The most important thing that a Whole Foods would do is put pressure on the other grocery stores in the area to sink or swim. I don't think ShopRite or A&P do a very good job of providing high quality produce or decent customer service. I think with a Whole Foods in their backyard, one of those stores will either get its act together or go under. So even if you don't shop at Whole Foods, you'd probably benefit from its presence.

FYI, I did e-mail Jacqueline Klinger inquiring about a Whole Foods in Jersey City, here is her response:

I too vote for Trader Joe's - a no brainer (unless they have a company policy against dealing with corrupt municipalities)

To my understanding, the PAD redevelopment plan is still undergoing changes at this point. Although there are plenty of construction approvals & zoning restrictions in place, I'm still wondering what brandname businesses will be moving in amongst the boutique shops we're all expecting there. Wholefoods would be a nice alternative to Shoprite.

What we need here is a store like Integral Yoga that's on 13th Street in the city. If someone opened a store like that, I would shop there ALL the time! Their produce is ALL organic and it's always beautiful and affordable. How do they do it?!?!

went to the whole foods in edgewater last night for the first time (didn't even know it existed until i read about it on here the other day). decent size, good selection, reasonable prices. granted you have a car it's not that far of a drive from downtown JC and considering i only go food shopping about once every two weeks i'd rather drive the extra 20 minutes to shop at whole foods than have to go to a&p.

If 'whole foods' does decide to set-up business here, it would be nice if they were located a short walk from the light rail, so everyone could access them.

I requested on the Whole Foods site last year that they open a location here... since everyone on this list is at least interested in the idea I suggest you do the same!

Went to the A&P yesterday for the first time since the renos. Yes, the produce is still overpriced (I'm a fan of Lee's on Grove myself), but there are a few noteworthy additions: the salad bar, the cheap takeout pizza, and the Ace Bakery breads (a welcome sight for this Canadian expat).

Still, I wish we'd get a Trader Joe's. I know it's not far to Union Square, but it's a pain lugging groceries on the PATH.

I went to world fruit farm today (cause of your suggestions) and it seemed clean-ish not corporate super market style but not nasty bodega either

they had a good selection of fruits and veggies.....most of them much cheaper than I would get at A& P too

the zucchini for $0.79/# vs 1.99 and cucumbers 2/$1 vs 3/$2 (or sometimes $0.99 each) was nice since I go through a few of those a week - also ripe mangos for $0.50 each.....I just made some mango salsa and guacamole....yum!

I think the fruit market next to the Synergy Gym on Newark is the freshest of them all, but the one on grove next to the arab newspaper store is pretty decent too. The best part of the World Fruit Farm though is all the Kinder Chocolate.

Too bad the Edgewater Whole Foods is so far away. Can't really shop there in the summer because anything frozen is melted or dairy is soured by the time one gets back to JC.

Also, as to Grove Pointe's retail, Duane Reade and Starbuckies are possibilities that have been floated around on certain other boards frequented by real estate agents looking to sell units. That being said, I think Grove Pointe probably is a likely starbucks location, but nothing official yet.

I used to shop at Whole Foods in Edgewater, but I now shop at Garden of Eden, which is cheaper, and has a french creamy blue cheese that is the best in the world - The two of us go through a pound a week! They also have prepared foods that keep better than Whole Foods prepared does. If you go before 11:30 on Saturday or Sunday it is even possible to get parking right outside the store. Unfortunately its a small store so they don't have everything I need. I still go to Pathmart or ShopRite for dog food, cleaning supplies, seltzer, and paper products.
When I saw that a Trader Joes was coming to Edgewater I went to the one off of route 17 in Paramus to check it out. I wasn't impressed overall. True they are cheaper than Whole Foods and Garden of Edan, but everything is packaged. There is no butcher dept or fresh sea food dept. The cheeses were nicely displayed, but like the rest of the store it is self serve. There is no one to serve you anything or answer questions, or make suggestions. Still, the store was well laid out, the staff was friendly, and the place was packed.

I think its only a matter of time before both trader joes and Whole foods show up in Jersey City or in Hoboken. between hoboken and the 07302 and 07310, there are 75,000 people. Hoboken and Newport are 75k and 85k median income, respectively, and 07302 55k. The national average is 44k;

Even better would be a Fairway which has a fresher selection and lower prices than Whole Foods.
Let's be realistic: Whole Foods rarely locates in "low income districts" such as Our Fair City.
Fairway, on the other hand, makes a specialty of it (Harlem, Red Hook, etc.)
And you just can't beat their rich, ripe cheese counter...

For people looking for fresh vegetables, there's a very good vegetable market on Route 440. It takes maybe 10-15 minutes to drive there.

I wouldn't mind a Whole Foods, or just a few stores where I can get fresh vegetables and good quality meat, poultry and fish within walking distance of Historic Downtown.

But it's not like downtown is barren. You can go to various shops and find great variety of foods. Some gourmet, some ethnic specialty. There's the Polish market Europa on Jersey avenue, as well as Subias. Along Newark there are some asian groceries with specialty foods. There's Pecoraro's bakery for great freshly baked bread. Further north you have GO which has a good variety of specialty foods (even if, as some critics have contended, it is somewhat inconsistent). And for basic groceries, I have no problem with going to the Pathmark at Old Colony. And people closer to C-Town or Shoprite have the same options.

A store like Whole Foods would be nice, although a bit expensive. But if you just walk around a little bit, and are willing to take the occasional car trip, you can find a lot of great stores and eat pretty well. Plenty of people around here have figured out a way to survive.

Joshua

Whole Foods, Wegman's, Fairway, even Trader Joes, I'll take any one of them.

And, btw, regarding whole paycheck, the Shop Rite is not particularly cheap. Even the Pathmark is more expensive than the fancy versions of the same chain stores in the suburbs . . .

I enjoy the prepared meals at WF, but IMHO Wegman's has a better variety for those of us who like to eat good food that is not necesarily organic or free of any preservatives.
I cast my vote for Wegman's

If everyone types in their zip code at the trader joes and wholefoods website that might spark their intrest. It worked with freshdirect.

I don't see anything wrong with Ethan Crane criticizing Newport's design and layout (or lack thereof). It's his opinion and mine too, and I'm sure plenty of others. Should we just be thankful that the developer gods blessed us with those buildings? Just because it's no longer rats and filth doesn't mean it's great. It's okay to criticize and express our opinion on it. I wonder why people get so offended by that here.

And isn't Newport filled with "renter losers"?

I remember a thread here a while back titled "God Bless the Lefraks." Pathetic.

Thanks for the support, Rory. The real point of my post, though, was to point out that icricket is likely a shill for the LeFraks and related developers, and that icricket's posts should be held suspect. It just bothers me to see developers using such weasel tactics to influence opinion.

icricket's response has been to call me paranoid. I'm not going to beat this to death, but it's hardly paranoid to think developers would do a thing like that, and icricket has been cheerleading on this board for a long time. icricket's suggestion that s/he is too multicultural for me is almost as bizarre as her/his suggestion that the LeFraks single-handedly started the revitalization of Jersey City. Anyone who was around back then, and I was, could see that a waterfront building boom was inevitable. It would have happened even without Schundler wrapping the area up in tax abatements and giving it to the LeFraks. And we'd all be better off without those ugly green and white skyscrapers.

I have to 2nd 4Baileys comment on Wine Library. If you ever find yourself out that way, it is well worth your time to stop in. They are very friendly, helpful, have a huge selection and some very good prices. Prices in their gourmet cheese section are not bad either. I stop by there whenever I am in the neighborhood.

I don't think the A+P is closed. I was there a week and a half ago. However they ARE remodelling while the store is open which is a pain in the butt. The store is half stocked and you get weird new aisle combinations like the bread and laundry detergent aisle.

Hopefully it will be finished soon.

Along with the thread drift to wine stores?

Again, if you have a car and don?t mind a short ride, Wine Library (www.winelibrary.com) in Springfield, not far from the Short Hills mall, generally has an excellent selection and some of the best prices in the area. The owner is very ambitious about taking on Zachy?s for depth, but is looking to keep prices low to turn around inventory quick. They?ve recently expanded the store and added a gourmet section (D?Artagnan stuff, cheese, etc.). Well worth the car ride.

BTW ? I?m not affiliated with them or ITB ?just a customer since ?95.
