Rasoi, on newark ave, is by far the best indian restaurant I have ever been to. They have a buffet everyday, except Mondays, when they're closed.
It's North Indian Food...If you're looking for South Indian fast food, try Dosa Hut, also on Newark Ave.

I find Medina's $6 buffet reasonable and tasty, though technically not Indian but Halal Pakistani I believe. Grove & Mercer.

+1 for Rasoi. I tried them for the first time a couple of weeks ago. They agreed to deliver downtown even though their minimum order is $20 and mine was only $18. I ordered the saag paneer which I asked for extra hot & spicy. The portion was huge & very spicy & delicious. Lots of leftovers.

My only complaint was that delivery took awhile - but I guess they didn't have to deliver at all. Next time I think I'm going to go sit down at the restaurant and eat.

Can't wait to try some of the dosa places you guys mention! :)

OH MAN! Rasoi delivers downtown?! I love Rasoi and haven't had the chance to go sit down and eat there in awhile. My mouth just watered. I think they'll be receiving a call from me.

May I ask how long the delivery took?

They took a little over an hour. This was on a Friday night. $20 minimum.

I just ate at Rasoi this evening, always a delicious feast. The lamb korma -- like butta. And always with friendly, extremely attentive service. Someone I know who grew up outside the States said the best Indian food he ever had in the US was on Newark Ave. in Jersey City. And Rasoi is the best on the block, in my opinion.

JSalt- thanks for clarifying. I'll have to check it out too. Dosa House is excellent, none-the-less.

I'm sure there's threads on which are the best, the one I like I think is called "Dosa Hut"

I think the place you're referring to is Sri Ganesh's Dosa House on Newark. I recently went there for the first time with my friend and it was excellent. She wrote a review of it for www.jerseycityuncovered.com

My suggestion is Amiya located by the water by the financial center. The place is really clean and the food and service have been always exceptional. They call it modern indian cuisine but the menu is very similiar to the places on newark ave. The presentation is better and it seems like they use better ingredients. The prices might be a bit higher but for me its worth it cause I know what I am eating and the place is really clean. Also the service is great, I had a few bad experiences on Newark ave. I know, i know, its sounds like i work there...

I have had good experiences at Bolo Curry and Rasoi...good, clean establishments. Great food at both. But, have had horrible experience with the brand-new 'A Taste of India' on Kennedy blvd. and Griffith St.

First, the grand opening was on Easter day. As by midday the weather was sunny and mild, I took a walk with the wife. As we saw the signage for this place for the past three months and were wondering when it was going to open we ran across the JFK blvd. traffic to check this place out.

STAY AWAY! Immediately entering we were both "greeted" with the overwhelming smell of URINE! The Jersey City agency that oversees restaurants should check this place out!

Not even the 'celebratory' incense burning within the very tiny space could make one not notice the stench. As the wife and I looked at each other we surmised that possibly some elderly person lives in the rear or the store or we just missed a major medical accident. However, the flyers that advertised a slew of possibly interesting dishes made us wonder why there was only a very, very tiny counter space, four chairs and not much else.

As the Samosas were cheap, we ordered one to go. However, we were told they were sold in orders of 2. Odd, how the warming plate contained about five of them, and why they wouldn't sell me one was strange. We purchased them and ran out of the store. We stopped at Gordon Park, unpacked our brown paper bag, both bit into the Samosas and spit them out immediately as we were "greeted" with the taste and aroma of RANCID MEAT & VEGETABLES.

I regret that my two most recent posts on the list have been negative ones about JC eating establishments...but this place should be closed immediately.

They also have a garish-ly painted truck that claims to offer 'catering' services. Yeah, eat the food and go right to the hospital. DO not pass go. Please do not go here.

Why on earth would you even go here, the tell tale signs were there. You saw the over crowded hot plate not stove mind you, the place reeked, and then you had the bravery to actually bite into one, I would have run to the hospital then called the police emergency squad. I hope your "this will be adventurous" thought taught you a lesson. I assume you have good health insurance. And by the way depending on where you eat, J.C. has some terrific clean restaurants, you just have to know where to go.

I have been to Devi several times and Amiya once. I'm not sure that Devi is authentic ( it's the only time I have had lobster in an indian restaurant), but as a restaurant (food quality, service, decor etc.) it is in another league compared to Amiya. I like Amiya, but the comparison is silly.

If Indira thought it was good I wonder what Sonia thought as well. Sonia is the Italian widow of Indira's son.

would definitely recommend BOLO CURRY at the corner of Newark and Tonnelle. by far the best food on the strip.

try their lunch buffet - their chicken is absolutely amazing!

Other place I would go again is Nanking - near the Exchange Place PATH - think its in the 101 Hudson building

Would not go again:

Would never go to Rasoi again - as someone said earlier, their sauce is the same for all the dishes!

Also, there's a new place that opened up called China Spice which is literally at the corner of Newark and Tonnelle - havent tried yet. Has anyone tried this place yet?

Rasoi is really popular and it's delicious but EVERYTHING ALWAYS comes in this orange curry sauce.. I guess it's like their homestyle signature sauce? I almost sent back my food because I thought it was the wrong dish. For awhile they were the only menu we had and kept ordering from there and no matter what we ordered, it came in the orange sauce. It's a good sauce but your food might not look like how you expect it to look.

Bolo Curry is delicious (and normal).

I think those are the only 2 I have tried.. oh and the dosa hut is good too for what it is (cheap & quick)

I am craving uttapams and I want to know where the best spot is to get one with really good coconut chutney? I'm sure there are some really good spots around Journal Square considering all the Indian restaurants there.

Any recommendations?

First place I ever went to was India on the Hudson in Hoboken (same owners as Karma Cafe, I think). My vote is still for The Village Restaurant on Newark Ave. They get plenty of points for having a full bar.

Sorry, but which one? Rasoi?

It looks to me as if Medina would take halal pretty seriously, given it's location across from the mosque.
