I like Tribeca Dental. (I know you said not in the city, but its only a 5-10 minute walk from WTC.) If you can go during the day (ie, not early morning or after 4pm), you should be able to get an appointment fairly soon. I usually go on my lunch break for checkups and cleaning, and have never had to wait more than 10 minutes, and am usually in and out in under 50 minutes.

Don't know about their prices since I have insurance. When I was first searching for dentists covered in my insurance, I was hesitant to try them because their website seems to really emphasize cosmetic procedures. However, they have never even brought them up while I was in the office.

I also forgot to mention this: Even though I had made clear to Cohen's office that I would only be going in every 6 months for a routine check-up and cleaning, they would carpet bomb my email, home phone and cell phone when the 4-month mark approached. It was like dealing with a telemarketer, or even worse, a stalker. Every other dentist I've dealt with was content to send just a reminder postcard.

I went to Dr. Cohen's practice for a little over a year. His partner "Dr. K." was my dentist, not Cohen. I agree with caps. I left when they kept pressuring me to do unnecessary stuff just to keep the revenue flowing. For example, they wanted me to come in for a check-up and cleaning 3 times a year instead of 2 - even though my teeth were fine and insurance only pays for it twice a year. The final straw for me was when an x-ray showed a spot that "might" develop into a cavity. It wasn't a cavity yet, and I haven't had a cavity in over 20 years. They wanted to go ahead, drill a hole in the spot and fill it in anyway! I went to my parents' dentist out in the 'burbs, and he said the questionable spot could be left alone - especially since my teeth were otherwise in excellent condition, i was good about getting regular check-ups and I flossed regularly. In some ways, I felt Cohen's office was trying to take advantage of me the same way a mechanic would - by constantly finding problems that really weren't problems.

Dr. Cohen on Newark Ave. Downtown JC. The best!
Pristine, efficient, state-of -the-art. Everything is computerized so there is no waiting. Staff is wonderful. Dr. Cohen is on top of the whole operation. Smart, experienced and personable. He will even give you his cell # if you need.
Can't praise him enough.

Anyone out there on dental plan via Secure Horizons (thru Oxford)? My husband is retired, and the dentists on his plan that were mentioned on another JClist dental thread were all of the "DON'T go to this guy" ones...

Wondering if anyone else is on this plan and has found a GOOD dentist somehow!??!?

I now see a wonderful young dentist who just started his practice. His name is Bo Seok. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania dental school and interned at Columbia Presbyterian.

He's done 2 root canals on me with no pain and takes almost all insurance. His practice is Jersey City Dental Care, 3285 Kennedy Blvd. Near Manhattan Ave. 201-659-4512.

Alexander Milman on Grand Street is excellent. This is not a flashy practice, no gleaming high-tech surfaces or expensive waiting room decor; but rest assured: the equipment is modern, everything is squeaky clean, and Milman really knows his stuff. I particularly enjoy the fact that he does all the work himself (at least he has in my case, heavy duty work as well as simple stuff like cleaning). For example, recently I had a serious case of gingivitis brewing. That's what brought me to Milman in the first place. Milman took some X-rays, discussed the issue, and I agreed to proceed; he performed a full-mouth ultrasonic scaling treatment right there on the spot (no second visit, he did entire mouth in a single session, not in two or four sessions, with two or four separate fees, as some dentists might). The ultrasonic took more than an hour and was a bit of an ordeal, even with the topical novocane; but it was definitely worth it. I think I spit out more blood that day than Muhammad Ali did after the Thilla in Manila. But that procedure, plus two weeks of rinsing with chlorhexidine gluconate ... and I feel like I have a whole new mouth. Dr. Milman's fees are also very fair. What's not to like?

I recently went to Dr. Lustiger's office for the first time. It was an all around good experience, not too hard to get an appointment, friendly staff, no pressure and a good cleaning.

Dr. Steven Winik on Glenwood Avenue is the most painless dentist out there. he did major reconstructive work on some of my teeth and I truly felt nothing. I don't know how he does it, but I didn't feel anything when he injected the needle in my gums.
THere is no need for general anesthesia with him.

Im interested in finding a dentist that uses general anesthesia. Im a HUGE chicken and I just found out that I have 5 cavities (albeit small ones between my teeth) that have got to be filled in. I was very tense during the check up so the dentist "suggested" that G.A. is the way to go. So Im turning to my JC List family for help.

So speak up and let me know what dentist you know that uses this procedure for chickens like moi. :)

Two dentists that I DO NOT recommend are

1) The Baines Quacks at 386 Central Ave. I went in in '05 with a toothache and one of the Baines' bros. said I needed a root canal. I went back two days for my treatment and another Baines brother said I needed just a filling. Half way through the job he said he had an emergency and would finish the next day. The next day he did a so-so job in finishing the tooth filling. Whichever Baines brother (there are some sons and a father [or at least were] working there at the time said because of a wedding he had to leave early that day. Yeesh! I walked out while waiting for another x-ray.

2) Cynthia Leung in Hoboken. I went to her in '05/'06 because I read good things on the Internet. She was OK, a little rough and painful...but not horrible. Last October I was experiencing severe tooth pain and made several attempts at what I thought was a simple thing: to make an appointment. I would get someone on the phone who told me it was so busy they would call me back with the information for an appointment. Never did. Next day...same thing. Third time was the charm...they said my appointment could be for six weeks from that day...Eventually, I found another dentist - Exchange Dental Group in Wall St. area, where I work & hey, they even have Sunday hours.

Oh yeah, Dr. Leung's ass't or whoever called around the time of my scheduled app't and bumped it to mid-January claiming it was due to her busy schedule. I did not 'entertain the thought' of calling to laugh in the ears on the phone.

Thank you for your response.
Dr. Richard Cohen was referred to me by an associate in CA. From I am hearing, the dentist is a little eccentric but does very nice work and has the patients best interest in mind. Dr. Anthony Sallustio in Bayonne is good but expensive.
Dr. Cohen is a local visit for me. Guess I made my choice to go to him.

My plan doesn't offer a lot of dentists in the Grove PATH area, so I'm going to try Platinum Dental on Broadway in lower Manhattan. Anyone have experience with it?

Another vote for Paul Lustiger. He does good work - does NOT press you to replace every filling in your mouth. Reasonable prices - rarely had to wait - available for emergency visits.

I am new to J.C. and would like some feedback please.
I received a referral of a local dentist in our area. His name is Dr. Richard Cohen, who has his office on Newark Avenue.
If anyone has an opinion of his work, or would like to refer me to another dentist, please respond asap.
Much appreicated.

Another vote for Paul Lustiger at Exchange Place.

Great dentist, high-tech office equipment, never more than a few minutes wait, usually no wait at all.

I know this is not downtown, Dr Rickerby in Journal Square is great. Just one Path ride away and open Saturday's. It is at 1 Journal Square Plaza and just a 15 minute walk from downtown.

I recommend Dr. Cynthia Reyes on Marin Blvd. She's terrific and always gets top notch attention from her. She does amazing cleaning! I had her as my dentist a looong time ago since my family knows her. When I moved to JC, I decided to use her again since even my dad remembers her as being amazing.

I now see Dr. Spiro Papadatos 2 blks from VV, at bright and monmouth right before you get to the pathmark. He's great, very thorough, only there 3 days a week.

I used to go to Dr. Medrano, right on the park at jersey and york, she's good and her hygenists are excellent. I stopped seeing her a while ago but i recall she did a sliding scale based on what you can pay.

Also, i think her brother and father run the Doctor's clinic on the ground floor--it's a sliding scale clinic (that's why you often see folks lined up on Jersey there) and the waiting room is extremely dingy, but the doctors Medrano are very nice and their examination room is fine. I once went there when i had a terrible earache that came on suddenly, they fit me in right away and gave me the necessary prescription for antibiotics. I don't know how they are on more complex ailments, but if it's something simple and not mysterious--where you need assistance right away-- i think they're great.

of course for an emergency room i wouldn't stay within j.c., but that's another thread i'm sure.

When I first moved here, I saw Dr. Cohen. Since he specializes in cosmetic dentistry- he was good in persuading me to get a few things done that I didnt really need- and one time, the cleaning hurt so bad that I had to go back and get pain killers.
I use a dentist in the city- Joseph Sachs- 18th and 7th. They take alot of insurance plans and the staff is terrific, cleanings are pain free and convenient to PATH.
