I am not sure if they would handle a gown and tuxedo (I don't see why not) so you may want to try Daniel's on Grove. Very good work, and a very reasonable price. They also have a quick turn around on alterations. My only complaint is about their hours. They are a bit inconvenient, if I recall correctly. Regardless, give them a call or, better yet, stop by and bring the items. The guy who handles customers will take a quick look and give you an estimate of time and cost right on the spot.

I need a trusted, excellent tailor to alter a gown and tuxedo. I tried the number for http://decarlosbespoke.com/ who I heard was very good but their number is out of order and voice mail says they don't have access, I worry that's not a great sign.

Any Suggestions?

Second!!

I LOVE this place! She does phenomenal work. I've had the waist of skirts taken in whole sizes, pants hemmed, an entire suit taken in (sleeves shortened, pants hemmed, jacket taken in at the back). Never had a problem!

I have Decarlo's working on a cashmere blazer for me. Price is reasonable but not cheap. His work is top notch so I feel it's worth the extra money to have it done right. For simple things like pants being hemmed I go to Daniel's on grove. 10 bucks for pants is what he charges.

Just wanted to give a shout out to DeCarlos, a custom tailor on Monmouth between 3rd and 4th.

We've been using him for alterations for some time now - always does a fantastic job. Recently, my fiance bought a pair of custom-made pants from DeCarlos. I can't believe how amazing they look - all the little touches and details - and how perfect the fit is.

Thanks, DeCarlos! You've made my guy very happy!

Without a doubt - DeCarlos on Monmouth Street between 3rd & 4th. His main business is bespoke suiting but also does tailoring. Very reasonable, great quality of work.

Anyone have any experience with tailors downtown or anywhere else in JC that sew working button holes?
I might also need some jacket sleeves shortened from the shoulder.
Any suggestions from people that have had this type of work done and are pleased would be appreciated.

Daniel's on Grove right by Ibby's has done good work for me -- even on leather. Fast and reasonably priced.

I recommend Golden Cleaners on Newark Ave. near the corner of Grove. I've had them hem many pairs of pants and jeans for me and they always do an excellent job. And it's cheap -- around $8 I think.

Josel's Cleaners used to have a great tailor who hemmed pants, skirts, etc and even sewed a couple pillows for me (with zippers). Now that he has left, I can't get in touch with his tailor and I'm in desperate need for someone in the area who is affordable and up to sewing crafty projects. Anyone know if any of the dry cleaners or anyone else in the area does this type of work? Josel and his tailor were really great.

Alterations to Go - thats the place on Washington b/w Morris and Sussex.

They have in house tailors that specialize in either mens or womens alterations. Have always done a good job on everything I've taken there.

Can anyone recommend a good tailor in JC (preferably near downtown) or Hoboken? Need to have some suits altered, and not very hip on the idea of taking them to the dry cleaners around the corner.

There is a tailor in the heights on Hutton St. and Central Ave. She's awesome. She does the original hem for $8. it's the cheapest I've ever paid. It's called Felicia's tailoring. Not sure if you have a car to get there. It's about a 10 minute drive from downtown.

Garyg,

I've had this done at two places downtown:

- Daniel Professional Tailoring ~ 299 Grove St
(the shop glx is referring to)

- Tailor's Touch Dry Cleaners ~ 358 7th St

Both places will have you try the jeans on and they'll pin them for you. I was first a customer at Daniel but switched to Tailor's Touch when a couple of pairs of pants came out a bit too short. TT's regular alteration price for one pair of jeans is $8. Attaching the original hems costs $7 extra. After years of getting this done and hating the look of jeans with clean, pressed, new hems. I think the extra cost is definitely worth it.

Anyone know of a good tailor that can shorten the inseam of my jeans and reattach the original bottoms? I'm looking for a reference from someone who has had it done. I've had hit or miss results with this and would prefer not to ruin my jeans. Thanks!
