These 15 N.J. real estate markets are bargains right now

Not a lot about New Jersey's housing market screams bargain.

In fact, the definition of a "bargain" in New Jersey might be pretty different from many other states.

The hottest markets in the Garden State right now -- such as Rumson, Chatham Township or Weehawken -- land far outside the budgets of most residents.

The median home value in the state is about $312,000, according to data from Zillow, the real estate website. But to get a home in an up-and-coming area, it's typically going to cost a lot more.

5. Jersey City, Hudson County

Home value: $432,800

Jersey City has seen explosive growth; the city's home values have increased 24 percent in the past year alone. It's often seen as a bargain compared with the price of living in New York City, and makes for a good investment opportunity.

1. Jersey City, Hudson County

Jersey City reigns atop the list after several quarters at number two. The city's median home value grew by nearly a quarter in the past year.
