dentist out in the 'burbs, and he said the questionable spot could be left alone - especially since my teeth were otherwise in excellent condition, i was good about getting regular check-ups and I flossed regularly. In some ways, I felt Cohen's office was trying to take advantage of me the same way a mechanic would - by constantly finding problems that really weren't problems.

I also forgot to mention this: Even though I had made clear to Cohen's office that I would only be going in every 6 months for a routine check-up and cleaning, they would carpet bomb my email, home phone and cell phone when the 4-month mark approached. It was like dealing with a telemarketer, or even worse, a stalker. Every other dentist I've dealt with was content to send just a reminder postcard.

I like Tribeca Dental. (I know you said not in the city, but its only a 5-10 minute walk from WTC.) If you can go during the day (ie, not early morning or after 4pm), you should be able to get an appointment fairly soon. I usually go on my lunch break for checkups and cleaning, and have never had to wait more than 10 minutes, and am usually in and out in under 50 minutes.

Don't know about their prices since I have insurance. When I was first searching for dentists covered in my insurance, I was hesitant to try them because their website seems to really emphasize cosmetic procedures. However, they have never even brought them up while I was in the office.

I still love Dr Nancy Hanna in Journal Square. They are really friendly, and will talk about costs with you if that's a concern. They also don't give you a hard time if it has been a while since you visited a dentist, which is nice.
I don't have dental insurance either, so I got this dental discount plan, which gets you like 40% off most things. I think exams are free, and cleanings are pretty cheap. The one that Dr Hanna takes is Northeast Southeast.

Thanks all who contributed to the thread. I am in open enrollment and about to move to Jersey City from Brooklyn and my current Manhattan dentist is out network and out of favor.

I see a lot of recommendations for Dr. Lustiger who is looking like my next dentist.

Again, thanks!

Also, it's the horrible CIGNA DHMO, which apparently no one seems to take...

Anyone know anything about these practices, which do happen to be on my provider's list?

Pourang Bral (he got two good reviews on RateMD.com)

Davis Saltzberg & Wenger

Argh....thanks all!

IF YOU DONT HAVE DENTAL INSURANCE...

There are 2 places to go in Jersey City I have found that go on a pay scale and are really affordable.

Horizon Health: 201 963 5774
(usually the wait for an appointment is a few weeks but they do the following services: cleaning/xrays/fillings/caps)

North Hudson Corp: 201 210 0200
(these guys book appointments a couple days after you call and they do cleaning/xrays/fillings/root canal)

I dont have a recommendation but can tell you where you should not go... Newport Center Dental in the mall is the absolute worst. If you go in for a 11 am appt you are lucky if they see you by 12:30.

Then they just tell you that they are backed up or running late. Apparently they have dentists that show up whenever they want despite the appts they have scheduled.

I took the many recommendations for Dr. Lustiger and went for my first visit yesterday. The staff was very nice, as was Dr. Lustiger The computerized x-rays are cool. He will be redoing a filling I had done previously, because it was not sculpted correctly around the tooth, and I trust him because I could see it in the x-ray. haha. Anyways, this was a useful thread, and I feel much better about my new dentist.

On a side note, the floor the office is located at, at 1 exchange place is creepy. It seems as though that office is the only one left in the building other than the 1st floor lobbey. I felt like I was walking through a fun house.

Does anyone have recommendations for a good dentist in Jersey City or (if outside JC) near the stops of the PATH/Light Rail? We are new here and need to do some dental work. Grateful for your sharing info!

Dr. Cheng at 99 Montgomery St. is very good. It is very easy to get to from Grove or Ex. Pl. PATH or the Light Rail.

+1 on Lustinger. Excellent job and in my experience, has you in and out of the office fairly quickly. His staff is quite good as well.

His office is super convenient to exchange place path. He's literally 2 stories above the newly opened Cosi, right by the light rail.

Dr. Lombardi is not downtown, but he's in JC and he's an excellent orthodontist-one of the best in North Jersey. I went to him as a young adult. He's on Kennedy Blvd, about a 15 minute walk from Journal Square.

I just met the dentist(s) here yesterday. I walked in out of curiosity. What a great office. Everything is up to date, very modern, VERY CLEAN, and the dentist seem very nice and knowledgeable. Fantastic addition to the area. I am going to give them a try beacuse it is closer to home. I'll let you know in 6 months.

Also, keep in mind that dentist ( dental offices) set their fees by zipcodes plus or minus a few dollars unless they are medicare providers. Also keep in mind that you get what you pay for. What i mean by that is, Sterilization, up to date materials ( if a dentist trys to put a silver filling in your mouth RUN), and if your having any type of crown or prosthetic work done make sure they dont use a cheap lab in china. That crown may only cost you 800.00 but guess what your gonna spend another 1200.00 in 5 years to get it right.
i would rather have it done right the first time, be sure that they sterilize their equipment, and trust the person that's in my mouth.

I like Dr. John Rosa in the Newport Area, across from Modell's Sports. Does not try to upsell you with additional services and his hygienists are gentle during the cleanings.

40 Newport Pkwy # P1, (201) 626-3366

You have to walk through the parking lot to get to the office.

He has great reviews on Kannekt

Dr. Anthony Grillo on Kennedy Blvd. (near St. Peters College) and his partner is Dr. Collucci who is also very good. I have had bonding done on my teeth by Dr. Grillo and his prices are very reasonable. I think he's only there 2 days a week

I have had 7 crowns from Dr. Grillo and bonding and fillings too. Needless to say I think he is the greatest. The thing that is nice about him is he is very very steady with his hands. I think this is terribly important in a dentist. His partner Colucci is doing an implant for me. I lost a tooth following a crack and infection that just got away from me and they both opened up the office and saw me right away to clean it out. I was referred to Vecchione who is a young NYU trained periodontist near Journal Square. His office is extremely clean, professional and terrific for someone afraid of pain. They did the graft and the implant post. Their cleanings are fantastic because they have the most amazing cleaning machine. Grillo and Colucci are on Kennedy Blvd near Montgomery St in the St. Peters area-- not far from the Hague Building.

Imahog: Tell me more about this "cleaning machine" of which you speak. I am absolutely **terrified** of those pointy metal things that my dentist office usually uses to clean teeth. I would welcome a much lower stress alternative.

I go to Dr Jorden Alter (sorry, he is actually in Bayonne),, but i know a few JC residents that go to him. Late hours, think until 8pm on some night. Sundays as well. Great staff, friendly and personable. Works great with his hands and always checks on you to ensure you are okay.

I would go to Bayonne. Unfortunately the only Bayonne Periodontists in my network are these.

Gerhard, Ronald F

I don't have dental insurance, so I haven't been to a dentist in years, but I think it's time now. What's the most affordable place to go in the area? I don't want to get stuck paying thousands for a couple of fillings, and most private dental insurance doesn't actually start covering anything substantial until you've had it for a year or two.

My husband and I both go to Dr. Gerstenfeld (two doctors, actually -- father and son) on Washington St. in Hoboken. It's a really simple office, but they do a great job. Very personalized treatment.

I also have Aetna and I go to Dr. Lustiger, down in Exchange Place. He is fabulous and so is the rest of his staff...very professional!

Abrams, Keith A
Gerhard, Ronald F
Mirmadjlessi, Nima

Thanks anyways for responding.

Being as I couldn't get any periodontist recommendations, I had to randomly choose one. I chose Dr. Gerhard. I hope he's good
