um, I agree good job by the tow truck company, but no matter how you slice it, patrolling a private parking lot for non-shoppers is not a public QOL issue

I think what's really telling here is how Newport Mall attracts STUPID people. First, parking in the lot to get towed. Okay, not so bright, but forgivable. Having a hand gun in sight after parking illegally-- stupid. Having drugs on you when the cops show up to arrest you for stupidly leaving your hand gun in your car when you parked illegally-- super stupid.

Sounds like the tow truck company enforcing the quality of life crimes that we should expect.
Just imagine how many more of these infractions would be caught by simply enforcing all QOL laws. good job by the tow truck company.

eesh-- three perpetually-fun JCList topics in one time saving post!
What have we learned? 1) Don't park in ShopRite if you're going to the mall, they will git ya. 2) At least he didn't bring his loaded handgun INTO the mall, that was nice. 3) These folks WEREN'T from JC.... Newport's bad element isn't all homegrown. (heavy layer of sarcasm applies)

Police: Pair left gun in SUV to go shopping
Thursday, February 07, 2008 A couple of shoppers who illegally parked in a free parking lot Tuesday while visiting the Newport Centre Mall in Jersey City faced more than a towing charge after they left a loaded handgun in open view, reports said. Newark residents Shawn D. "Hawk" Hawkins, 25, and Latabria R. Tabron, 20, of Osborne Terrace, were charged with unlawful possession of weapons. Hawkins was additionally charged with marijuana possession, police said. A spotter for the lot's towing company saw the couple park their green Ford Explorer near the Wachovia Bank in the BJs and Shop Rite parking lot on Marin Boulevard, and then cut through the fence to the mall, at around 1 p.m., reports said. As a tow-truck operator prepared to remove the car he noticed the grip of a handgun sticking out from between the center console and a passenger seat, police said. He called police after towing the sports utility vehicle to the company's yard on Grand Street, reports said. Cops opened the SUV and pulled out a black .32-caliber Berretta that was loaded with five rounds in the magazine. The tow truck operator later spotted Hawkins and Tabron looking for their SUV in the lot and called police, who arrested them, reports said. A search of Hawkins, who had warrants out of Irvington and Hillside, revealed a small bag with marijuana in his pants pocket. CHARLES HACK
