Taking advantage of Jersey City?s exciting Fall art season, J CITY Theater?s selection of As Bees in Honey Drown has pitch-perfect timing. This manic comedy, set in the roller coaster New York art world, is a biting commentary on the American culture?s obsession with fame and celebrity. The seduction of fame without achievement is mined for comic gold in this runaway Off-Broadway hit from Douglas Carter Beane, the playwright of last season?s Tony Award-winning The Little Dog Laughed. J CITY Theater creates a glittering world of image over substance while spinning this fairy tale of success.

Alexa Vere de Vere, played by Sandy Cockrell, is the show?s ferocious and flawless siren who moves the story along at a fevered pitch. Says one character of Alexa, ?She is a mixture of every woman I?ve ever loved in a movie.? Her intoxicating allure is laced with danger, keeping the audience guessing right up to the closing moments. Is she goddess or grifter?

J CITY Theater Executive Producer Clay Cockrell states that the play was selected because of its focus on the art world. ?Each Fall, Jersey City explodes with the visual arts as ProArts presents its annual Jersey City Artists Studio Tour,? says Mr. Cockrell. ?We wanted to add a theatrical voice to this year?s tour and I believe this show is a great addition to the line up of events.?

Indeed, J CITY Theater is working closely with ProArts, whose Artists Studio Tour occurs during the second week of the show?s three-week run. Several paintings by ProArts? members will be used as part of the scenic design of the play and will be for sale to the public when the show closes on October 14. Additionally, performance space and gallery space will become one as J CITY Theater shares the Brennan Courthouse Rotunda with one of the Artists Studio Tour?s major shows: the 2007 Hudson County State-Wide Arts Annual, entitled ?The Nature of Duality,? curated by France Garrido and Kathryn Klanderman. ?This play about the art world is actually going to be surrounded by the works of some of New Jersey?s most exciting artists,? says Mr. Cockrell. ?We think the Brennan Courthouse is going to be a not-to-be-missed stop for the Fall.?

?The idea for doing a play at the Brennan Courthouse came out of conversation with County Executive Tom DeGise?, says J CITY Theater Artistic Director Sandy Cockrell. ?We are big fans of the Brennan Coffee House, which Tom created as a showcase for folk music and has become extremely successful. Tom had heard of the things we have been doing as a theater company and approached us asking how he could help. Together with Bill LaRosa and the Hudson County Office of Cultural Affairs, we have developed a way to turn this beautiful space into a working theater. Since taking office, Tom DeGise has turned the Brennan Courthouse into one the county?s premier centers for art, music and now?theater. We are immensely grateful to him.?
