Got to say the husband and wife are two of the nicer people I have met in town, going back to taco truck days. so I think you should leave the "we" out of it, cuz there is nothing to put up with. something tells me your experience is very unique to you, and it effects your impression of everyone around you

Racist comment? I don't know about that, seems strange. There is no table service, they just make the food and you eat it.

their service is far from "aweful"... order at the counter and they bring it to you or call you when it is done. nothing to it. it is a very casual place so do not go expecting 5 star service.

regarding racist comments... i find it VERY hard to believe that this came from the folks that own/run it, they are the nicest small business owners in town. So does this aply to the kitchen staff? doesn't make sense either way...

in other words, sounds like someone on this other bord is full of it.

Ok, so call me slow. I've been reading about Taqueria for the past year or more. Starting with the Taco Truck and then following their story on JC List, and I've been meaning to try them out for the longest time. So finally Sandy and I took the plunge and tried them Friday.

Oh. My. God. How do they do that? It was amazing. I've never had anything like it. Delicious! Simple! Wow!

I hate that their prices are so damn cheap. If they were more expensive I could talk myself out of going there every day, but with these prices, damn. I'm going to be there way too much.

I now understand what you all have been talking about...the taco addiction. You weren't kidding.

They do have outdoor seating when weather permits. They are also dog-friendly. My beagle has sat through many a meal under our table outside.

You might want to double check with them first that the tables are outside today.

i don't understand why they're too lazy to carry guacamole. The Aztecs crated guacamole and where they used to live is now part of Mexico.

yes, truly a classic in the making. real lime wedges in the tacos. authentic chipolte sauce on request. And tecate (in cans)!

enjoy it before the original owners sell out to the franchise lobby...

This place rocks! The food is authentic - not like the stuff you get in those chains such as Chili's.

Cinco Tacos, Hold de Mayo

By:Christopher M. Halleron -Hudson Reporter - 05/10/2007

You've got to love the sheer, bold-faced audacity of Americans celebrating Cinco de Mayo. More often than not, that celebration is characterized by raving packs of lilywhite, frat-boy carne-heads in gaudy, oversized sombreros doing the Macarena while whacking back Coronas and shots of Patron until they nod off for a little siesta at a local Irish bar. Of course, as the fog lifts on Seis de Mayo, these same knuckle-draggers sit around bemoaning our broken borders and griping about their maid service over brunch at a restaurant staffed by underpaid immigrant workers. Como se dice 'cojones'?

Personally, I prefer a more subdued acknowledgement of the Battle of Puebla (most people continually screw this up - for the record, Mexican Independence Day is actually Sept. 16). Years ago I spent an extended period working/drinking in Cancun, Mexico. Surrounded by rotten tourist traps and fast-food franchises, ironically the only food I could keep down was the type Montezuma warned us about - roadside tacos. Since returning, I've been on a quest to find that same bona fide fare, and with Taqueria Downtown (236 Grove St., Jersey City), I've struck oro.

Simple soft, corn tortillas with meat, onions, cilantro, genuine salsa and a lime wedge -that's all you need. And while most Mexican restaurants find a way to screw that up, Taqueria Downtown miraculously and consistently nails it. I can certainly vouch for the consistency, considering I've been back at least half a dozen times since my maiden visit about a month ago. These tacos are perhaps the most addictive Mexican export since...well...let's just say the food is pretty damn good.

But my visit on May 5 stood out in particular. Most places would go all out on Cinco de Mayo, but this place didn't really see the need. Elsewhere the Irish bars and tchotchke chains had their shot girls and mariachi bands, as I sat in Taqueria Downtown and quietly enjoyed my taco carnitas while "Stairway to Heaven" cranked on Q 104.3. There's a uniquely comfortable, sort of Mexi-hipster feel to the place that says, "Come for our food because that's our only gimmick - and that's all we need."

In addition to their glorious tacos, Taqueria Downtown offers a full menu of genuine Mexican cuisine, with unbelievable prices ranging from $2.50 to $10.95.

Further cementing the restaurant's brazenly confident vibe is its list of Los Diez Mandamientos (The Ten Commandments). While Mandamientos 1 through 9 are a concise lesson in authentic Mexican food snobbery, commandment number 10 is the one that speaks the most: "10. No tacky red, white and green uniforms with a red sash around the waist." In other words, you won't have to worry about Montezuma's revenge, but you might have to deal with his wry smile and middle finger.

Fair enough, considering...

my fave is the carnitas torta. perfect 1:1:1 ratio of pork, pork fat, and beans, with some vegetables for show, mayonnaise, between two delicious pieces of bread (what kind of bread is that?!?).

bonus points: one of the guys there knows my name... and he remembered it even though i hadn't seen him for at least three months or so. worst part is, i still wouldn't be able to tell you guys what his name is.

thanks for remembering me, tall white dude.

You guys are forgetting possibly the BEST item on the menu... the machaca burrito. I've traveled through Northern and Central Mexico, and Taqueria's machaca is authentic and f-ing delicious. There's no other way to put it. It is also my new hangover cure... eggy beefy greasy goodness!

Yes, La Gloria de Mexico in the Heights at Palisades and Congress. It's been mentioned in other JC List threads, so try searching for it here.

I ate there for the first time on Saturday night on the suggestion from a friend. It was delicious! Had a pork taco, a fish taco, a steak taco, and shared some chicken flautas. My g/f had a beef taco and a quesedilla.

We loved it. Everything was so good. I'll definitely be back!

Are there any other good Mexican places in JC?

Very good Huevos Rancheros.

Very good tacos (fish or cactus for the non-carnivores among us).

I hope that the nearby Liberty Harbor development brings them more business and keeps them successful.

Every time we stopped by Andrea was gracious and talked to us about how the business is doing, the idea behind it, and plans for the future.

We're big fans.

That's my problem too. I'll usually order 4 tacos and a tamale (sp) and i'll be stuffed after taco number 3. The thing is, i never learn and i always order too much.

Did you know that they put negative JClist reviews of their restaurant on the wall? (it's funny).

I have now been there about 10 times and loved it every time. I usually get the tacos but last Sat. night I tried the chuletas with green sauce and it was outstanding. I wish they delivered.

So Good! I lived in LA for a couple years, and this is still the best Mexican food. Fish Tacos!!! A few things done extremly well, that what I like. So many JC places look all nice but the food is crap.

I agree with JSalt. While I appreciate that Taqueria's authenticitiy, it's not the authenticity that brings me back there week after week. It's the deliciosity. And the lard, probably. And the huevos rancheros. And the salsa verde. Oh, and the tortillas. Those are some good tortillas.

It's funny, when Fang and I were in Austin last week, we had plenty of authentic Mexican and Tex-Mex food. Some of it was good, some of it was really really good, but even though some of it was as good as Taqueria, nothing was better than Taqueria.

I feel comfortable saying this, because this is my 126th post, so I don't have to worry about being accused of crypto-blogging.

Oh, and the hot chocolate! I almost forgot the hot chocolate.
