It's funny, I wanted to come see if anyone else here had put a post regarding trash cans being stolen, and low and be hold there is a listing. This is the third time since my sister and I have moved into our home on New York avenue. Our trash cans have been stolen twice and now our good recycle bins were stolen last night. I have put our address on all bins, but these were still stolen.
Anyone have any suggestions that I can do that will help keep my next cans from being stolen?

I saw that a new Garbage Can Depot is opening on Tonnelle Ave. They have "new" and "used" cans. Trade-ins too.

A new-ish plastic garbage can would also make a great portable storage unit for an enterprising hobo.

I hope I didn't just give any homeless JClisters any ideas.

If the trash cans were the large plastic ones on wheels, then you might want to check out your local artists (sculptors) or art studio (refinery). Check around their yard, look over their fence and inside their window.

My garbage cans were stolen a couple of years ago. They took them with the garbage.

Go figure.

A large group of trash cans were caught trying to enter Mexico illegally last night. Many were branded with addresses; some from as far away as Jersey City, NJ. When questioned by authorities, they claimed that they were fed up with conditions north of the border. They were forced to work long hours in smelly conditions with no shelter from the weather.

"It just became intolerable", said one, "We're only aluminum!"

I thought I was the only one! Two weks ago my building's new cans were stolen from BEHIND a locked gate! They took the garbage out and left it. They did not steal the recycling can because the glass inside would make too much noise. I was pissed!

no, these were the big ones with wheels and a attached lid. They are expensive.

Thanks for the stories

While this certainly is not going to make the front page of the JJ, I just thought i'd let you all know.

Seriously, trash cans, wtf is wrong with people?

They weren't real shiny, aluminum ones, were they? I vaguely remember one of the pricks that used to hang out on 6th walking down Coles with a gleaming garbage can hoisted over his head in the middle of the night. Seriously, I think it may have been last week.

They never steal my garbage cans but they steal my garbage. They always come in the middle of the night when I'm asleep. They leave the cans and the lids and they just steal the garbage. I don't get it. This happens at least twice a week. I'm thinking about setting up a video camera.

My recycling bin was stolen last week. And our trashcans have been stolen in the past. At least it was stolen after the garbagemen left. But they didn't take the cover. It is also difficult to decorate the front of our home since those items have gone missing too. People have even cut flowers from our front yard.

Happened to us, too - twice in the last 2-3 years! The first time around, the thief was considerate enough to steal the garbage along with the can. The second time, they stole it during the night, right after the garbage truck had rolled through, while the empty can was still on the curb.
I even walked a around few blocks (sad but true) to see if I could spot our can in the offender's alley, because our address was spray painted in big obnoxious, day-glo colors. No luck.

Wow

Who would take a trash can when the address is written on them?

I remember driving down the shore once, and seeing someone had a big piece of plywood on their front lawn, with a spray painted sign that said "To the asshole who stole my trashcans: might as well take the lids too." And 2 lids sitting on the ground under the sign.
