+1.

Curious if anyone has checked out the LITM Sunday night movie series? Looks like they are showing some cool films and I am wondering what the turnout has been.

Also, re: Nafco, just because a lot of "artists" live here doesn't mean they all like independent movies, not to mention the same kind of independent movies. (And us non-artists like non-mainstream movies too, by the way.)

Would I welcome a cool theater that showed really interesting films? You betcha. But then we would all start bitching about their film selection or their prices or their concession stand or their seats or WHATEVER and then no one would go and then it would close and then we would be sad.

yea, im not saying they dont play good movies, but im saying they dont play any good NEW movies. Reference Loews on Wikipedia and see that they dont play any movies in a current release.

Im not so sure one indie theater in this entire city would tank. i think there would be enough interest being that there are only two theaters in the city as it is and they mostly play garbage mainstream movies. Another theater that plays quality movies with decent access through public transit should be able to make it with all the artists that do still live here.

The Loews at Journal Square occasionally has theme-based weekends. It's been a joy to have sci-fi film weekends, MGM musical weekends, etc. but they are sporadic and limited.

Problem is, the property is owned by the city. Lacking a profit imperative the management has neither the vision nor the incentive to realize the potential being discussed here.

But there are other venues that might be made over at small cost as ad-hoc theaters, should anyone be interested in exploring that possibility.

On the corner of Bergen and Fairmount is a former bank, a handsome Greek-revival building that has been vacant for at least 5 years. Large open space interior. The parking lot across the street is basically a daytime leased lot that remains unoccupied in the evenings after dark - and there's another lot about 100 yards away, on Bergen, next to the supermarket.

There are commercial buildings along Newark Ave where only the street level is used but were built during a time when shoppers were in better shape that they are today, had more time and were willing to climb a whole (OMG!) whole flight of stairs. Those upper floors often have undivided spaces. (Skinner's Loft restaurant's second floor dining area is an excellent example of adapting one of those spaces into a really handsome room.

Grace Church already makes use of its auxiliary building with daycare during weekdays and various activities in its open space on evenings and weekends.

Victory Hall used to have an annual film thing. They ran a great clean print of The Third Man few years ago. .

Taking a different approach, there are many possible Tar Beach rooftop locations all over the city that could easily become our own Cinema Paradiso on summer nights.

This would def be a great addition to the city if the museum hosted a good indie theater much like the BAM in Brooklyn or Sunshine. I think Loews at JSQ is more geared to movies of the time the theater was actually built so lets hope this can work for some newer flicks.

Film lovers! Please be sure to visit our Website for a calendar of diverse films that show regularly at Jersey City Museum's theater. For the month of January, we are very excited to present the African Diaspora Film Festival, which comes to the museum January 26th and 27th. The Festival features the work of emerging and established filmmakers of color and this year will be showcasing the film, NY's Dirty Laundry,, which was picked up by the Cannes Film Festival and focuses in on a predominantly black neighborhood in Brooklyn in the post 9/11 era. Also featured in the Festival are acclaimed documentaries The Souls of Black Girls and Josephine Baker: Black Diva in a White Man's World, which will screen during a special opening reception on January 26th, 2:40 pm. Please call 201.413.0303 x 141 or email info@jerseycitymuseum.org for more information

Yeah the #OOPS#heads at Newport raised their prices their early shows are $8 bucks their adult shows after noon I guess are $10 a pop.

I went to watch I am Legend (shitty movie by the way don't go see it) My movie was SUPPOSED to start at 4:40pm nope it started at 5:00pm thanks to the idiots at Newport. Hell no previews even came on at 4:40pm.

Not only that but there was no AC running and it was hot as hell in the theater and there were 4 huge ugly blot stains on the screen one in the dead center that looks like you spilled something on it and 3 really dark ones to the right side of the screen this was in theater 6.

I was just kidding. I find that sometimes the high school kids at Newport can get annoying. Until going there I'd never seen anyone chuck his soda at the movie screen, and the kids who take calls during the movie are just plain rude.

If you want to go out to the theaters among adults and well somewhat controlled kids then your best bets are Edgewater Multiplex or Batter Park Stadium 16.

Anywhere else in this area and you will disappointed.

( shameless plug because I grew up in that neighborhood)

There's the Mayfair Triplex on 64th and Park ave in West New York. Gets major movies on release dates. Two small theatres and one huge one. Pretty dirty and grimey, but 5bucks. About a half hour busride from downtown JC. The 86p takes you right there, or the jitneys but they leave you about 5blocks away on Bergenline Ave. Something different to do on a boring day I guess. Dope views of midtown NYC a block away on Blvd East too.

The cheapest local theaters are in Union City and North Bergen. Both were mentioned earlier.

Summit is on Summit Avenue near 12th in Union City. It charges matinee prices all day. Be wrned. It has three smallish screens and is often filthy. There is no parking and kids often run up and dow nthe aisles at all times.

The Regency in North Bergen located behind the Columbus Park Mall on 32nd Street west of the Blvd., is much better. There are twelve large screens, luxurious, comfortable seating, first run movies and tickets ar around $6.

Inexplicably, it's never crowded.

The movie theater in battery park city is just one stop away on the path from exchange place and is never crowded. It's not cheap (I think I paid $9.50 the last time I went there) but it's worth the trip.

Are you kidding me? Newport raised their prices again? Considering that you have to go there with a bullet proof vest, a gun, a dog to keep the hooligans away from you and your kids, I think the least they could do is keep the prices at a decent and stable way. I hate that movie theater. All those hood-rats, teenagers give me a headache!!

My in-laws go to the movie theatre in Hudson Mall. According to them, it's very inexpensive...and surprisingly well maintained.

Seeing as the cinema in Newport raised their prices and their theater isn't all too great where would be another good spot to watch a movie for a decent buck.

When we go to Edgewater, we combine it with a trip to Mitsuwa. You can't beat lunch at the food court there, either.
