It is wild to think what Newark Avenue was like even just 40 years ago. From just the Court House down past Tonnele Avenue nothing but bakeries, butcher?s, hardware stores, diners, many many taverns, drug stores, soda fountains, candy stores, electronic stores, electronic parts stores, fish markets, barbers, beauty parlors, cloths stores, music shops, magic shop, liquor stores, travel agencies, insurance agencies, dentists, department store, typewriter shop, fabric shop?.boy have times changed.

Of course the best of all While Castle which has been there forever..

Jersey City butcher shop has been staple of neighborhood for 140 years

JERSEY CITY -- At Moloney's Meat Market, when you walk in, you're family.

For more than 140 years, this has been the philosophy of the family-owned butcher shop. In an age of chain stores and supermarkets, fourth-generation owner Tom Moloney believes this customer-focused approach is what makes his business distinct.

"To me, the customers make this business fun. We give them the best cut they can get. The bottom line is that if I'm not taking a cut home, then the customer's not taking it home," Moloney said.

Located on Newark Avenue in the Five Corners neighborhood of Jersey City, Moloney's Meat Market has become a true Jersey City institution, and draws regular customers from Bayonne, Hoboken, Union City, and beyond.  It serves up choice cuts of premium meats prepared for the customer, including beef, pork, chicken, veal, lamb, as well as seafood, in addition to sandwiches, soups, and specialty foods.

In 1943 our family moved into the neighborhood. Moloney's was then - and still is - a classic butcher shop with high quality stuff and excellent service, at reasonable prices.

In 1945, at age 12, I got newspaper route that covered pretty much the entire area from the back of Journal Square to Baldwin Ave and from Pavonia to Observer Highway. Moloney's was a favorite stop. The butchers always gave me a tip and offered a slice of baloney or liverwurst.

What, you ask, has service got to do with a butcher shop? The most obvious thing is you get the exact cut you ask and the weight you want, not what is already super-market-wrapped with the "bad" cut folded under the good one.

The butchers are a dependable source for directions in preparing an unfamiliar meat or cut.

Moloney's meats are great but so is the store-made ravioli... Tasty! We always get regular cheese and spinach cheese, and love both.

If you're looking for it remember that it's spelled MOLONEYS. Stopped in there today for bangers and picked up huge turkey thighs. They're awesome...........three pounds of all dark meat........yummm. They said they only sell them at this time of year, but I'm freezing them.

Where's Maloney's? Google points me to this conversation but there's no listing for them. Could it be "Maloney Commodities" on Broadway?

My impression is that they pretty much sell out every day.

Maloney's is the best. Going in there is like going back in time............sawdust on the floor and all. And they've got lots of Irish sausages and such. Also, super nice people. It's on Newark Avenue up by the courthouse.

I'll have to check out Maloney's. Peccararo's (SP?) is a daily stop on my route. Absolutely love it. Their wheat bread is divine. Why everyone in town doesn't go there for bread, I'll never know- more for me I guess.
bon appetite!

After 7 years, I moved out of JC to the burbs with my little one last year. This weekend I made a pilgrimage back to some of my favorite haunts, to include Pecaro's (sp?) for Italian bread and Maloney's butcher shop. I felt compelled to advertise for both. These types of family run, old school establishments are a dying breed and deserve all the support they deserve. Maloney's quality and price can't be beat...to include a full rack of very meaty pork ribs I slow roasted last night. Not sure what the price was per pound, however they cost me about 7 bucks.
