I wonder (hope) these incidents were bad coincidences. We rely on emergency responders.

I've had to call 911 on numerous occasions in the Heights over 20 years for both crime and medical incidents. Fortunately I've always had the police or the paramedics show up within 10 minutes (max) of calling. When the system works it's truly life saving.

A couple of months ago I called 911 to report a car accident. It was a hit and run, nobody was hurt thankfully, but Monmouth was completely blocked. It rang a good 10 times before a rather annoyed dispatcher picked up. It was 4pm-ish during the week and I was wondering if it was maybe a shift change. Regardless, not reassuring.

This unfortunately is not unusual, a friend told me about a fire he had, not realizing there was a pizza box in his oven by one of his kids, unknown to hm. Eventually, he was able to put out the fire but he first called 911 and no one picked up.

It was 3:30 in the afternoon on February 5th when Bill* heard screaming outside his Newark Avenue apartment. He looked out the window and saw an elderly?man on the ground "with blood running down his face."
