I thought it would be more of a rendezvous and less of a lineup. The ships were kinda far apart, and hung out in the harbor for only a moment before moving on.

Still, as far as nerd Jersey things to do on a Sunday night go, it was pretty cool.

They really took a long time to bring the ships from Midtown. When the fireworks started, the rain came too. This was a bad choice of a day.

Check out the waves from these Queens!
by Hudson County Now
Sunday January 13, 2008, 1:43 PM
AP file photoQueen Elizabeth II waves to the crowd during a visit to America in 2004. Her namesake and two other cruiselines will be visible today from the Hudson County waterfront.

The three Cunard Queen ships - the Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth 2 and the new Queen Victoria - are expected to meet in the waters off Lower Manhattan (across from Liberty State Park in Jersey City) this evening, with the Statue of Liberty as a backdrop.

Fireworks, scheduled for 7:30 p.m., will commemorate the event. Organizers say the public will have great views of the three ships and the fireworks from Lower Manhattan as well as Liberty State Park.

The Queen Victoria was christened Dec. 10 in Southampton, England, by the Duchess of Cornwall (Camilla Parker Bowles, who is married to Prince Charles), the Associated Press reported. The ship embarked last week on a three-month around-the-world cruise, including a trans-Atlantic crossing with the QE2.

After Victoria and the QE2 arrive in New York, they will rendezvous with the QM2, which homeports in Brooklyn. The meeting of the three grand ships should be quite a sight, all lit up and twinkling in the winter darkness of New York Harbor.

The Queen Elizabeth 2 is expected to be retired from service later this year. Cunard is building a new Queen Elizabeth for a 2010 launching.

One is parked in Red Hook already. Looks like QM2.

The Daily News says that the fireworks will be at 7:30 PM tonight. Hopefully, it will be before the snow starts.

Just bumping this as a reminder that this is tonight.

Will we all be out there in the snow?

Grove PATH;
Thanks so much for this news. This is truly a chance of a lifetime to see these 3 beauties together. It really harkens back to the days when the Hudson River, (which is actually the North River at this location), was a bustling seaport.
It will be spectacular. Do you know if they are all docking in Brooklyn with the QM2? Seems so. I'l have to check the Cunard site. Again, thanks so much for this.

Cool beans. But let's do the math, AP...

You can either pay $585 to see the ships from a Battery Park hotel room or $125 to see them even closer from another ship or...or diddly squat to see them closer yet from the pastoral precincts of Liberty Square Park.

Do I smell a PR agency pitch, or what?

Great tip! Too bad full moon isn't until Jan 22 which would have made it literally out of this world. Moonrise over Liberty's torch viewed from the waterfront walkway at the southern end of Liberty State Park makes one of the most spectacular views anywhere on earth.

Hudson to have great view of 3 Cunard Queen ships together in harbor

The Associated Press
December 24

Get your cameras ready!

The three Cunard Queen ships -- the Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth 2 and the new Queen Victoria -- are expected to meet in the waters off Lower Manhattan (across from Liberty State Park in Jersey City) on the evening of Jan. 13, with the Statue of Liberty as a backdrop and fireworks celebrating the once-in-a-lifetime event.

The Queen Victoria was christened Dec. 10 in Southampton, England, by the Duchess of Cornwall (Camilla Parker Bowles, who is married to Prince Charles). The ship embarks Jan. 6 on a three-month around-the-world cruise, including a trans-Atlantic crossing with the QE2.

After Victoria and the QE2 arrive in New York, they will rendezvous with the QM2, which homeports in Brooklyn. The meeting of the three grand ships should be quite a sight, all lit up and twinkling in the winter darkness of New York Harbor. Fireworks are scheduled for 7 p.m.

The public will be able to view the spectacle from the parks and open spaces ringing Lower Manhattan, including Battery Park on Manhattan's southern shore; and Robert F. Wagner Jr. Park, located just south of the Museum of Jewish Heritage.

If you're willing to pay for your viewing privileges, there are a couple of options. A special four-hour cruise scheduled for Jan. 13 departs South Street Seaport's Pier 16 at 4 p.m., returning at 8 p.m., aboard the Zephyr. Tickets are $125, including cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. Reservations required. The cruise is sponsored by the South Street Seaport Museum; details at nycharities.org or 212-748-8786.

The Ritz-Carlton New York in Battery Park in Lower Manhattan is offering an "Anchors Aweigh" package starting at $585 per couple with a nonrefundable three-day advance payment. The price includes breakfast in bed and a seafood tasting for two; all the rooms offered with this package have telescopes and harbor views for prime viewing of the ships. Details at ritzcarlton.com or 800-241-3333.

The Queen Elizabeth 2 is expected to be retired from service later in 2008. Cunard is building a new Queen Elizabeth for a 2010 launching.
