Just a reminder that there will be a public meeting with City officials, including Councilwoman Mary Spinello, for the expansion of the Boyd-McGuiness park, at the corner of Duncan and Kennedy, essentially doubling its size with the aquisition of the empty lot just to its west on Duncan Avenue.
Community Meeting Expansion of Boyd-McGuiness Park Friday - November 9th - 6pm to 8pm St. Dominic's Academy 2572 Kennedy Blvd This is the only opportunity that Ward B will be given for a neighborhood park aquisition. The only other potential parkland that Ward B has listed in the Jersey City Open Space and Recreation Master Plan is alongside and behind the Lowe's Home Improvement Store on Rt 440. That area has limited access by most of Ward B residents. Boyd-McGuiness park is located in the most densely occupied section of Ward B containing over 1,000 residential units within a one block radius. There are five senior and handicapped residential buildings representing about 400+ families within a 500 foot distance. Many of these residents are limited in their mobility and a more pleasurable seating plaza would enhance their quality of life. Many new comers to Jersey City have choosen to reside within West Bergen/Lincoln Park area. Many of these are young professionals that have growing families. The expansion of the Boyd-McGuiness park would allow for a tot-park and seating/play area for young families to gather and socialize. Social gathering places help build strong neighborhoods and reinforce community stability. In addition, it would offering multi-generation interactions. And as a corner park it has excellent visibility from the street that lends itself to better surveillance by the police. Less incidents of crime and mischief would possibly occur in such an open park setting.
